American Airlines and technology partner AirCell plan to test in-flight Internet access on a New York-Los Angeles flight today.
Passengers with laptops or hand-held devices will be able to access the Internet, download video, and send and receive e-mails and instant messages.
After the initial flight, a wider pilot program is expected to begin in the next few weeks on flights between New York and Los Angeles, San Francisco and Miami.
American plans to charge $9.95 for flights less than three hours and $12.95 for flights longer than that, according to published reports.
