Northwest Changes Baggage Allowance and Fees
Northwest Airlines has announced changes to its luggage policies for coach class customers traveling within North America.
For travel on or after May 5, 2008, Northwest Airlines is matching several other U.S. carriers and implementing a $25 charge for their customer’s second checked bag. The fee is applied each way. Customers may continue to check one piece of luggage free of charge. These changes affect only their customers booked in coach class.
Additionally, there is an increase from $80 to $100 for three or more checked bags, and an increase from $25 to $50 for overweight bags greater than 50 pounds.
Passengers with a Silver (or higher)WorldPerks status, SkyTeam elite customers and passengers booked in full fare coach classes may still check 2 bags free of charge. The allowance is 3 bags for their customers booked in first class.
Of the major U.S. carriers, Continental is the "last man standing", as they have not yet announced a similar charge.
