When to ignore our advice and book your flight as early as possible

We spent a lot of time over the last year doing a huge study on flight booking patterns and we concluded that the best time to book a flight is 54 days in advance, on average. We also found that booking too early or too late could cause you to pay more than you have to and that the “prime booking window” where the best fares are available usually ranges from 29 to 104 days before departure.

All of this is generally great advice.

Except when it isn’t.

Importantly, there are some exception circumstances where you might want to forget about the “don’t book too early” warning and book your flight much earlier than 54 days in advance. The main reason is that, in order for prices to drop, there needs to be a decent number of seats left on a flight; otherwise, airlines have no need to discount them. If you’re traveling to an especially popular destination at an especially popular time, flights might fill up well before what is normally the prime booking window. That gives airlines the luxury of never having to put those flights on sale.

Flights to Florida for Spring Break are a great example. If you want to travel on weekends, especially, reasonably priced seats on those flights can be extremely hard to come by. Also, flights to Europe for the summer. In that case, we actually found that the best time to buy was 319 days in advance! And the best day to buy domestic flights for both the Thanksgiving and Christmas periods was June 4th, 5 months before Thanksgiving and 6 months before Christmas.

The simple fact is that where and when you’re going makes a huge difference. Popular vacation destinations are more likely to sell out and, for that reason, it’s best to book earlier. For example, for Ft. Lauderdale, Phoenix, Orange County, San Diego, West Palm Beach, Pensacola, and Orlando the average best time to buy was actually 75 days in advance. For Vegas, it was 81. Hawaii (all airports), 87. These are all 3-5 weeks earlier than the general average of 54.

If your destination is a small airport with limited service on a small number of airlines, you are also at higher risk if you wait too long. There is often not enough competition to these cities to encourage the fare sales that play a big role in driving fares down in other markets.

International Flights

For both reasons above — they are popular and there is less air service to them — it’s usually better to book international flights further in advance than you would book a domestic ticket. Our study revealed that the best time to buy flights to the South Pacific was 70 days out, on average. To Africa it was 166 days out. For Mexico it was 89 days, Europe 151, Asia 129, and the Caribbean 101.

Price vs. Convenience

The other important point to consider when deciding when to buy your ticket is that there is usually a trade-off between price and convenience. Our study was very much focused on simply the lowest price. We measured, for every purchase day for every trip, the lowest possible fare in the market, without regard to airline, time, number of stops, or other convenience factors. Sometimes there was a choice of flights at different times that offered the same “lowest fare.” Other times, there were only a few options, or only one. We have customers tell us all the time, “I don’t care how I get there, strap me to the wing if you have to, I just want cheap!” Our study was particularly well-suited for those customers. On the other hand, for those who care deeply about what airline you fly, what time you fly, or whether you are going nonstop (and there are millions of you out there), it is best to book earlier than someone who is more flexible, because as time goes by you have a shrinking pool of options to choose from, even if the lowest possible fare stays around the same.

General Ticket Buying Strategies

General Ticket Buying Strategies

It’s Better to Buy Too Early Than Too Late

One last thing to consider when you’re trying to decide when to pull the trigger. While you are frequently not well served by booking too early or too late, of the two “too late” is much worse. For domestic flights in 2013, those who booked before the prime booking window of 29-104 days in advance paid an average of $33 more per ticket than those who booked within that window. But those who booked too late paid an average of $73 more per ticket.

The Airlines’ Last Laugh

Finally, we spent a lot of time researching what people should do, and when we finished we thought it would be fun to see what our customers actually did do. Looking at bookings on CheapAir.com in 2013, we found that only 34% bought within the prime booking window. The number who bought earlier than that was tiny, only 5%. That means a whole bunch of customers, 61% to be exact, booked their trips within 28 days of travel, too late to get the best fare. 36% even broke our cardinal rule and waited until inside of two weeks.

No wonder the airlines are making more money than ever!

  1. Very Nice tips. Thanks alot . :-)

  2. My husband and I are planning a trip for September 2014 to Italy. We are wanting to fly from Kansas City to Rome and then Lamezia Terme back to Kansas City. The cheaper flights right now are between $1300 and $1400, but it is still quite a ways out. Do you think we should wait-I was wondering because I have seen a notice on a few of the cheaper flights with the times we prefer that there are “only x number of seats left at this price”. Thanks!

    • Hi Allison,

Based on what you’re seeing, I would suggest to purchase your flights sooner than later. If you’re seeing only a limited number of seats available for the flights you’re interested in, then you’ll want to snag them as quickly as you can, since once they’re purchased fares are likely to rise. Airlines will limit the number of seats in each fare class and once that fare class sells out, then the next highest fare class is sold, until only the most expensive seats are left. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

      • I am getting an air ticket in Swiss Air from NJ to Mumbai, India (November departure and February return) for $900. Do you think it is too early to buy the ticket now? Do you think the price may drop further? Thank you in advance.

        • Hi Alpha,

It would be best to book at minimum 100 days or more prior to your departure in November. I’d recommend to keep monitoring the fares from now onward. You can use this link: http://bit.ly/RsWttH to view flight schedules and book. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

          • Should I start looking for deals in July for November departure from EWR NJ to Mumbai, India? My return ticket from Mumbai, India to EWR NJ is in December? Is air ticket in month of December costlier?

          • Hi Alpha,

I’d recommend checking the fares now onward. It’s best to get a sense of the pricing to see if the fares are increasing or decreasing. If you’re noticing the fares decreasing then I’d suggest to buy when you find the flights you like at the price you like. Otherwise, if the fares are increasing then that can be a sign to buy before the increase any more. Without knowing your exact dates of travel, it is difficult to check exact pricing. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

    • Did you end up booking yet? My husband and I are also going to Italy Sept 2014…and we’ve been waiting, and watching them drop. Ours dropped from $1400 to $1235

  3. I’m looking for air fares to Sydney , Australia for the month of September, but I do not know what will be a good price for the ticktes and how many months in advance I should buy it.

    • Hi Dina,

For flights to Sydney, Australia in September, you’ll want to book at minimum 70 days or more in advance. Unfortunately without knowing where you are departing from, we are unable to check fares for you. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  4. My wife and I have been traveling to Maui in Jan. or Feb. the last few years. This past year we booked 6 months in advance, but then the airlines changed our flights 10 times before the trip came. I guess if we waited until the 29-104 day window, that might not have happened as much. Also, does this magic window apply to domestic flights to Hawaii?

    • Hi Trevor,

Hawaii in the winter (Jan – Feb) is considered the low season. Flights are always cheaper during that time than at other times throughout the year. I’d suggest to book later than normal, but not too late. I’d recommend booking about 50 days or more. That should help cut down on some of the schedule changes you mentioned, but because of the winter weather schedule changes are a normal occurrence. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  5. This is very helpful info that you have compiled. However, it seems to be missing something, and that is info on the best time to buy air tickets TO the US from international destinations, rather than from the US. Do the recommendations to the different continents still apply?

    Thanks

    • Hi Dorje,

Great points and question. This information is still valid for travel from international destinations to the U.S., but you are correct that it is not something we included in this post. With international travel to the US, it is important to still take into account a lot of this information as it is still relevant. For example, our General Ticket Buying Strategies are great tips to take into account when booking. If you need any help with finding flight, please let us know.

  6. Hello, how can I obtain a copy of the full report?

    • Hi Yari,

Our airfare study is an internal report conducted by our CEO, Jeff Klee. He analyzes our reporting data and compiles the information you’ve read on the post. Unfortunately we cannot release the full report from our data. However, if you have any questions we’d be happy to answer them for you.

  7. Maybe I missed the link, is there a list for other cities as well? we are headed to Hawaii this summer. would love to know if there is a good window for that.

    • Hi Bryan,

No list for other cities at this time. For flights to Hawaii this summer, you’ll want to book now or as soon as possible since Hawaii during the summer season is considered peak season and flight prices are going to be more expensive than during other times throughout the year. If possible, flying mid-week should save you some money if you can be flexible with your travel dates. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  8. I am looking to book a flight to Orlando, FL for August 6th-9th from Newark, NJ. I have a specific flight I need to take out of Newark (JetBlue at 12:40pm) as the people I am going with already booked their flight. Over the past week the price has gone up about $20-$25. Should I wait longer to book? I’m not sure how to see if there any many seats left. Thanks.

    • Hi Daniela,

You should book your flights now. Whenever you’re trying to get a specific flight at a certain time, you should book earlier than normal since your limited with your flight options. Only when you’re flexible with your flight times should you wait it out to see and even then there’s a lot of factors that go into it all as mentioned in the General Ticket Buying Strategies above. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1cxDd2K. Please let us know if you need any help with finding your flights.

  9. heading to nigeria in late june staying for 10 days. what do you recommend?

    • Hi Kia,

For your flights to Nigeria in June, you should probably book about 165+ days in advance. That’s roughly five and a half months prior to June, meaning you should be booking your flights now or as soon as possible. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  10. Hi – thanks for your tips in all your blogs! My family of four will be flying from Toronto to Orlando, Aug 16-24th. I think its still a bit early to book our flights for the best fare, but I’ve been noticing that the fares have been steadily increasing. With it being a peak season/prime destination, would you advise on booking flights now? I did check the seat status of the flights, and there seems to be a lot of seats still available. We typically fly out from Buffalo because its much cheaper, but we are not able to this time around, so we are trying to save costs as much as possible. Many thanks for your insight!

    • Hi Cheryl,

Based on what you’re seeing and it being a peak season for a prime destination, booking earlier in advance would be wise. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1c2bzzP Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  11. I have a similar question as Trevor….I’m taking my two kiddos to Hawaii this year for the first time (yay us) but I have NO IDEA when to think about booking, and don’t see any helpful hints here for Hawaii?

We live in Washington State, so could leave from SeaTac or Bellingham, depending on what’s cheapest. I’m travelling with a 9 year old and a 14 year old, and a girlfriend with her three, 21, 16 and 14 may also travel with us (it’s their first trip too). We have been told it’s better to go in August, as that’s not peak tourist time and fares may be lower, but I’m not seeing anything to back this up……

    Helpful hints welcomed! :)

    Thanks!
    MB

    • Hi Michelle,

Hawaii in August is a great time to go because its warmer than usual, but it’s also considered a part of the peak season which is why flights will be higher than normal during that time. If you can travel to Hawaii during the winter season (November to March) you can save a lot more money on flights and hotels since this is considered the low season for Hawaii. If booking for the summer, you should book early in the year. If booking for winter, you can hold out and wait for deals about 3 months in advance or more. Hawaii tends to start pushing those sales at the end of the year. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  12. We are traveling to Jamaica the first week of November. Today I can book round trip airfare for two $501pp. Should I book now or still wait a few more months. Is this a fair price? we are leaving from RDU.

    • Hi Vickie,

That’s actually a pretty good price for your route. I’d suggest to continue to monitor the fares since you still have plenty of time, but I don’t suspect they’ll drop dramatically lower.

  13. Is “Canada” considered in the same category as US as far as advanced ticket windows for trips between the US and Canada (54 days)?

    • Hi Herb,

Yes, we consider Canada and the US together when determining the average.

  14. Two questions. One, does this take into account the frequent allegation that ticket prices vary depending on whether one has searched a route before and has the cookies to show it? e.g. was this data for this survey gathered from the same IP address, or did you collect it through some method that avoided individualized price?

Second, is it possible to obtain pricing information for specific routes? I’m a college student, so I fly a lot, and a journalist, so I’m interested in learning more.

    • Hi Jack,

Unfortunately our data is not route specific. To answer those cookie rumors, we get this question a lot. We should probably devote a whole blog post to this topic!

I am not sure where or how this rumor got started, but I can say pretty confidently it’s not true — certainly not on our site and I highly, highly doubt any other sites are doing it either.

Ultimately, the prices come from the airlines. Before we sell a ticket, we are making a direct query into the airline system to confirm pricing. And when those queries hit the airline, they have no idea who the customer is or what they have searched for in the past. So even if they wanted to manipulate fares in this way, they simply don’t have the technical infrastructure to do so. Although fares changes often, they are always consistent at any moment in time; anyone booking the same flights for the same number of passengers at the exact same second will always pay the same fare.

It is possible that in rare situations if you make two identical searches within a short period of time the 2nd search might use “cached” results and show the same fares as the first search, even if the price had actually changed. However, before you complete your purchase we and other sites always double-check the fare, so in that scenario you would be alerted to a price change before confirming. In the end, you are always paying the correct, current fare.

  15. My partner and I are planning a trip for August 2014 to Amsterdam and home from Budapest on September 19th 2014. In between we are doing a viking cruise. The cheaper flights right now are between $1300 and $1400, but it is still quite a ways out. Do you think we should wait-I was wondering because I have seen a notice on a few of the cheaper flights with the times we prefer that there are “only x number of seats left at this price”. Thanks!

    • Hi Gary,

Based on what you’re seeing, I would recommend to book sooner than later. Since you’re looking for specific flights that coordinate with your cruise, you should book a little earlier than usual to ensure you get the flights you want. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  16. We are looking at booking a multi city ticket, LAX-Frankfurt-Berlin-LHR-LHR-LAX in late September 2014. The price has been steady, up or down a few dollars, for a while now. I have two concerns, one when to book the tickets as we have certain time restrains, and two when can we pick our seats. It used to be that you could reserve your seat when you book but now it seems you have to wait until 24 hours before the flight. Please help!!! Thank you.

    • Hi Arlene,

For your multi-city trip, I would recommend booking sooner than later. Reason being is that you’re looking for certain times which limits your options, so booking earlier is best in your case. As for seat assignments, that will depend on the airline(s) you are flying. Some airlines will allow you to pre-purchase a certain seat after your reservation has been made. Otherwise, if you do not want to pay for an assigned seat the airline will automatically assign you a seat at the time of check-in.

