Southwest/WestJet Team Up to Provide Canada Service
Southwest Airlines has entered into a partnership deal with Canada's WestJet, and are planning their first international service. Their proposed program will be based on a "code share" agreement, and is subject to the review and approval of both U.S. and Canadian regulators.
Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said in a statement, "We are confident that we've found a perfect fit with WestJet, and we are excited to work toward opening our expansive U.S. network to include Canadian destinations".
WestJet CEO Sean Durfy called the Southwest deal "a defining moment for WestJet." He said an agreement would significantly improve the reach of both airlines as well as generating new revenues for each carrier.
Southwest said it plans to announce schedules and other features of the WestJet partnership by late next year.
