United Airlines Announces New Baggage Fees
United Airlines has announced today that, like American Airlines, they will begin charging $15 to check a single bag on domestic flights.
The changes will affect tickets purchased on or after June 13, for travel on or after August 18. The $15 fee does not apply to some customers who are members of United's loyalty programs. First and Business class passengers are exempt, as well as military personnel traveling on orders.
Fees will also be raised for checking 3 or more bags, overweight bags or items that require special handling. Passengers will now pay 25% more, depending on the item.
Citing the now familiar "soaring costs of fuel", airlines are increasingly turning to fees to produce new sources of revenue. United expects to generate some $275 million in fees for checking the first and second bags.