  17. First, thank you for the informative report. Second, my wife and I are traveling to Okinawa in mid-May to visit son and family. Have we waited too long to purchase our tickets? They seemed to be cheaper a month ago which seems to validate your findings. Thanks for any advice you might have. T

    • Hi Terry,

Yes, you should have booked your flights earlier. Unfortunately with international travel, it is best to book earlier at times depending on the location, seasonality, etc… I would recommend to purchase your flights as soon as possible to avoid the fares from increasing any more. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  18. Hello CheapAir,

My wife, me, and our baby will be flying from Oklahoma City to Manila (OKC to MNL) during the busy Christmas and New Year holidays, leaving around December 20 and returning around January 4, give or take a few days on both ends. So I’m thinking we should try to buy tickets around July? What do you think?

    • Hi Randall,

That sounds like a great plan. Booking way early in advance for flights that are during/around the peak holiday season is a smart move. Definitely let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  19. This is a great report! My husband and I, plus another couple are traveling to Dominical in Costa Rica from October 12-19. This is isn’t during there peak travel season so we are undecided on when to purchase. While we think we can stick it out awhile and get a cheaper flight, we don’t want to wait too long. What would you suggest?

    • Hi Jessica,

Depending on where you’re traveling from, I would recommend to book about 90+ days or more prior to your departure in October. That would put you right around early July. I’d encourage you to keep monitoring the fares and buy if you’re noticing the pricing are only increasing. If you’re not seeing much movement, then I’d keep holding out. Definitely let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

      • Thanks for the information! I completely forgot to add that we are flying out of Austin, TX. :)

        • Hi Jessica,

Thanks for providing us with that information. In checking the fares for your dates, prices are currently starting at around $734 per person, not including any baggage fees. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1fFmIl2 (Depending on whether you’re flexible with your flight time, would determine if you should wait it out more or book earlier than normal.) Currently seats are selling for the lowest classes of service, so I would recommend that you continue to monitor the fares and be ready to purchase when you find the flights you want at the price you like. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  20. This is an awesome article and thank you for the tips! One last question though ( and I may be a bit slower than everyone here) but I am still trying to figure out exactly what 54 days would look like. Do you count from the date of arrival, or the day prior to the arrival for the 54 days. For example, I want to arrive in DC from LAX on July 18th, does this mean that I should look to buy my ticket on May 25th or May 26th? Just want to make sure so I don’t miss the “prime” window. =) Thanks again for all your help!!

    • Hi Xavier,

Great question. The 54 days is from the date of your departing flight. We recommend booking around this time to get the best deal on flights, but a lot of factors go into when you should exactly buy. For flights to DC on July 18th, it would be best to book sometime in May, but I would advise to monitor the fares from April onward since depending on whether you’re flexible with your flight time or if you must fly into a certain airport in the DC area that can impact the flight costs. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  21. My wife and I are traveling Atlanta to Barbados specifically July 9 return July 15. Should I wait a little while (101 day window) or book now due to specific dates. I have seen the price rise $20 over last 7 to 10 days but that might be a minor blip ??

    • Hi John,

For your flights from Atlanta to Barbados in July, you should probably book sooner than the 101 day window. In checking flights for your dates, we’re seeing the lowest classes of service are selling out which means fares are likely to rise. I would suggest to purchase sometime sooner than later to avoid the fares from increasing any more. To view flight schedule and book you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1eSJv1j Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  22. I am planning to travel to canada(toronto) from singapore…it would be frm 9th june to 18th..depends…any suggestions on when to book and which airline?

    • Hi Muhammad,

For your flights from Singapore to Toronto, I would recommend to purchase sooner than later. We’re only 3 months out from your departure in June, so I wouldn’t delay your purchase any longer. Please let me know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

      • Hi, I would really need your help to provide me a few suggested airlines. I understand the total journey would take atleast 24hrs. So, a comfortable economy class flight would be really usefull for me.

  23. I was pricing tickets to Barcelona in June 26- going out of Miami – checking both US Air and American where I had my miles (which of course I couldn’t use for the ticket). The airfare had been steady until American’s went up $1000 but US Air same route was the same. I bought it February 26 – 4 months out ! Thank goodness..the next day…all the flights were sold out. Whew.

    • Hi Shari,

It’s always best to try to monitor the flights you’re looking for as early as possible to get a sense of pricing. Happy to hear you got that cheap flight you wanted. Have a wonderful time visiting Barcelona.

  24. I am looking to book tickets to St.thomas – STT for dec 20th from DCA. I see a price of $526.00. Do I have to wait for the price to drop?

    • Hi Venky,

Are you only looking for one-way flights? If so, then you still have some time to keep monitoring the fares more. I’d be sure to book by June/July though to be safe since you’ll be traveling around the holiday season which is a very busy travel time.

  25. Hi, I’d like to book a flight from New York (EWR) to London (LHR) for the first time-is there a peak / offpeak season I should be aware of? Also, does the 151 day rule apply here as well? I’ve read that the NYC-LON route is pretty busy, but as a student I’d like to get the lowest fare. Thanks for your help!

    • Hi Henry,

Since you sound pretty flexible with your travel dates, I would recommend trying our MapSearch which will show you a calendar of airfares with the cheapest days to book on. This is a great tool when you are flexible with your dates of travel. New York to London is a popular route, so be sure to purchase with enough advance. The low season for London is during the winter months, so I’d aim for around then… but keep in mind to avoid the holidays when possible since prices will be high around that time. Please let us know if you need any help finding flights.

  26. Hi,

    What a great article!

Also, I have a question and would appreciate if you could help me on this. I am visiting Thailand (Phuket) this Summer (31 May – 9 June). I have booked all my accommodation, but yet to book the flight. I was wondering about when is the best time to book the flight? I am currently living in London UK for your information. Thanks in advance!

    • Hi Samuel,

For your flights to Thailand in May/June, you should book now or as soon as you can. We’re about 3 months away from your departure, so you’ll want to act fast.

  27. As I fly a bit I found this article very interest but have one question?
Since the timing date is so exact, For US flights, do you mean 54 days BEFORE the flight or do you mean 54 days INCLUDING the flight day.

    • Hi Mary,

Great question. We’re referring to the day your flight departs. While the 54 days is a good rule, it doesn’t apply to every flight for every route and everyone. As we mentioned there are General Ticket Buying Strategies that travelers should take into account when searching for flights. If you provide us with your routing and dates, we’d be happy to check the fares for you and inform you when we think you should buy.

  28. My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon to Cancun, Mexico, live in Texas. We are planning to leave on Sunday, July 20th and return Sunday, July 27th. We are currently waiting to get his passport back since he had to renew it and should be back by March 28th so we can’t purchase our flights until then. Will there be a chance prices actually go down by then or up?
    Thanks!

    • Hi Felicia,

You can still purchase your flights without the passport information at the time of booking. You’ll just need the passport by the time you fly. If you don’t have it by then, then that will prevent you from traveling internationally. Since you’re not flying until the end of July, you still have some time to keep monitoring the fares more. I’d be sure to book at minimum 90 days out from your departure. Without knowing where in Texas you’re departing from, we are unable to check the pricing. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  29. Hey John,
What time would be the best to book for the weekend of the 4th of July, to fly from to East Coast from San Francisco? Do you think it’s worth it to book now or better wait?
    Thanks a lot!

    • Hi Leon,

For 4th of July travel, you should book now or as soon as you possibly can. Flights will be higher than usual during the peak July 4th holiday, so it is always wise to purchase well in advance when flying around/during busy holiday times. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  30. Hey,

I was looking into airfares for Japan around August, more specifically to be there by Friday the 15th for the SummerSonic festival. I was I missed a chance to get tickets for around $1000 about 3 weeks ago (had a long layover in Houston). Now they are averaging around $1600 a pop. Is it safe to say I missed the best price for my destination?

    • Hi Terry,

Based on what you’ve experienced, it sounds like the airlines have begun to increase the pricing. It is possible that the airlines may be fluctuating the pricing to see what travelers are willing to pay. Without knowing where you are departing from, it is difficult to check the fares to see. Ultimately, we’re about five and a half months out from your departure in August so you should be ready to buy your flights sooner than later since we found booking about 130 days prior to your departure is about the best time to buy. Of course there are some exceptions to this, which we mention in our General Ticket Buying Strategies. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  31. Sorry, forgot to mention I would be leaving from Boston. Do you think those prices would remain consistent then? Maybe fluctuate a little bit obviously. I wouldn’t mind paying about $100 more for tickets for waiting too long. The thing that concerned me was that big price jump from a $1000ish to $1600ish. Hoping it would have gone down since I don’t have the money saved up yet.

    • Hi Terry,

Thank you for providing us with that information. Is there a return date? Or is this a one-way trip?

  32. There isn’t a return date, but we plan to spend at least ten days and at most 15. And we would like to be flying into Tokyo. At this time we are thinking August 14thish to the 25thish (would have to make sure we are there by the 15th). Thanks for the help.

    • Hi Terry,

Thank you for providing us with those details. In checking the fares for your dates, it does look like the cheapest classes of service are filling up. Since you’re not traveling until August you still have some time to continue to monitor the fares and see if they drop down any, but really its a gamble if the airlines are going to drop the price. It will depend on how those flights sell and if they are selling out, then the prices will only keep climbing… but if they don’t sell out there’s a chance the airline could drop the price to get travelers interested.

  33. Hi there,

I am planning a trip to Israel from Oct. 5-16, 2014. We’re traveling from Minneapolis, MN, what is the best time to purchase my tickets?
    Thanks for your help!

    • Hi Kate,

For your flights in October, I would recommend to purchase sooner than later. In checking the flights it does appear that seats are selling out in the lower classes of service, so I’d suggest to not put your purchase off too much longer. I’d be sure to buy no later than June. 34. Thank you for the wonderful site and advice.

My wife and I are attempting to plan a trip to Kauai this fall and think we have the costs approximated, but are looking for some advice.

The two sets of dates are fixed, but they can be swapped:
    DTW –> SFO: Oct 3th
    SFO –> LIH: Oct 3th
    LIH –> DTW: Oct 10th

    or

    DTW –> SFO: Oct 10th
    SFO –> LIH: Oct 12th
    LIH –> DTW: Oct 17th

It looks like when attempting the same trip ~8-12 weeks out from now, the floor (with Delta, the airline we have miles/credit card with) is ~$1050. For our week(s) in Oct it’s ~1147-1166. Do you think at this point it makes sense to wait a few more weeks or simply pull the trigger now? It appears to be going down over the past couple weeks, but since it’s a specific location and small airport in a peak season I’m concerned.

    • Hi Drew,

In checking the fares for both of those dates, it does look like flights are filling up. I would recommend to continue to monitor the fares a little more to see if the pricing drops any, but I would suggest to purchase sooner than later to avoid the flights from completely filling up. There is no difference in cost for those dates. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  35. My wife and I are flying round trip from Philly to Portland 7/24-8/9.

I am surprised by how much more expensive a round trip, non-stop, ticket from PHL (Philly) to PDX (Portland) was ($583) than PHL to SFO (San Fran) was last year ($299). Now, granted, we were traveling in late April and early May last year instead of late July and early August but the price still seems inflated. I have checked other two week flight windows from April through September from PHL to PDX and last found the lowest non-stop fare to be $393, for travel in April and May, and second highest to our own to be $540 for travel in other parts of July and August.

One other extenuating factor in the case of PHL to PDX is that there is only one non-stop flight per day whereas there were about a half dozen non-stops from PHL to SFO from competing airlines.

Am I fooling myself by thinking waiting will yield a lower rate? Of note, the fare went from $629, where it had sat for about two weeks, to $649 on Monday, to $602 yesterday afternoon, to $583 yesterday evening. Maybe I should just take the 10% rate cut and run with it?

    • Hi Matt,

Based on what you’re seeing, I would recommend to keep monitor the fares more. It seems like the airlines are fluctuating the pricing to see if they can get interest. I’d recommend to check the fares early in the morning and early in the week like on Tuesday or Wednesday. Fares on average are a little higher than they were in 2013, but you cannot compare different routes and expect the same prices. San Francisco is a much larger airport with many more flights than Portland, which is why the pricing is lower since there’s more inventory. We’re still 4+ months out from your departure in July, so keep monitoring the fares more and be ready to buy if you see the fares dropping again. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1g14vTI Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  36. Thanks so much for posting this information. I am really impressed that you’re answering questions about specific travel plans! I’ve been watching flights from PDX to DCA nonstop for travel from Jul 2 to Jul 13, and prices have been pretty steady. I have it on my calendar to purchase tickets within the window recommended in this post. Good plan? Or will folks be rushing to our nation’s capital for the holiday? Thanks!

    • Hi AF,

Since you are traveling around the busy July 4th holiday, I would recommend purchasing sooner than later since fares will be high around the holidays. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1eYjEVJ Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  37. Hi

This is a great article, thanks for the information. I live in Melbourne, Australia and my husband and I are travelling to Dubai and Oman in February 2015. What is the best time, in you opinion, to buy our flights? Any assistance/guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    • Hi Carol,

Unfortunately we do not specialize in flights that do not either depart or return from the U.S. or Canada. With that said, I would suggest booking at least 2 months in advance, but I would recommend that you monitor the fares starting about 6 months out from your departure.

      • Thanks for the reply, that has helped enormously, maybe one day you could include the South Pacific in your research???

  38. Hi. I want to fly to Brazil or Argentina in late summer or early autumn 2014. I live in Philly, but traveling to Newark or JFK for the flight isn’t a problem. So I am flexible on the dates of travel and airport to depart and arrive. Any best case (cheapest) suggestions on locations to take off/land and time of year?

