Giving birth to a baby is hard work any way you cut it—especially if you do it 35,000 feet in the air in an Emirates’ airplane bathroom toilet.
A woman on an Emirates flight in early August did just that (See, we weren’t joking). She was traveling from Dubai to Manila when early labor struck. Two Filipina nurses were thankfully on board and they assisted the delivery. The plane was then redirected to Ho Chi Min City where mother and baby were taken to a hospital upon landing.
The mother decided to name the baby boy EK, after the Emirates’ flight code.
Though unusual, little EK is certainly not the first baby to arrive mid-flight. This past April a baby boy was born on a flight from Atlanta to Africa. In 2011 another baby was born on a flight from Manila to San Francisco, and another on a flight from Milan to Paris.
