American Airlines increases baggage fees

American Airlines has announced new fees for checked baggage, effective for all tickets purchased on or after April 8, 2014 (For US Airways, these changes will take effect on tickets purchased on or after April 23.). The baggage fees for first and second bags on United States domestic flights have not increased.

There is good news, though! Instead of charging $70 for a second checked bag, American Airlines will now grant travelers on flights to South America two free bags.

Also effective April 8, 2014, AAdvantage Gold and Dividend Miles Platinum and Gold frequent flier club members will receive one fewer free checked bag than they do today. Anyone traveling on an AAnytime award or a full-fare economy ticket (on legacy American) will no longer receive free checked bags. However, Citi cardholders will continue to receive one free bag, and as of April 30, customers with the US Airways MasterCard will also receive a free checked bag. Military members traveling on orders will continue to receive five free checked bags and will receive three free checked bags during personal travel.