    • Hi Phil,

Since you are flexible with your travel dates and even airports, you’ll definitely get the cheapest fares. I would recommend using the CheapAirMapSearch which will allow you to enter your departing city and view a map of airfares showing you where you can go and for how much. If you scroll to Brazil or Argentina, you can click on the destination. After you click the destination, a calendar of airfares showing the cheapest dates will come up. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  39. Hi there!

I am planning a trip to Fiji in end of June 2014 departing from pdx,to lax then Nadi International. I’m wondering if im late to pay my airfare. Please advice and thank u.

    • Hi Tieri,

For your flights at the end of June, I would recommend purchasing sooner than later since Fiji has a limited number of flights and the summer months are a popular season. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  40. I plan to fly to Austin, TX from Myrtle Beach, SC on Memorial Day weekend. What is your suggestion on the best time to book? Thanks

    • Hi TAS,

Since you’re planning to fly during a peak travel time, you should book sooner than later to avoid the fares from getting very expensive. Anytime you’re traveling during a holiday weekend or a peak travel time, you should book as soon as you can since that’s usually the best strategy for getting the best fares.

  41. I’m from Montreal and I plan to be in SFO at a fixed date (May 10th), but I have very flexible departure dates and wouldn’t want to spend more than 5 days in the city. Recently, the prices dropped , but I missed my opportunity. The prime window of 54 days is getting closer, so what would you advise me based on your experience?

    Thank you!

    • Hi Mark,

Since we’re less than 2 months out from May, you should book your flights sooner than later to avoid the fares from increasing any more. Being that you’re sort of flexible with the flight time, it is possible the fares might drop a little, but I wouldn’t put off your purchase too much longer. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  42. Hi!
I’m from Tallinn, Estonia (Europe) and I plan to travel to Austin in the summer.. The flight dates would be about June 30th – July 8th. Any idea when I should buy the plane tickets?
    Thank you!

    • Hi Diane,

For your flights to Austin in the summer, you should purchase sooner than later. We’re 3+ months out from your departure, so you should look to buy as soon as you can. The summer time in the U.S. is a peak time to travel. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1iiKFUz Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  43. Hi, my family and I want to go to the Dominican Republic. When do you think is the best time to buy the tickets? Right now the cheapest I find is $475.
    Thank you.

    • Hi Stephanie,

Without knowing where you are departing from, it is difficult for us to check the fares… but generally speaking, you should expect the cheapest fares for the Dominican Republic to be during the low season which is May to August. Since you seem flexible with your dates of travel, I’d recommend using our MapSearch which will allow you to enter your home airport and view a map of destinations with fares. If you scroll and hover over the Dominican Republic and click the fare, you’ll be shown a calendar of airfares with the cheapest dates to travel. Please let us know if you have any questions.

  44. Thank you for the information. I just want to be clear, so I have a question. I am looking to go from Tulsa,OK to Newark,NJ for my daughter’s wedding. Obviously, I know the dates already. (Sept 4-Sept7) Your advise would be to go ahead and purchase and then if rates drop, cheapair will reimburse the difference if the flight goes down? Is that the price on the day of departure? Just not sure since prices fluctuate weekly. Thank you!

    • Hi Vicki,

Our exclusive Price Drop Payback lets you buy airfare with confidence. When you buy your ticket from CheapAir, if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket!

Price Drop Payback is available only for customers of CheapAir.com. It applies automatically to every ticket that we sell. And best of all, it’s totally free!

  45. I’m planning a trip from Portland, OR to Athens and it has to be for the specific dates of September 20-27. Does that mean I should buy my ticket next month?

    • Hi Cary,

Since you have specific dates of travel and are traveling internationally, it would be wise to purchase your flights sooner than later. I’d recommend buying them as soon as you can, since the pricing looks pretty good for your dates. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1kCGIdK Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  46. Hi. Tks for this useful info.

Planning a trip to Vietnam in October. Worried of certain layovers.

What is a safe layover to ensure we don’t miss a connecting flight?

Flying from Canada. Do we have to handle luggage before getting to VT?

    Any help welcome.

    • Hi Charline,

Typically any lay-over should be safe, but you could consider a less popular airport to connect through which might be better than a busy airport. All flight layovers will meet the minimum connection times that are required. Otherwise, as long as you purchase your flights together at the same time, then you should not have to worry about your baggage transferring. You can always call us at 1-800-243-2724 to speak with one of our Travel Advisors who can assist you with your flights and any questions.

  47. For my and my fiancee’s honeymoon, we’re flying to Toronto on June 30 and back from Montreal on July 7. That means we’ll be there for Canada Day (July 1). Does that mean I should book earlier? Or should I keep waiting?

    • Forgot to add: We’re flying from JAX to any airport in Toronto, anytime on June 30.

      • Hi Andrew,

Thank you for providing us with that information. Since you are set with your dates and traveling during the summer, you should purchase your flights sooner than later. I’d suggest actually purchasing within the next month or so since fares are likely to only get more expensive. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  48. Thanks for this article! I’m hoping to go to the Philippines in early October from the Washington, DC area and prefer the least amount of layovers possible. When’s the best time to book that kind of flight? Would the length of stay/days of departure help make a difference in price?

    • Hi Faye,

The flights with the least layovers will be more sought after flights, which means they could sell out faster so I’d suggest buying earlier than later. For your flights to the Philippines, it would good to purchase your flights about 130 days or more out from your departure in October. To check dates and search flights, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1j2WBIA Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  49. Our group of 4 will be traveling from Chicago to Barcelona and returning from Venice to Chicago mid to late September. When should we book our tickets? They seem to be holding around 1250 to 1350. Any chance the prices will go down or should we book now?
Thanks for your report and help.

    • Hi Patty,

Since you have a group of 4, you should book sooner vs later since its less likely there will be 4 seats at a cheaper price the longer you wait. I’d suggest booking at minimum 150 days out from your departure in September. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  50. My wife and I are planning on going to Ireland in mid-July. We’ve missed the 151 days window for purchase to Europe (and presume that this is pretty generalized, as the window will vary depending on which country you’re going to). Are there other timeframes for purchase that are also better than others (obviously, the longer we wait the worse the cost will be)?

    • Hi Michael,

You summed it up pretty well. Those figures are generalized and there are a lot of factors that actually go into each route. For flights in mid-July it would be wise to purchase your flights sooner than later since fares will only get more expensive the closer it gets to the date of travel. Since we’re about 4 months out, I’d recommend being ready to purchase your flights within the month or so. Of course, our General Ticket Buying Strategies are good guidelines to follow if you are departing from a smaller city or larger city. Definitely let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  51. This article was very helpful. I too have questions on traveling to Hawaii. I’m planning on flying from Denver to Honolulu the third week of May, and returning the day before Memorial Day. The websites with airfare predictors constantly say they are 70-79% sure that airfare will drop $20+ within seven days, but they still aren’t dropping and the best (United) flights are around $815+. Do you think this will go down? My 54 day window is this coming Saturday, and I’m wondering if I should wait or go ahead and buy my ticket??

Any advice is greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!

    • Hi Elizabeth,

Based on everything, I would suggest waiting till next week, like Tuesday or possibly Wednesday to see if the fare drops any. If you are not seeing any drop in the fare then I would buy. Airlines will often release sales early in the week, so unless there is a sale, I don’t suspect those fares will drop much if any. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  52. I read the advice here on cheapair last year and decided to wait and book my flight for two to Barbados around the 28th or 29th closer to the recommended time frame. Well that decision look like it was terrible.

As of the 14th of January a trip to Barbados from NYC on the 29th and returning back in August 5th was around $475 per person, down from $590 on the 31st of December 2013. As of now the same flight is $763.

    Huge mistake.

    • Hi James,

We are sorry to hear that. There are a lot of factors that go into when to buy. Our articles are general guidelines for when to buy and do not specifically apply to every route and date. For specific advice, it is best to call or e-mail us to speak with a Travel Advisor. Please let us know if you need any assistance with your travels.

  53. We are planning à trip to India leaving the 2nd week of november 2014 for a three week stay. When do you think is the best time to reserve flight ticket. Leaving from Montreal to Delhi.

    • Hi Diane,

For your flights in mid-November, I’d recommend to purchase sometime in next few months or so. I’d suggest to continue to monitor the fares and be ready to buy when you find the flights you like at a price you like. Flights with less stops will get purchased faster so I’d give yourself plenty of time prior to your departure to book your flights. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/OOHf19 Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  54. Hi, am planning on flying one way domestically and then one way to New Zealand. in September. When would the best time to buy be?

    • Hi Tim,

Without knowing where you are departing from and heading to domestically, we are unable to check the fares and advise you. Generally speaking though, for flights to New Zealand, I would suggest booking at minimum 75+ days prior to your departure date.

  55. A Trip advisory can not do anything. Airlines don’t add flights so no Holiday for me.

  56. I have a group planned for a cruise out of Miami Feb 22, 2015. When would be the best time to book flights from Sacramento – Miami. We don’t necessarily need to fly together but get there between 1-2 days before sailing date.

    • Hi Marvin,

Since you are coordinating your flights with a cruise, you’ll want to book earlier than normal to ensure you get the flights you want. For your flights in February 2015, I’d recommend to monitor the fares from about May/June onward and book when you find the flights you like a price you like. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  57. flying to aruba with my family 2 adults and 2 children ages 7 and 11 in mid august. want nonstop only. leaving from new york or newark and flying in to AUA. we are going for a week and are leaving monday the 18th. any assistance would be helpful

    • Hi Peter,

Currently fares for your dates are starting from $584 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. JFK airport looks to be the cheapest airport. I’d suggest to purchase your flights sooner than later to avoid the fares from increasing. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1heRlTq Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  58. Hi there!

I’m planning to fly to Sydney in September on maybe the 12th from Singapore. When would be the best time to book tickets?

    Thanks! (:

    • Hi Felin,

For your flights, I’d suggest purchasing sometime in the next couple months. I’d continue to monitor the fares and purchase when you find the flights you like at the price you like.

  59. Hi, I am looking for a flight to Budapest from Oklahoma city. The dates are: leaving from Budapest on 15th of June and coming back from Budapest on 12-18 of August. When do you think is the best time to book my ticket? i was looking already for 2 months almost every day and the tickets are still around $1,400. Thank you

    • Hi Mihaela,

I would recommend booking your flights sooner than later since we’re about two and a half months out from your departure. If you continue to wait, the fares are likely to increase especially the closer we get to your departure date. I’d suggest to purchase the flights as soon as you can. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1ojLMIO Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  60. Hello,

Thanks so much for this info!

Question: Does the Euro 151 rule also apply the other way around? That is, should a person in Europe follow the same general guideline? My wife and I are flying her Czech mom who lives in Prague, to San diego (our home) for a vacation and trying to figure the best time to buy. Thank you!

    • Hi Keith,

Yes and no. While the 151 rule is still valid, depending on the time of year can greatly impact when you should buy. For example, if you’re looking to fly her out during a holiday, then you should definitely book earlier than normal. Otherwise, it would be a safe bet to book around the 151 day mark. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1qg331j Definitely let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  61. why did you delete my post? I was asking you a question. I am going to re-post it.

I was thinking of going to Peru on Dec 26th til Jan 3rd. As of right now the airfare is $1335. Should I book it now or wait til later this summer like August or September?
    Thanks

    • Hi David,

Sorry about that. Thank you for re-posting.

Since you’re looking to travel around the holiday time here in the U.S., I’d suggest booking your flights sooner than later since flights around the holidays will be more expensive and tend to get booked fast. In checking the fares for your route, I’m finding the cheapest fares starting from $946 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/PU0d6I Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  62. Hi! I’m planning a trip from Boston to Italy (going into Rome, leave from Venice) for Sept 25-Oct 6 (have some flexibility to move dates +/- 2 days). I’ve been monitoring flights, and they seem to have jumped quite a bit in the past week. The 151 days will be at the end of April. Do you think it makes sense to wait, or to buy now.

    Thanks!

    • Hi Ella,

Based on what you’re seeing, I would suggest to purchase now. The 151 days is a general rule to follow and by no means an exact count for every international flight route to Europe. Since you are a little flexible with your dates, you could hold out for another week or so just to see if they drop any, but I’d definitely advise to buy soon. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  63. When should I book my flight?
    FAT -> DTW
    July 1- July 30

    • Hi Lee,

Since you’ll be departing close to the July 4th holiday, you’ll want to book sooner than later. I’d suggest booking by the end of April at the latest, but I’d probably book now. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1sHLnQd Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  64. I would like to book a trip to cancun the end of june or the second week of july when should i purchase flight tickets they seem to be really expensive now.

    • Hi Helen,

For flights to Cancun in June/July, you should book as soon as possible. Since we’re about 9 weeks out from June, booking now would be best since the fares will only get more expensive the closer we get to your dates of travel. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  65. We’re moving to Belize in October from south Florida. American is the only airline w/non-stop flights (2) to Belize City out of Miami (an hour away). We only need a 1-way ticket but the cost is only $100 less than a R.T. ticket. Would I gain anything by bidding to buy a lower price ticket or would this be an exercise in futility? Also, what would be the optimal time for purchasing the tickets (2 of us)—Miami to Belize City?

    • Hi Rick,

Since you only need a one-way flight, I wouldn’t pay the $100 more for a round-trip flight. There is nothing to gain when purchasing a return when you do not need it. As for when you should book your flights, I would suggest booking no later than August, but I’d recommend to keep monitoring the fares. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1qWZiy7 Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  66. Hello,

What would be your recommendation for purchasing a flight to Denver on Wednesday, July 2nd?

    • Hi Adam,

For any flights during or around the busy July 4th holiday, you should book now or as soon as possible. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

      • If you could help me find the cheapest flights available this week that would be very helpful. Thank you for the response.

  67. Am flying in September and want to get to Bologna Italy. My brother-in-law says I should fly into Florence Italy and take the train to Bologna. Why would I not fly directly to Bologna?
Thx, have been enjoying reading all your info.

    • Hi Carol,

Bologna is a smaller city then Florence so there are likely to be more flight options and therefore cheaper flights. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  68. We plan a trip from McAllen texas to cabo san lucas in February, when would it
    be best to but ticket?

    • Hi Gary,

For your flights to Cabo in February, you’ll want to book at minimum 90 days prior to your departure. I’d recommend to keep an eye on the fares and continue to monitor them and book when you find the flights you like at a price you like. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1m3Y2cf Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  69. I would like to book tickets for my family from Houston to Islamabad Pakistan for mid Dec 2014. Please advise as to what would be the best time to purchase the tickets.

    • Hi Aftab,

For your flights in mid-December, it would be wise to book sometime before October at the latest. We recommend booking at minimum 80+ days in advance, but I’d continue to keep monitoring the fares more and be ready to purchase when you find the flights you like at the price you like.

  70. we are planning to go to Athens, Greece from Washington DC on 6 October 2014 and go by ship to Venice and then onto Cologne, Germany. From Munich, Germany depart back to DC on or about 12 Nov 2014. What is the best way to buy airline tickets and when. I assume open jaws from DC to Athens and Munich to DC. Your recommendation please

    • Hi SE,

You can book that routing using our “Multi-City” search from our home page: http://www.cheapair.com Since you are traveling to Europe, it would be best to purchase your flights well in advance since you are planning to take a cruise. I’d be sure to purchase by June/July at the latest, but it would be wise to book as soon as you can. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  71. I’m planning on a trip to Manila ( MNL) from Atlanta (ATL) end of August first part of September. My dates are flexible. In your opinion should I jump on the $1100-$1200 ticket prices that are posted now or wait for the recommended time window

    • Hi Howard,

I would recommend to purchase the flights now versus waiting. Since you’re looking to depart in August/September it would be best to book sooner than later. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1err7hE Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  72. Here’s a complicated trip (and sorry if it has already been asked). I want to travel to China (Shanghai or Beijing) the first part of July for two weeks. I will fly from LA and my son will come from Washington DC. It would be nice to end up on the same flight but I am fine which just arriving in the same airport within a few hours of one another. I am checking flights now and can see that is what you will recommend. Any other suggestions?

    • Hi Katie,

In order to sync up you and your son’s flights, we’d need to know the exact dates. You can call us at 1-800-243-2724 to speak with a Travel Advisor who can assist you with this. Please let us know if you have any questions.

  73. Thank you for the detailed, useful and unprecedented review!

  74. I am planning a trip from New York City to Georgetown, Guyana from JFK for October 4 – 22, 2014. What is the best time to book this flight? Should I book now or book later? Thanks.

    • Hi Bibi,

The cheapest flights for your dates are starting at around $683 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. If you can travel October 3 – 21, then fares are starting at around $520 per person. If you must keep those dates, then I’d recommend to purchase your flights sooner than later. To view flights and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/Q7BIn1 Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  75. Hello,
Thanks for this Q&A! We plan to fly from Richmond, VA to Honolulu on October 13 with a return on October 25. I have been watching fares for a while now, but as it gets closer am trying to figure out the best time to buy, Your suggestion please? Thanks

    • Hi Beth,

Currently, fares for your dates are starting at around $1107 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. That’s not a horrible price, but since you’re not departing till October, you still have some time to continue to monitor the fares more. I’d be certain to purchase no later than mid July to be safe. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1n76ydi Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  76. Going with friends to Virgin Islands from JFK in May. I knew how much my friends paid and what flights they were on but I choose to book directly with American Airlines and use their fare price guarantee. The difference was $40. I emailed it all in and never heard back. Since it was one of those crazy weather weekends I figured they were busy and waited. When I contacted them again they said they had replied and asked for more info. I told them I had not received any email from them. They refused to give me the same fare even though they themselves were offering that same fare on that day! A friend suggested it could have gone in my junk mail. Sure enough, with a big yellow warning box on top of the email Gmail said “This message contains content that is typically used in spam messages” Funny how I get a zillion emails from AA because I am an Advantage member but this important email is designed to look like spam!

There is a 6 hour window with American Airlines to get their fare guarantee. Dealing directly with that airline was worse than dealing with an internet site for customer satisfaction. When you find a lower price book it, don’t rely on an airline to keep a promise!

    • Hi Brenda,

Sorry to hear about that experience. Definitely let us know if you need any assistance with your future travels. We’re always here to help.

  77. Hi,
I really loved your article! Very informative.
We are trying to book our annual trip from DFW – Hawaii over the Christmas holiday, and fares seem more expensive this year than in the past. We are some what flexible — departure Dec 19 or 20th, return Jan 1 – Jan 6th. Currently, the cheapest combination is Dec 19th – Jan 6th on American (our airline of choice). The price has been $1300 for the last week or so. Should I monitor for awhile longer, or book?

    • Hi Tammy,

For flights around and during the holiday season, you should always book earlier than usual. Since the holidays are one of the busiest travel times in the year, the airlines know this and will increase the fares based on the demand. Hawaii is also a popular Christmas getaway, so I’d recommend booking once you find the flights you like at the price you like.

  78. What about finding out about a flight to the Catskills (Delhi and Oneonta NY) in late September for a wedding? There are so many flights to various cities, all of which are about 75 to 120 miles from the town the wedding is being held in so obviously we will have to rent a car. More importantly since this is my only nephew’s wedding and we plan to go out on Wednesday and return the following Monday to attend all the activities Friday through Sunday and not be exhausted how do I find out when to book as well as which airports can or cant work for my 95 year old mother who is in a walker and has major mobility problems???? WE obviously dont want to do more than one connection to not tire her as well.

    • Hi Pattyp,

For your flights, I would recommend booking sooner than later. Since there are a lot of flight options, I think it would be best for you to call us at 1-800-243-2724 to speak with a Travel Advisor who can assist you with the flights as well as a rental car.

  79. Hi,
    Looking to book 2 from
mem memphis to ogg maui aug 2-aug 12

What is the best time to purchase this fare?
    Thanks so much,
    K

    • Hi Karen,

The cheapest flights from Memphis to Maui for your dates are starting at around $1243 per person, not including any baggage fees that nay apply. August is a peak time for Maui so you’ll want to book now or as soon as you can. 80. Hi,
Looking to book from FAT to DTW from 7/1/14 to 7/30/14
    when should i start booking?
    Thanks (:

    • Hi Lee,

For your flights in July, it would be best to book within the month. Currently, fares from Fresno to Dallas for your dates are starting at around $398 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1sHLnQd Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  81. First off, love the site and the advice here. Thank you!

Looking at taking the family to Disney/Orlando for spring break 2015. Departing 3/22 and coming back around the 27th or 28th. Prefer nonstop BHM to MCO, since we’re traveling with smaller kids. When should I be ready to pull the trigger and book?

    Thanks again!

    • Hi Brandon,

For your flights from Birmingham to Orlando in March 2015, you’ll want to book sometime by January 1st. I’d suggest to begin monitoring the fares starting from October onward. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  82. great website!! love the information.
I am planning a DTW-KOA-LIH-DTW trip over Christmas and New Years.
Do you suggest shopping for airfare beginning of June as a multi-leg?
I do want my luggage checked to the final destination so I do not want to buy each leg separately (plus I have two small children)
I am open to suggestions :)
    thanks!

    • Hi Mica,

Yes, booking a multi-leg flight would be best in order for your baggage to transfer through. For any flights during or around the peak holiday season, you should book as soon as you can. Since that is an extremely popular time for travel, airlines will try to charge more for these flights so the sooner you can get them the better. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. You can search for multi-leg trips on our home page by clicking the “multi-city” button which will allow you to add additional legs to your itinerary.

  83. Hi I want to go to barbados from August 1 and return the 8 August when should I book as am seeing flights like 800.00 leaving from miami, Florida.

    • Hi Kay,

Currently, fares from Miami to Barbados for those dates are starting at around $725 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. I’d recommend to book sooner than later. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1f2ap8R Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  84. Need to fly from Des Moines , IA to Galveston – Sept 6-14. Only 1 flight goes out of Des Moines during the day on average. Cost is about $367 before taxes. Have to buy 2 tickets so need lower pricing. That is high for me. Southwest is the cheapest airline, I have found so fas. Really hoping the price will drop. What do you think? Looks like Southwest only flys to Hobby Airport in Houston, TX from Des Moines.

    • Hi Kim,

Unfortunately you cannot fly into Galveston. You would have to fly into Houston. Currently, the cheapest fares for your dates from Des Moines to Houston is starting at around $335 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. If you are able to travel on Sept 5 – 13, then fares are a little cheaper starting at around $310 per person. Since you’re not traveling till September, you have some time to keep monitoring the fares more. I’d recommend to have your flights purchased by late June at the latest. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  85. Hello My family of 4 is wanting to fly out to Oaxaca, Oaxaca from 12/26/14-1/7/15 our days and times are flexible, so far the tickets are ranging in price from 580-650, I am looking for better prices. Any suggestions?

    • Hi Julie,

We will need to know where you are departing from in order to check flights. Generally speaking, international flights to Mexico should be booked about 80 days prior to your departure, however since you’ll be traveling during the peak holiday season, I’d suggest booking earlier than usual since fares will be higher than normal due to the holidays. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  86. Im sorry, I can either depart from San Antonio, Texas or DFW, which ever is cheapest.

    • Hi Julie,

Both San Antonio and Dallas are similar in costs, with Dallas being a little cheaper with fares starting at around $637 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. I’d suggest to book as soon as you can since there is a limited number of flights and as they fill up, the fares will only get more expensive. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1rkORo9 Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  87. I am planning on traveling from New Zealand to Italy over the Christmas break. I believe tickets for Europe are in low demand during the winter, thus I believe I should wait for the “151-days” rule. Am I doing the right thing?

    • Hi Miguel,

You are correct that Europe during the winter is in low demand. Since you’ll be traveling over the Christmas break, you’ll probably want to book sooner than the 151 days since that is a peak travel time due to the holidays. I’d recommend monitoring the fares now onward. I’d be sure to purchase at minimum 150 days prior to your departure in December. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  88. Great article!! My husband and I are looking to book flights from Houston to Beirut, then Beirut to Rome, and finally Venice back to Houston. We are planning to depart August 13, 2014 and come back on September 9, 2014. I found another article that suggested 60 days in advance, and more specifically, and on a Tuesday at midnight. We were wondering on when the best time to book might be. We looked at prices a little over a week ago and have already seen them start to go up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • Hi Bea,

That’s a great trip you have planned. I’d definitely recommend buying your flights sooner than later. Based on what you’re seeing with the prices going up a little, that can be an indicator that the fares will continue to increase. Typically airfares start out high, then drop down, and based on how well that route performs the fares will either go up (most likely case) or stay at the cheaper rate (if they cannot sell the flights). We are currently about 110 days out from your departure in August, so I’d suggest booking as soon as you can since its likely the fares will only get more expensive the closer we get to your departure. To book flights, I’d advise contacting us at 1-800-243-2724 to speak with a Travel Advisor who can assist you with multi-city trips.

  89. Thank you so very much for the fantastic research & article!!! I was wondering when I should book a flight from PDX to JAX on July 15, 2014. Thank you!!!!!

    • Hi Joyce,

Currently, fares from Portland to Jacksonville on July 15 are starting at around $290 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. I’d recommend to keep monitoring the fares a little more and be sure to purchase by late May at the latest. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/QIYHFb Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  90. Thank you so much for all the information you provided here.

I am looking for tickets for my family to travel from Boston to San Juan in Feb 2015 (spring break here). I would really appreciate your advise.

It always turns out to me though, I seem to find the cheapest tickets on the first day I start to search; as I search more and more, the price goes higher and higher, would you please comment on that?

    • Hi Michelle,

Typically when searching for airfares, depending on when you begin your search will impact how the fares will trend. For example, if you begin searching for flights 1 month before your departure, then you’re only going to see the ticket price increase as it gets closer to the departure date because you’re searching with less advance. However, if you begin your search 9 months in advance and monitor the fares, you’ll notice that they will actually fluctuate up and down. So yes, when you begin your search can impact whether or not you’ll only see the fares keep increasing or not. For your flights in February 2015, I’d suggest to book no later than December. After December is when the flights are likely to only keep increasing in cost. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  91. Hello,

This is the article I have been looking for, thank you for posting! I am planning a trip from NYC to SFO in early September. I’m still outside of the 104 day window, but have noticed prices have risen from $288 in March to $350 today. That seems pretty significant considering how far out it is! I was under the impression that it would go down, but now I’m not sure. Any advice would be helpful, thank you!

    • Hi Jessica,

That can greatly depend on the dates you are searching for. For example, if you are looking to travel during the peak Labor Day weekend, then you’ll want to book earlier than usual since its a very popular time to travel. Otherwise, then you still have time to keep monitoring the fares more. We’re about 4 months out from September still, so I’d be sure to book by early July at the latest. Since your flying from San Francisco to New York which are both huge markets, there’s more inventory to sell and therefore more likely chances that the fares will drop back down. Just be sure to buy when they do. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  92. Hi,

I am booking a multi-city flight from Tampa, FL to Bangkok, Thailand then Phuket back to Tampa in mid-Novemeber. The flight prices have been all over the place lowest $1500 all the way to $2100. I am I just looking way too early. Everything I’ve read is saying I should book late May early June, but as of today prices are about $2100. Please help me.

    -Chandra

    • Hi Chandra,

For your flights in mid-November, it would be best to book about 4+ months prior to your departure. We’re about 6 months out from November right now, so I’d suggest to continue to monitor the fares a little more to see if the price drops back down any. If you’re not seeing any decrease in the fares by mid-May to June, then I would suggest to buy to avoid the fares from increasing more. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  93. I booked tickets from LAX to HND(Japan) last week for 1K each. I cancelled the same day because I got approved for a mileage card and wanted to use the card for my purchase. Two days ago, the airline tickets increased by 300-600. Should I wait and see if it decreases? It was 1K for a short period and prior to that, it was around 1400.

    • Hi Rebecca,

That would depend on what your dates of travel are. For example, if you are traveling within the next 2 months, then you should buy as soon as possible. However, if you’re traveling in November, then I’d say to wait it out and see if the prices drop back down. Without knowing when you are traveling, it is difficult for us to advise you whether to buy now or wait. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

      • Sorry about that! I’m waiting to fly out July 23 and the return flight is Aug 1 or whatever is cheapest for the return flight.

        • Hi Rebecca,

Since you’re traveling in July, you’ll want to book sooner than later. We’re about two and half months out from your departure, so fares will be high and are likely to only continue to increase the closer it gets to your departure in July. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  94. @CheapAir, you always have amazing blog posts which are truly informative and useful. I am really thankful to you for sharing such useful posts. It is always difficult to travel cheap by air and your blogs have always proved useful to me when I have to make decisions regarding tickets.

  95. Great study, thanks for publishing it. My family of 6 is flying into Washington DC on Wed, July 2nd, from LAX (we need to be there before 7:30 pm that night), and flying out of Buffalo on Mon, July 14th to return to LAX.
I have been aware of this info (and the apparently updated 49 day info) for some time. I have been watching fares, and they fluctuate a bit, but recently many (for DC) have gone up quite a bit. Did I miss the window? Is it common for the prices to increase before the decrease? If you were in my shoes, would you wait a week or two, or pull the trigger asap (I am not holding you to anything, I realize there are too many factors that can play into each scenario)?

    • Hi Aaron,

Unfortunately since you are traveling during the busy July 4th holiday, you would have wanted to purchase your flights way earlier. Whenever you are traveling during or around a holiday (which are popular times to travel), you’ll want to book earlier than the recommended window. I’d definitely suggest to buy now to avoid the fares from increasing further. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

      • That’s too bad, but understandable for the DC leg.

How about the Buffalo to LA leg mid-July- would you wait on that until later in May, or pull the trigger now as well?

        • Hi Aaron,

I’d suggest booking that flight now or sooner than later because you are looking for 6 seats. Since you are looking for 6 seats, its possible that you might save some money by splitting your search into smaller groups… like 2 seats or 3 seats. Airfares are sold in blocks based on a class of service with the cheapest being shown when searching. If there are only 4 seats left at the lowest class of service and you are searching for 6, then the next available lowest fare with 6 seats available would show up in the search, not those 4 cheaper seats. Definitely let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  96. i’m looking for the best time to purchase tickets for a pittsburgh to san salvador, el salvador flight for early january. what do you recommend and what’s the lowest price such flights might be expected to go?

    • Hi Michelle,

For your flights in January, it is best to book at minimum 80 days prior to your departure, but I suspect you’ll want to book sooner than that depending on your actual dates of travel. Prices for that route can be as low as $630 per person, so I’d suggest to continue to monitor the fares until you find the flights you like at the price you like. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  97. Hi, an interesting article, i live in the UK, i would like to visit Las Vegas in May 2015. When should i book flights for the best price, either from Manchester or London Gatwick..
    thanks allot

    • Hi Matthew,

For international flights to Las Vegas in May 2015, I’d recommend booking sometime at the end of 2014 and into early 2015. I’d be sure to book at least 90 days prior to your departure date. Currently at this time, we are unable to check fares since airlines only release flight schedules 330 days out from the current date, so you’d have to wait till July 2014 to check flights and fares. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  98. What about flights from San Francisco to Sydney in Feb? I’m looking to leave Jan 30 and return Feb 16th, but this is all for next year (2015). I see flights are about $2,000, but if I fly out 2 days later (2/1), it’s under $1500. When would be the best time to book them?

    • Hi Kim,

For your flights to Sydney in Jan/Feb 2015, it would be best to book at minimum 100 days prior to your departure. However, since that is a peak travel season for Australia, it would be better to book earlier than the 100 days. I’d recommend keeping an eye on the fares now onward and purchase if you see the fares drop below $1300. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1mD6AKY Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  99. Hi. I’m planning to go to Hong Kong on August 3 for two weeks before heading to South Korea for study abroad. The report said it was best to book flights to Asia 129 earlier, did I miss the window? Also, would it be cheaper to book 3 one way tickets or 1 three way tickets? Thanks!

    • Hi Wendy,

For flights to Hong Kong in August, you’ll want to book now or as soon as you can. We’re less than 3 months out from your departure so I wouldn’t put off your purchase too much longer. Depending on the routing and your exact dates, separate one-way flights can be cheaper than purchasing a ticket for all flights… but you would have to price them out and compare to see since we do not know your exact dates and routes you are looking for. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  100. I am planning a vacation for my family of 6 to San Juan,Puerto Rico for the end of March 2015. I can check the flights now from SlC- SJU and they are about 600+. Is it too early to book now, would I be better to wait? When is the best time to book a flight thats over Spring Break? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :)
    Thanks

    • Hi Debbie,

For Spring Break flights, it is best to book around December/January. In checking fares for that route, it looks like the lowest fares start at around $425 per person, so I’d aim for something near that price. I’d recommend periodically checking the fares to get a sense of pricing and buy when you find the flights you like at the price you like. You can use this link to view flight schedules and book: http://bit.ly/1njLyR3 Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

      • Thanks for the response back. I am not seeing the flight for 425$. Am I missing something? If there is a flight available for 6 at this price I’d book it right now. The dates we will be going are March 21-29 2015. Please let me know if I can get that price. :) Thanks again.

        • Hi Debbie,

Thank you for providing your dates, that really helps. The $425 was the lowest cost for that route, but not specific to any dates, since we did not know your dates. In checking the fares for your exact dates, flights are starting at around $798 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. Since you are not looking to travel till March 2015, you have plenty of time to monitor the fares more. It’s likely fares will drop down from now till January. Since March is Spring Break season, fares will be higher than at other times during the year. Due to this, I would recommend booking your flights by January 2015. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1nt0idU Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  101. Thanks for the tips!! I am ready to commit and book a trip to Dunedin (through Auckland), New Zealand, departing Portland, OR (PDX) on Tues., Feb. 17, 2015, and returning from Auckland on Tues., March 31, 2015. I have always been of the “earlier is better” philosophy, for the peace of mind knowing that I can then continue to plan the trip. My husband alerted me to your advice, however, which says to book for this destination just 70 days out. I told him I just can’t do that. We are not looking for the cheapest airfare. The shortest duration and most convenient for us are more important, but of course we don’t want to overpay if we don’t have to! Right now I’m seeing the most convenient at about $1,950. Actually, I did book RT Auckland, thinking that I would add on a one-way to Dunedin, then realized that it might be cheaper (and more convenient) to have it all on one itinerary. I have about 8 hours to cancel that (without penalty), then I would book the desired trip. Only I’m not seeing the original flight out of Portland now. Should I just wait?? I know New Zealand is a popular destination, and we’ll be going while they’re still enjoying summer there.

    • Hi Alice,

Since you are looking for the most convenient flights and Dunedin is not a very popular airport destination, booking earlier than normal is probably the best strategy for you. In fact due to that reason, there are only a few flights to choose from. With all that said, booking all your flights together on the same airline ticket will ensure your baggage will transfer to your final destination. If you are purchasing separate one-way flights then you’ll need to claim your luggage and re-check in which would mean you’d need additional time to do so. I’d suggest booking them all together on one ticket.

  102. Planning a trip from Chicago to Manila Philippines Sep 28/29 through Oct 19/20. Most carriers go through Seoul or Hong Kong. Does this route fall under the Asia or South Pacific guidelines? Is now a good time to buy this route? Any chance you know if the seats are selling well or if I still have some time to wait for further drops. Another website thinks current prices may still drop.

    • Hi Timothy,

The Philippines is part of the South Pacific, so you can base it from there. Currently the cheapest fares from Chicago to Manila for those dates are starting at around $1111 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. In viewing the availability, there’s plenty of seats at the lower fares still available across a lot of flights. I’d suggest to keep monitoring the fares a little longer, since it is possible that the fares may drop a little. If they do, be prepared to buy. I’d be sure to book by late June at the latest. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1mGR3tw Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  103. Hey CheapAir,

So my family and I (4 adults) are planning on going to India (Hyderabad) a bit after 12th of December 2014 and it is a long ways away, 7 months. But I was wondering what would be the best time to book our tickets? Right now they are around $1,100 and according to your diagram the best time would be like September, but do you think that’s too late? Thanks in advance!

  104. Oh I forgot to mention I am leaving from Detroit, Michigan. And we are planning to buy 2 roundtrips and 2 one ways. And we don’t really care were we stop and we actually prefer stops.

    • Hi Chandini,

For your flights in December, I would recommend booking at minimum 90 days prior to your departure. While that does mean you should purchase exactly at 90 days prior, I would advise to keep monitoring the fares now onward to get a good sense of the pricing. I’d continue to keep checking the fares each week to see if the prices are increasing, decreasing, or staying the same. If you’re seeing the fares decrease or increase, then I would buy. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  105. We booked a trip to Disney world Nov 9th- Nov 15th 2014. We will be leaving from the Philadelphia Airport. when would be the best time to buy the cheapest airplane tickets?

    • Hi Heather,

Currently, fares from Philadelphia to Orlando are starting at around $292 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. This is actually the lowest fare for that route, so I would suggest buying your flights now or as soon as you can. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1l5696w Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  106. Great article! Two of us are planning a 10 to 14 day (undecided) trip from Chicago to Hong Kong at the end of this year. I anticipate leaving around December 3rd and returning no later than December 17th, to avoid Christmas holiday. I just started looking at prices last night and given your research, we may do better waiting until sometime in July to purchase? Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated and thanks so much!

    • Hi Michael,

You definitely have the right idea avoiding the holidays. Currently, fares from Chicago to Hong Kong for those dates are starting at around $970 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. I’d suggest booking no later than mid-August at the latest. It is recommended to periodically check the fares each week (usually earlier in the week, like Monday, Tuesday) to see if the fares are holding steady, increasing, or decreasing. I’d suggest to find the flights you like and buy them as soon you find them at a price you like. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1iGW8tN Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  107. Great Article! Thanks for sharing! My family of traveling to MCO this November 11th. We are flexible with where we depart from (PHL, EWR, MDT, ABE). I have been monitoring and not seeing much change, but feel that the prices are still a little high. Should I wait for that window to arrive? I am not sure if the popularity of the destination is a factor to make me purchase this early?

    • Hi Kelly,

For your flights in November, you still have a lot of time to keep monitoring the fares more. Currently fares from MDT (Harrisbrug, PA) are the cheapest with fares starting from $213 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. I’d recommend if you’d prefer to depart from Harrisburg that you purchase sometime in the next month or so. Otherwise, for flights from PHL or EWR, you can wait it out more since those are larger airports with more flight options. ABE is the most expensive option. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  108. Hi

I was looking to book a flight to Japan from NY (JFK-NRT) in October 2-9.

I noticed now if i try through Delta or Orbitz the prices are about $200 more than i paid last year.

Ideally i was hoping to leave JFK around 12:30 pm to arrive in japan around 4 and leave japan and arrive back at JFK around 7-8 pm. Sometime similar to what ibdid last year.

When would be best for me to book, August perhaps???

    • Hi Vincent,

Since you’re looking for specific flights it is recommended to book earlier than normal. In checking the fares, it looks like the cheapest non-stop flights close to those flight time are starting at around $1894 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. I’d advise to buy your flights now or as soon as possible to avoid the fares from increasing more. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1sG1WuS Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  109. This is a great article, thanks to you & Jeff! Is the availability of seats on a plane any indicator that it might make sense to wait another week or two? (A few months prior to flying, that is.).

I was about to book a ticket but noticed (at the “seat selection” part of the process) that almost all the economy seats were still available, so I hesitated. They’ve sold no tickets (yet) at the lowest rate (which isn’t very low). Fare-watcher type places recommend buying now as prices are predicted to go up, yet I can see right in front of me that the flights are still under-sold.

    Any thoughts?

    • Hi Jody,

That can be a great indication on how well a flight is selling. While I wouldn’t entirely base your decision on that factor, I would absolutely consider that in your decision on when to buy. I’d be cautious to wait too long though since airlines will begin increasing fares as it gets closer to the date of departure. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  110. Hi

I’m planning on travelling from London to Seattle on 16th July with return flight on 26th July 2014. Prices are currently around £1,100 – £1,200 ($1,800 – $2,000). When would you suggest booking them? About 2 weeks ago I thought I’d see how much prices were for the beginning of June, to get an idea how much prices change closer to the date you are due to fly. At that time they were priced at £730 ($1,200). Today the prices have dropped to £660 ($1,100). Does this then therefore suggest the July prices will drop if I leave purchasing them until a few weeks before flying?

    Thank you

    • Hi Mark,

Not necessarily. For your flights from London to Seattle in July you should book now or sometime soon. From the end of June till the end of August is the summer season in the United States and airfares are generally more expensive during this season. If you can be flexible with your dates or travel, then I would recommend waiting it out more. Otherwise, if you have your dates set then you’re really limited to the flights available on those dates and those prices. Based on how those fares are now, I wouldn’t put your purchase off too much longer. 111. I am going to a wedding near Paris in August, traveling from either JAC or SLC. I have been watching the airfares for a while, and they are always around the same price. This morning I checked, and they were 600-800 cheaper from SLC. I immediately tried to book the flight and by the time I entered all of the info etc. the price had doubled! Very frustrating. Was it a fluke that the price was so much less? Or will that possibly happen again?

    • Hi Barb,

Salt Lake City will definitely be your cheaper option. Fare fluctuations happen all the time. As to that dramatic of a fluctuation, that’s a little odd. What are you dates of travel? While I don’t suspect the fares will drop that much, it is likely they will continue to increase or decrease. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  112. I am planning a trip to Maui (from Sacramento, CA) for the end of March next year. Monday this week there was an available flight at the “lowest” fare and the next day there was not. I have been told by many people to wait until about 3 months before the trip to book but I am afraid of not getting the flights we want (they only offer one flight each way that is non-stop and not involving a lengthy lay-over). This would be during Spring Break season. There are 3 of us flying and we need to use Alaska Air because we have a companion fare for one of us ($99). Should I take people’s advice and wait? If I look at 3 months from now the flights are about 1/3 of the price I am seeing for a little less than a year out.

    • Hi Jennifer,

No. I would definitely recommend booking earlier than advised. Since you’re looking for a specific flight, you’ll actually want to book sooner than later. While I wouldn’t suggest booking now, I would advise to keep monitoring the fares and be ready to buy when you see the flight you want at the price you like. Definitely let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

      • Thanks! I have been monitoring the fares daily and watching for the notices that say only so many seats are left. Hopefully the airfare will drop at some point soon. I am not sure how the “lowest” fare works and why they don’t offer both the non-refundable (lowest) and refundable fares, the same seats show available.

  113. HI,
My family is planning on traveling from Toronto to London, England for a wedding (probably Air Canada or Lufthansa). I know that it is cheaper to fly in the middle of the week so we were planning on booking a ticket for August 18th, 19th, or 20th and returning around 3 weeks later. I was wondering if it would make a huge difference in price if we chose not to fly into Heathrow Airport and chose a smaller one instead or if it would be better to take a straight trip or to take a layover in a different country? How early should we book? With what conditions would we get the best price per ticket?
    Thanks for the info!

    • Hi Sangeethai,

In checking the fares, it looks like departing on August 20th is the cheapest. As for airports, both London and Manchester are coming up similar in costs with most flights connecting in New York City on the outbound and Amsterdam on the return. To check flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1ji0YlS Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  114. Does this apply to Business Class fares too? Or is the market very different for premium cabins?

    • Hi Trey,

No, this does not apply to Business or First class fares. For business and first class fares, you’ll have less fluctuations in the fare. Due to this, you’ll have more time to buy. We sometimes have business and first class specials that are only available by phone. You can call (800) 576-1600 for special assistance. 115. looking to travel to Orlando from NYC area 12/26/14 through 1/3/15.
I have noticed flights already increasing in cost and they were just released by the airlines. Should we wait or book now ?

    • Hi Bmurray,

For your flights from New York to Orlando during the holidays, you’ll want to purchase now or as soon as possible. Airfares during holidays are always higher than usual and will only continue to get more expensive the closer we get to the holiday. 116. Hi,

I was planning for a vacation to India sometime from July second week to August second week. Until now, the flight ticket (Emirates) rates were $1900 and yesterday the prices have up suddenly to $2350. Do you suggest to wait or go ahead and book the tickets now? Thanks.

    • Hi Rocky,

For your flights in July/August, you’ll want to purchase now or as soon as you can. It is always best to book international flights well in advance, at least 3 months if possible. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  117. When would the best time (best pricing) to fly roundtrip ROC -> PUJ / PUJ -> ROC. Planning a trip March 21 – 31, 2015?

    • Hi Monica,

For your flight in March 2015, you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the fares. Currently fares for those dates are starting at around $511 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. Fares can go as low as $475 per person To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/TmQWql Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  118. I would like to take a trip from Orlando to Jamaica this Christmas through New Year’s Day with my significant other. Flights are pretty reasonable now, but, I’m concerned they may dip a little more in price later in the year. Should I just book now or wait until 101 days out?

    • Hi Octavia,

For flights during or around the holidays, you should always book earlier than later. In fact, I would suggest to buy your flights now or sooner than later. Since the holidays are an extremely popular time to travel, fares are always high during this time and will only continue to increase as we get closer to the season. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1j5GdoT Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  119. Hello, planning a trip from DCA to KOA in mid November. Right now our tentative dates are Nov. 7-15, but can be somewhat flexible within 3-4 days either way (must be back in DC by Nov. 20th) I am monitoring ticket prices now to have some kind of pricing baseline for comparison. Two passengers flying first class, best price I’ve found now is about $3900 total. We will be paying full fare (no travel miles, etc.).

Based on the info I read in the above article. I was planning to purchase tix on or about September 8th hoping to snag lower fares.

Does this sound like a good plan? I’m open to any advice.

    Thanks for your help!

    • Hi Joe,

For your flights, it looks like the cheapest first class fares would be from November 7 – 15. Currently, we’re finding first class fares starting at around $1880 per person for those dates. Depending on if you have specific flight times you’re looking for, I’d recommend to purchase your flights sometime within the next few months. I’d be sure to book by September at the latest. Since you’re looking for first class seats, you do have more time than if searching for economy seats since economy seats sell more often than first class seats. We sometimes have business and first class specials that are only available by phone. You can call (800) 576-1600 for special assistance. Please let us know if you have any questions or need any assistance with finding flights.

  120. I am needing to fly my family of 4 from SLC to LA for a Disney trip on Sept 20, returning Sept 26. I’ve been looking at all the LA area airports, LAX, SNA, LGB, and BUR. When I started my search over a month ago, the prices were a little over $200 per person. They’ve slowly gone down to where they are now $158. I’m told by friends to keep waiting a little longer. How long should I wait?

    • Hi Wes,

Currently the $158 price is the lowest you’ll see for that route, so I would recommend to buy now if possible. I wouldn’t put off your purchase too much longer, especially since the fares are at their lowest right now. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  121. I am looking to book a trip to Cancun from GRR from Dec 11-16th 2014. I am going to be photographing a wedding and charged by client $1000 for flight/hotel because last September when they booked me, packages were consistently around $800. Now they are around $1200-1400. Should I wait another 2 months to book and hope it goes down around $200-300/person (I’m paying for my husband to come) or book when I see the price come down at all. I know this is a hotel/flight combo but I’m assuming the flight has a large impact on the price. Thank you for your help. Gen

    • Hi Vieve33,

Currently, fares from Grand Rapids to Cancun for your dates in December are starting at around $500 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. The cheapest fares for this route start at around $460 per person, so $500 is a great price. I’d actually suggest to book your flights sooner than later due to this reason. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1meU9Sf Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  122. Hi,

Planning a trip for a family of 4 … traveling from PVD to SJU December 22-31. When is too early to book? Do I wait until 101 days before?

    Thanks so much,
    Kim

  123. PS – I’m finding flights in the $387 – $447 range to be the lowest. I’m wondering if you think they’ll go even lower between now and September. thanks!

    • Hi Kim,

Since you are looking for flights during the peak holiday season, you’ll actually want to book now or as soon as possibly. It’s not likely that fares during the holiday season will decrease in price. If anything, they will steadily continue to increase due to the popularity for travel during the holidays. 124. Will do. Thank you!

  125. Hi!

I would like to book a one-way flight from Tokyo to NYC for my husband and I in mid-January. When would you recommend that we purchase our tickets?

    Thanks!!!

    • Hi Jessica,

Currently the fares for one-way flights from Tokyo to NYC in mid-January are starting at around $965 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. I’d recommend booking your flights sooner than later since you’re traveling internationally. I’d definitely make sure to book at least 100+ days prior to your departure in mid-January. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1lJ0eTO Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  126. Hello – I am looking to book two one-way fares from LAX -> DTW on 09/12 to meet up with a connecting flight to CDG on the 13th. We plan on getting a room in Detroit to rest up for the long haul.
Since we don’t have a lot of flexibility, if any, would this be a situation where booking early would be a good idea? I found a pretty ok route for $404 total – of course I would love to pay less, but I don’t want to gamble!
    Any thoughts would be appreciated!

    • Hi Jaime,

Based on your trip, I would definitely recommend to purchase your flights sooner than later. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1vU1bRD Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  127. Taking group of 5 to England from SLC beginning of April 2015 for 2 weeks. Hoping to get fares at $1000 or less. Realistic? Recommendations on where to fly into? It looks like Manchester is currently cheaper than London, but both a $300 more than the $1000 I’d love to see. Should I purchase sooner than 5 months from departure?

    • Hi Rebecca,

Unfortunately the cheapest fares from Salt Lake City to England start at around $1190 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. Since you’re looking for 5 seats, I’d suggest booking sooner than later. I’d definitely recommend booking sooner than 5 months prior to your departure in April 2015. As to where to fly into, both Manchester and London are about the same costs. Since you sound flexible with your dates of travel, I’d suggest using our MapSearch which will allow you to enter your home airport: Salt Lake City and see a map of destinations and fares. If you scroll over England and click on either the London or Manchester fare, you’ll be shown a calendar of airfares. You can use this link: http://bit.ly/1fU7Hwm to search. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  128. Hi,
I am looking to book the flight some where in December 2nd week 2014 and return in Jan 2nd week for LAX to Hyderabad India.I see the minimum fare for round trip as 1500$.
Is there any possibiity that it would go below this or it would be increease.

    Would appreciate any suggestions!!

    • Hi Mahesh,

Fares for your dates are very high right now compared to other dates in January. Based on this, I’d suggest to continue to monitor the fares a little more to see if they drop any. I’d be prepared to buy if you see them drop. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1lPku6f Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  129. We’re looking to go to Ocho Rios for our honeymoon in late September early October would it be beneficial to wait the 101 days or get our tickets as soon as possible?

    • Hi TKing,

That can depend on where you are departing from. For example, if you are departing from a smaller city airport with less flights then I’d definitely suggest to book sooner than later. Otherwise, if you’re traveling from a larger airport with more flight options and you are flexible with the flight times then you can wait it out a little more. Being that this is for your honeymoon though, you may want to book a little sooner than normal to ensure you get what you want. Definitely let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

      • We’re booking from Atlanta, so would that be a big enough market to wait a little longer?

        • Hi TKing,

Atlanta is a big market, so generally speaking yes. I would however take into consideration the days you are planning to travel on. For example, if you depart on a Friday vs a Thursday, the fares can be more expensive because flying Friday – Sunday is extremely popular versus flying on a Thursday or Tuesday. So if you are planning on departing on a Friday or Sunday, I’d recommend purchasing sooner than later since those days will be more popular and therefore cost more. If you are able to be a little flexible with the dates and depart during the week day then you can wait it out more. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/SZJ2CI Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  130. Thanks a lot for this awesome info! From Canada to Jamaica, I know the recommended time is 101 days prior to, but what if we want to fly during Easter weekend? Should we book 21 weeks before instead of only 101 days?

    • Hi Mojo,

You’ve got the right idea when it comes to booking earlier. Since you’re looking to travel during the Easter weekend, you’ll want to book earlier then normal. I’d suggest to continue to monitor the fares starting now onward and book when you find the flights you like at the price you like. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  131. Hi! I’m looking at plane tickets from Kansas City to Guadalajara,Mexico and the the time I’m planning on staying there is from the 25th till the ending of February or beginning march. Right now their at $634.75 should I wait a little longer or buy now?

    • Hi Annie,

I’d recommend to book now or sooner than later, especially if you are departing next month. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1k1CFKv Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

      • sorry I meant the 25th of December of this year till February or March or 2015

        • Hi Annie,

Thanks for clarifying that. Since you’re looking to depart on Christmas, you’ll want to book sooner than later since the holidays are a peak time for flying, so booking earlier than later is best. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  132. Hello ,
Great info. looking for 2 from BGM TO MBJ on april 21 2015. And 2 from JFK OR EWR same time frame. dates are firm as hotel us already booked. Returning 4/30 and 4/28 respectively

    • Hi Lorraine,

Generally speaking for your flights, I’d recommend booking at least 90 days prior to your departure in April. Unfortunately we are unable to check fares that far out yet. Airlines only release flight schedules and fares 330 days out from the current date, so we’d have to wait another week or two just to see the fares. Please check back with us in a couple of weeks and comment and we’d be happy to help you once the fares are available.

  133. booking to aruba in jan/feb. any advice as to when is best time to book?

    • Hi Mary,

January/February are part of the “high season” for Aruba. This means that prices will be higher since its the more popular time to travel to the island. With that said, I would recommend booking at least 90 days prior to your departure. I’d recommend to check the fares periodically to get a sense of the pricing and book when you find the flights you like at the price you like. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  134. My wife, daughter and son-in-law are planning a trip to Ireland leaving July 19, 2014 and are trying to determine the best time to book plane tickets. I appreciate any help you can provide for 4 adult tickets to Dublin returning August 3rd back to Boise.

    • Hi Mike,

You should book your flights now or as soon as possible. Since you’re looking to travel internationally within 2 months, it would be wise to book now. In fact, you probably would have wanted to book the flights a month or more ago for the best savings. Especially since you’re flying from a smaller airport like Boise. Currently the fares for your dates are starting at around $1625 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1kqxm6a Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  135. Thanks for compiling this research and offering these very useful travel tips. We require a return flight to LAX from Tokyo next April 2015. I’ve been monitoring a few flights via Philippine Airlines that are around $580 and they suddenly jumped about $50 over the weekend. Should I hop on the comparably low fare now (other airlines are listing $900 and up) or wait until the optimal purchase period? (Not sure if I can expect it to climb steadily or jump around a bit. There seem to be plenty of open seats on about three flight option on our travel date.)

    • Hi MJ,

If you’re finding flights for about $650 then I would recommend to buy them now. That’s a really low fare for LAX to Tokyo. Fares generally are around $900 mark, so anything below that would be a great deal. You can use this link to search for flights: http://bit.ly/1u9H141 Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  136. Hi! I would be flying to Mumbai, India from Hamburg, Germany in second week of September and its a 20 days round journey. What would be the best time to book a flight?
    Thanks already!

    • Hi Saurabh,

For your flights from Hamburg to Mumbai in September, I would recommend to purchase sooner than later. Currently fares are starting at around $668 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. 137. Hi…I need to purchase a ticket to Chennai, India from Rochester, NY in December third week…and return after a month’s stay. What would be the best time to to book a flight?

    • Hi Anita,

For your flights in December, it would be best to book sooner than later since flights around the holiday season in December can get expensive and the more you wait the more expensive those flights can be. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1obqfjo Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  138. Hi,

I’m looking to leave on August 16th from Toronto, Canada to Korea till August 21, then August 21st from korea to Indonesia for a wedding and hoping to stay till sept 1st at which point I’ll return directly back home. I’ve been monitoring the prices and they seem to be increasing, should I keep waiting or purchase now?

    Thank you.

    • Hi Tina,

You should definitely purchase now or as soon as possible. Since you’re traveling internationally and in about two and a half months you’ll want to book as soon as you can to avoid the fares from increasing any further. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://www.cheapair.com/air/ Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  139. I am looking to book a flight from Newark, NJ to Orlando, FL the first week of September. How soon should I book my flight? I’m not sure if this is typically a busy season or not.

    Thank you.

    • Hi Sharon! It would probably be a good idea to book sooner than later because of the holiday. Do you have any flexibility in your dates? September 1st is Labor Day so in theory the prices should be lower for the rest of the week. In reality, there are probably people who will extend their trips based on Labor Day being a bit early this year. Prices from Newark to Orlando look pretty consistent for the week and we don’t expect flight rates to get much lower. In any event, if you book with us and prices do go down, we have the “Price Drop Payback” feature. The PDP will return up to $100 to you per ticket should the price of the purchased ticket drop below what you paid. It’s a nice bit of insurance for our customers. Check out this link to see our best prices now: http://bit.ly/1knJzEj.

  140. I’m planning to fly to India (Bangalore) during mid of Aug (around 15th). Prices have been steadily increasing for the past two weeks. From your last year’s data, do you think the prices would drop before increasing again?

    Thanks,
    Russell

    • Hi Russell, I don’t think you can count on it. You’re well within the 129 days we suggest for Asian flights (see our article here with the key data https://www.cheapair.com/blog/travel-tips/when-to-ignore-our-advice-and-book-your-flight-as-early-as-possible/). We’d have to take a look at your departure city and return dates to really drill down, but you’re really just probably better off purchasing now. If you buy with us, we have something called our “Price Drop Payback” feature. The PDP will return up to $100 to you per ticket should the price of the purchased ticket drop below what you paid. It’s a nice bit of peace of mind. Hope this helps!

  141. My departure city is San Francisco and trip duration is about 8-10days.
    PDP sounds interesting.

    Russell.

    • Hi Russell,

In checking the fares from San Francisco to Bangalore, India we’re finding flights starting at around $1651 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. I would definitely recommend to buy now to avoid the fares from increasing any further. You can use this link: http://bit.ly/1luQ8Kj to view flight schedules and book. 142. Hi, last year I was looking to buy airfare to Frankfurt, Germany from Salt Lake City, Utah and was finding them for $900. That was in September of 2013. This year I have been looking again because I want to take my parents to Germany, and I have been looking consistently for about 4 months and have seen them average about $1280. About a month ago they did drop down to $1120 and I almost bought them, but decided to wait. They have not dropped again. I am wondering if I should wait any longer, or if I should just buy now before they go up any further. I’m kind of kicking myself that I didn’t buy at $1120, but I just thought they would go down by June like they did last year. What do you think? Also, where is the best place to fly into in France?

  143. Great article! Do you have any localized data for trips from Seattle to India (specifically Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata)? It seems like flights to Delhi are cheapest. Does the 129 day rule for Asia still apply? Thanks in advance for your insight and help!

    • Hi Abhi, Yes, in general, the 129 window is a good guide to follow. We always advise folks that these are general guidelines rather than hard and fast rules – if there is one thing we know, in travel there are always exceptions to the rule. From Seattle, you are correct – it does look like New Delhi has the best fares. We would need to know the travel dates to get a more accurate price put together, but when searching in October there is a range from $1000-1200 depending on the day of the week and the return date. Try this link to start a few general searches: http://bit.ly/1q4UDfk. Let us know when you have narrowed down your dates or if you have any additional questions!

  144. Ok sorry, last question! It is Friday night and tickets from SLC Utah to Frankfurt Germany for October 13th to October the 27th round trip are cheaper than I’ve seen them in the past two months, at 1081. Normally my experience is that they are cheaper mid week. Should I wait till next Monday or Tuesday to see if they drop, or should I buy them now? Thanks! you guys rock

    • Hi James, Sorry for the delay. If you haven’t yet purchased I do see that the flights have gone down again slightly since Friday. I’m not sure you will see the $900 price tag again but $1050 (what I’m seeing) is pretty good (and there are no better dates to travel in October, currently. There are a few other dates at that same price, but nothing less. Keep in mind, if you purchase with us, we have something called our “Price Drop Payback” feature. The PDP will return up to $100 to you per ticket should the price of the purchased ticket drop below what you paid. It’s a nice bit of peace of mind. Here’s a link to help you with your search. http://bit.ly/1i26k6b. Hope this helps!

  145. Hi, great post. My wife and I have been scanning your site recently for a trip to Miami from New York for April 1 to April 11 2015. The price has been rising. Should we wait it out? Our flight times are not that limited just needs to be after 2pm…we really don’t want to pay 500+ to fly nonstop to Florida or worse yet not go due to this. Last year we waited and getting 300ish ticket price but this is no guarantee.

    • Hi Mike, Quite honestly it’s a bit early to buy. It’s tricky for me to get too detailed at the moment (without knowing your flexibility from NYC airports into Miami or Fort Lauderdale). For example, I see a flight from EWR to FLL with United for about $320 nonstop. That’s not quite $300 but it’s better than the $500 you mentioned. But it means leaving from alternative airports. I would probably sign up for an airfare watchdog alert (www.airfarewatchdog.com) and monitor for a bit. When you decide to purchase if you buy with us, we have something called our “Price Drop Payback” feature. The PDP will return up to $100 to you per ticket should the price of the purchased ticket drop below what you paid. It’s a nice bit of peace of mind. Here’s a link to help you with your search. http://bit.ly/1iBXIhD. Hope this helps!

  146. I am planning to fly (August 7th to the 12th) from Boston Logan Airport to LAX. I’ve been searching for about 2 months for the lowest fares, and while I would prefer to go with an airline I’ve been on before, reasonable flight times, and the dates that I want, price is definitely an issue and I am not willing to pay more for nonstop/direct flights on the airline that I prefer on the exact dates and times I want. So I wanted to get your advice. Is it too late to get the best deals for August travel (for the dates that I am aiming for, I’m going to a convention 9th-10th so I can’t fly any later than the 8th or return any sooner than the 11th). Any advice would be appreciated. The lowest I’ve seen is $414 but I hope I can find for under $400 exactly just to allow for more spending for the rest of my trip. Thank you!

    • Hi Asia, I think for the dates you are looking for you are seeing the best fares. With airfares, the more restricted your details, the more difficult is is going to be to get you a bargain. If you search here, you can see that the rates we offer fall right in line with what you are finding for your dates: http://bit.ly/1nk1q29. I wouldn’t wait much longer before you purchase, we are getting close to travel dates and you’re likely to see them trend upwards rather than go down much if at all. If you purchase through CheapAir, we have something called our “Price Drop Payback” feature. The PDP will return up to $100 to you per ticket should the price of the purchased ticket drop below what you paid. It’s a nice bit of insurance for our customers. Hope this helps!

      • Thank you! That was very helpful. So how does the price drop benefit work? Does the website automatically reimburse me if fares drop, or do I request it if I find lower fares after purchasing?

  147. Hi,
I and my boyfriend wanna take a vacation to Hawaii from Aug 19 -24. I just wonder should i book the ticket now before 2 months or waiting until next week that means 54 days in advance.
    Thank you

    • Hi Vivian, Thanks for reaching out. The 54 day rule should really be used more as a guideline rather than a rule. I don’t think it is too early to book this week, especially if you see some reasonable fares. Also, if you book with CheapAir, we have the “Price Drop Payback” feature. Should you find the price of your tickets drops post purchase, we will refund you the change in price up to $100 per ticket. Hope this helps!

  148. Hi,
    Thanks for the article!
Trying to get a cheap flight from a Chicago airport to New Orleans, flying in Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014 and flying out afternoon/evening of Friday, Sept. 19, 2014. Does the 54 day guideline apply?
    Thanks!

    • Hi Mary, At the moment I am seeing lots of options out of Midway and O’Hare that come in at less than $300. I’m glad you used the word “guideline” because that it is just that – not a rule per se. I think the price is likely to go up rather than down so if you’re comfortable with the prices you;re seeing, I would probably book sooner rather than later. Also, if you do book with CheapAir, we have the “Price Drop Payback” feature. Should you find the price of your tickets drops post purchase, we will refund you the change in price up to $100 per ticket. Hope this helps!

  149. Hi, We are planning to buy a ticket fom Chennai to DC for following dates:

chennai to DC : August 1st week
DC to Chennai : Jan 2015, 1st week

When would you suggest we buy tickets for best fare

    • Hi Lakshmi, we would suggest purchasing sooner rather than later. Your flights are only about 5 weeks away and it is not likely that the rates will come down. It’s much more likely that they will go up. It seems that flights on the following Tuesday (August 12) are around $300 cheaper at the moment, so if you had some flexibility with dates I would suggest the following week. Also, I’m not sure how many tickets you need. This will also affect the cost of your trip – the airlines have a limited number of seats available at any given fare. You can only get the best rates with a small number of seats. If you do book with CheapAir, we have the “Price Drop Payback” feature. Should you find the price of your tickets drops post purchase, we will refund you the change in price up to $100 per ticket. Hope this helps!

  150. Hi, I am planning to travel from Philadelphia to Barranquilla, Colombia for following dates:

    December 12, 2014 to January 5 or 6, 2015

When would you suggest to buy I the ticket for best fare?

    • Hi Ronald! In theory, you should be able to book just over two months out to get the best rates. However, your travel dates take in the holiday season and for that reason I would advise you to book before the end of summer. If you are planning to wait and see if fares fall, I would focus on the return date of January 6. Tuesdays are often cheaper dates to fly and when I look at the dates overall, the rates that are coming back seem to suggest this would be the better day to return to get the best rate. If you were able to leave on the 8th of December, the flights look a bit less expensive. In any event, if you see a good rate I would snap it up sooner rather than later. If you book with CheapAir, we have the “Price Drop Payback” feature. Should you find the price of your tickets drops post purchase, we will refund you the change in price up to $100 per ticket. Hope this helps!

  151. Hello,

I have to book flight ticket from MAA (Chennai) or BLR (Bangalore) to CMH (Port Columbus, Ohio) in the first or second week of August 2014 for my studies. It is a one-way trip and the prices show a minimum of 70000 INR as of now. Am flexible with the dates. Can you help me by telling whether there will be further price drops or I should go ahead with the booking !! Am in a dilemma about this. Thanks in advance..

    • Hello Sathya, At the moment it looks as though the flights out of Bangalore are slightly less expensive (around $1100 for the week we are discussing). So your calculations seem right on point. I wouldn’t wait longer to buy. This close to travel, I believe you will see the prices getting higher, not lower. Follow this link to try different dates: http://bit.ly/1nCcZAt. Also keep in mind if you book with CheapAir, we have the “Price Drop Payback” feature. Should you find the price of your tickets drops post purchase, we will refund you the change in price up to $100 per ticket. Hope this helps!

      • Will there be a possibility of further reduction in price ??? Anytime around tomorrow or day after tomorrow ?? Will that make a difference (be it increase or decrease) or will it remain the same ?

        • Hi Sathya, It’s hard to say definitively. I would just book as soon as you can. Sometimes the airlines make price adjustments earlier in the week, but due to a limited number of seats at any class of service/price point, I would secure your ticket as soon as you are able. Certainly within the week if you can afford to do so. It is unlikely that the price will go down much (if at all) this close to travel. It is much more likely to go up, and sometimes the prices will make quite a jump.

  152. Hello,

I am looking at traveling to NRT from VPS on 1 November then from NRT to ICN from NRT on the 4th then back to VPS from ICN on the 21st would the 129 day rule still apply for multiple city stops?

    • Hi Jerome, 129 days is more of a guideline than a rule but yes, you can apply this to multiple city stops. You’re right about at the prime booking time for these tickets. I wouldn’t wait too much longer. If you book with CheapAir, we have the “Price Drop Payback” feature. Should you find the price of your tickets drops post purchase, we willrefund you the change in price up to $100 per ticket. Hope this helps!

  153. Hi There!
My fiancé and I are going to Dubai for NYE and we will be flying out of Dallas. It says to book flights to the Middle East about 80 days in advance (based on the map you posted), but I’m wondering if we should book earlier since that is a very popular holiday in which people visit Dubai. Also, we are curious as to what prices to expect? We were hoping to spend no more than $1000 per flight, but I haven’t seen any for less than $1400 RT. Is this a reasonable expectation if we leave for Dubai on Dec 28 and return to Dallas Jan 3? Thanks so much for your help!

    • Hi Tamika, Thanks for reaching out to us. And yes- all of your assumptions are correct! That 80 day guideline is a good rule of thumb/estimate, but when you’re talking about booking during the holiday season coupled with the fact that NYE is a very popular holiday and Dubai is a very popular destination for that holiday, you’re not likely to find any real bargains. In this instance, I would book sooner rather than later, to be honest. It looks like you might be able to save right around $100 a ticket if you were to book your outbound flight a day earlier or later, but I think to find something around $1K for NYE might be a bit of a pipe dream. It’s certainly not worth waiting to see if they will drop. Our professional advice is to buy sooner rather than later. The prices will surely go up – likely by quite a bit. If you book with CheapAir, we have the “Price Drop Payback” feature. Should you find the price of your tickets drops post purchase, we will refund you the change in price up to $100 per ticket. That’s a nice bit of insurance for our customers. Hope this helps!

  154. Hi there,

Our group (11 of us) are traveling from PDX-MBJ 6-14 May 2015 and I would like to know when the best time to book flights would be for the best price and also, how do I book all 11 at the same time so that I can ensure we are on the same flight? We would like to fly red-eye on the 6th so that we arrive mid morning on the 7th in Montego Bay

Thank you so much for your help

    • Hi Lyn, Wow! You’ve got a lot in there! Ok here is the thing. I would price out the ticket as a group ticket direct with the airline BUT (and this is a big but), you can often get the better price by booking individual tickets. Our CEO just did a story that explains why with Inc. magazine. (http://www.inc.com/kimberly-weisul/the-one-simple-strategy-save-money-airfare.html) The number of passengers on your trip, coupled with the fact that the airlines tend to price out their seats in smaller groupings (up to 10 per fare is pretty standard) might make getting rock bottom prices a bit of a challenge. If you are the group’s designated “agent” I would probably price out the whole trip as a group when you find the flight you want and then price it out individually to compare. Without your return dates it’s hard for me to accurately identify a “good price” for you. Also, it is actually pretty early to book to get the best price. If you were only booking 2 or 3 tickets, I’d advise you to wait a bit. Because you need a decent number of tickets however and you want specific flights, I would really start monitoring now. Let us know how it goes! If you decide to book with us, we can help you through the process a bit more to make sure you get the best deal.

  155. Thank you, Our travel dates from PDX are the 6th of May and from Montego Bay back to PDX is the 14th of May

    • Hi Lyn, When I plug in one passenger, I get a rate of around $800 in our system. When I try to book 9 I get a rate of $1000 per ticket which would indicate there are less than 9 tickets available at the lowest fare today. It would seem that booking individual tickets in this case is going to shave quite a bit off the price. It’s obviously up to you when you book and weigh the factors that are most important. Is it most important to you that you all get on the same flight? Then you can probably book up to a certain number at the same fare individually and ask the entire group to share in the cost for the more expensive seats. Once you are on the plane, the reality is that the seats are likely to be in the same class of service. It is not a matter of some of you getting to fly at a premium. That could happen if you wait to purchase until those premium seats are what is mostly left on the plane (extra leg room, etc). I would narrow down a flight and then call the airline direct and ask about group pricing. If they don’t offer you something reasonable based on what you know is available, book them individually. Let us know if you have any other questions. In your situation, I would book sooner if you can.

    • Also keep in mind if you book with CheapAir, we have the “Price Drop Payback” feature. Should you find the price of your tickets drops post purchase, we will refund you the change in price up to $100 per ticket. Hope this helps!

  156. Hello. Booking a cruise for two in November out of Miami. Coming from LIT. Seeing it is cheaper to fly into FLL. Flights look to be at $335(FLL)and $500(Mia). Wondering if this location merits booking now than waiting until the prime window?

    Thank you so much!

    • Hi Lindsey. I’m not sure when exactly in November you’re traveling. If it is Thanksgiving week, book now! People are generally focused on summer travel right now and this is really when you are going to get the best fares from the airlines. If your dates are not overlapping with Thanksgiving week, you probably have a little time to watch the fares and see if they go down a bit. Hope this helps.

  157. Thanks so much. Yes, I should have clarified: Nov. 16 – 21. Week before. If that changes your response. I appreciate your help!

    • Hi Lindsey, I’d probably set up a couple of alerts with airfare watchdog. You have a bit of wiggle room if you wanted to watch and wait for a bit (a few weeks).

  158. Taking my daughter and I to Cabo San Lucas for our Birthdays in Mid December. When should I buy flight and hotel tickets. Thank you.

    • Hi Josie, About three months out is a good guideline for you to use. I would probably start researching now if you have some flexibility in your dates or can avoid busy days of the week to travel. Thursdays and Sundays are more expensive days to travel, typically. Hope this helps!

  159. Wow, personalized advice! What a great service. Can you help me and my husband? We have been doing our own research and are only getting more confused. We want to fly from Germany to Lima, Peru, in late March with our daughter. The prices seem all over the place. When we called the airline directly, the price was about 300€ more (each), which is a lot, but I don’t have the patience to sift through all the fine print and details regarding extra fees. What do you suggest? Book now for March 2015 or wait a little? And when we book, do it directly or use a discounter? Thanks in advance!

    • Hello! It is a bit early to book a flight from Germany to Peru which may be why you’re seeing prices all over the place. It’s a little difficult for me to speculate why the direct prices with the airline are more without knowing which airline we’re discussing. A simple tip to nab the best fare: fly on weekdays like Tuesday and Wednesday if you can and avoid Thursdays and Sundays. Tuesday and Wednesdays are usually going to have better prices. I would set a few alerts to watch the fares and if you see the prices going down, you might want to buy. I think it should be safe until fall to purchase (maybe October?) Of course, these are all guidelines. Your best bet is to be an advocate for yourself and do a bit of research before purchasing (I do wish there was an easier way). If you book with us, we have the “Price Drop Payback” feature. Should you find the price of your tickets drops post purchase, we will refund you the change in price up to $100 (US) per ticket. Hope this helps!

  160. If I am traveling to Miami from DesMoines Iowa in March, when would be the best time to buy?

    • Hi Lisa, That’s a bit of a loaded question with no quick and easy answer and here is why: March is busy for Miami since all of the places in the states with colder climates (especially on the east coast) use Miami to escape the snow. Add to that the fact that Miami is a high-end destination for spring breakers and it all leads to a “wait and see” response from me. I would plan to monitor the fares (maybe set a few alerts with a service like airfarewatchdog.com) and make a decision by the end of summer or early fall. You could probably push a decision to early November, but if you see some good fares sooner, snap them up.

  161. Hey*
I read through almost all the posts! Really so helpfull.
I wondered if you can maybe give me advice? I am looking for flights for my parents from Cape Town (South Africa) to Incheon Airport (South Korea) for any date from September 30th, to October 12th. It is still a while, but in the past week the prices increased kind of a lot from what it was 2weeks ago. So now the big question……..should i just wait for it to maybe decrease a little more…..or should i just buy it now before it increases even more!! :) thanx

    • Hi Ithea,

Based on what you’re seeing with the fares increasing, I would recommend to book sooner than later. Since your parents will be traveling internationally, you’ll want to book well in advance versus waiting it out to see if the fares drop. To view flights and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1k85PTu Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  162. Great Posting!

Here’s a question. I go to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in the beginning of January every year. Usually book about 3 months in advance but start to check flights just about now. The convention is now the largest in Las Vegas. Last year they had 170,000 attendees. Prices for airfare is off the charts at the moment, and understandably so. I’m wondering if the prices will remain high because we’ve reached the limit on how many flights can actually come and go from Las Vegas during the start of the show, Jan 5 to the end Jan 9. Your comments would be most helpful.

    Larry

    • Hi Larry,

Based on the fact that there’s a large convention and everyone will be heading to Vegas for that week, I’d definitely recommend to buy sooner than later. Just like with the holidays or a peak season for a destination, any uptick in travel to a destination would warrant you booking earlier than usual. I’d suggest to continue to monitor the fares a little longer and be ready to buy if the fares drop. Remember, when you book with CheapAir.com you can automatically take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  163. Hi there, My friends and I are doing a multi city tour in Europe during September to October. And so I was wondering when is the best time to get our last ticket from Edinburgh, UK to Toronto for oct 7, 2014?

    • Hi Roxy,

Currently fares from Edinburgh to Toronto on October 7 are starting from around $860 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. Since you’re departing internationally, you’ll want to book earlier than normal. I’d recommend booking your flights sooner than later to avoid the fares from increasing which they will as it gets closer to your departure date. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1opd1Pn Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  164. I looked at rates from Charlotte to St. Thomas last night and they started at $400 and now this morning they are starting at almost $150 higher per ticket for a trip we are taking at the end of September. Is it common for prices to change so drastically overnight? Would the upcoming 4th of July weekend have something to do with it?

    • Hi Barbara,

It’s actually quite common for airfares to fluctuate like that. In fact, we wrote an article about airfare fluctuations which you can read here: http://bit.ly/1fXXljh Since you have specific dates you’re looking to travel on, I would recommend that you book sooner than later to avoid the fares possibly increasing any further. Keep in mind that when booking on CheapAir.com, you can automatically take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  165. Hi there. I’m planning on flying to Istanbul, Turkey from London, England on November 16th 2014 (in the morning) Be there around 12pm in the afternoon and return the next day. When is the best time to book a cheapest return flight? Thank you!

    • Hi Aylina,

Currently fares from London to Istanbul for your dates are starting at around $335 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. I’d recommend booking sooner than later since the fares are close to their lowest for that route and the pricing will only get more expensive the closer it gets to your departure date. I’d be sure to book at least a couple months prior at the latest. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1qcKSuP Please let us know if you need any help or assistance with finding flights.

  166. Please be patient as we have only flown once before in our entire lives.
We are cruising out of Barcelona in early May, 2015, and have the option of fling round trip out of JFK, or, out of Pearson in Toronto.

If we fly out of JFK, Delta has a great non-stop round trip on an Airbus 330-300 aircraft both ways. Delta also has Economy Comfort upgraded seating we can purchase.

If we fly out of Toronto, there are NO non stop flights. Whatever airline we choose such as BA, Luftansa, or, Air France, all have 1-stop over in either London, Paris, or, Amsterdam. The aircraft options depending upon airline are a 747-400, 787-800, or Airbus 380-800. The price out of Toronto is also about $600 less in total for the two of us.

The questions I’m driving myself crazy over, are because I have severe back issues, and I’m trying to choose an airline/aircraft that has the most comfortable seats and leg room so I can stretch as much as possible. We cannot afford Business or First Class.

1…do we choose the Delta non stop and upgrade to Economy Comfort? And, is that Airbus 333-300 in Economy Comfort good enough for my back concern.

2…do we fly out of Toronto even though there is one stop because the 747, 787-800 or Airbus-380-800 will have more comfortable seats and leg room since two of those three planes are newer?

Thank-you very much for your time and help.

    • Hi Dave,

Those are some great questions. Sorry to hear about your back issues. You’ve really done your research having only flown once before. In reviewing those aircraft types and routes, the Delta Airbus 333-300 has a seat pitch of 35″ and is 18″ wide which is about 3″ more than the other seats and approximate .5 to 1″ wider too. The flight time for the Delta flight is also about half the time depending on your exact flights and routing. So based on those factors I’d lean towards the Delta flights, but it really is up to you whether you feel its worth the cost for the extra leg room and reduced flight time. Please let us know if have any questions or need any help with finding flights. I’d recommend speaking to one of our Travel Advisors at 1-800-243-2724 who can assist you with the special seating needs.

  167. I was wondering if airlines are raising flight prices across the board over this 4th of July holiday weekend thinking people will be likely to be looking for flights. I’m curious because I’ve been watching a flight from CID to Montego Bay in November and it’s been consistent for awhile and now all of a sudden I noticed that ALL fights ALL dates are up. Will these prices be likely to go back down during this coming week now that the holiday weekend is over?

    • Hi Laura,

There’s a lot of factors that go into the costs of an airline ticket. Sadly airfares fluctuate in cost all the time. You can read our blog post about airfare fluctuations here: http://bit.ly/1fXXljh Airlines regulate when to increase the fares and when to decrease them based on the demand and performance of a route. While I wouldn’t say that the July 4th holiday was the reason the fares increased, it is more likely that the route you’re monitoring has reached an advance purchase timeline and fares were set to increase. Being that we are now 4 months away from November, flying from a smaller airport (versus New York or Atlanta), and traveling internationally, fares are going to increase and are likely to only continue to increase. I’d personally recommend buying your flights sooner than later. You can use this link http://bit.ly/1jidVOT and plug in your dates to view flight schedules and book. Please let us know if you have any questions.

  168. I am going from Boston, MA to Sydney, Aus in February, when is the best time to book?

    • Hi Jaime,

Depending on your if you’re flexible with your travel dates or not, the end of February is cheaper. With that said, since our winter season is their summer season, I’d suggest booking sooner than later. While you do still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the fares more, I’d just be mindful that the more specific you are with your dates, flight times, etc… the more expensive it will cost. To view flight schedules you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1oeRt5e Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights. Keep in mind that when you book on CheapAir.com, you can automatically take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket too!

  169. Love this blog! We will be traveling to Alaska (GRR-STK, ANC-GRR) leaving July 15, 2015 and returning July 30, 2015. When would be the best time to book our flights

    • Hi Deb,

Happy to help you, but unsure of what city you meant with STK? (Not finding anything in Alaska with that city code. Are you looking to fly into another city other than Anchorage?

      • sorry had the airport code wrong. We are booked on a 9 day small boat cruise going from Sitka to Ketchikan. We then want to head to Denali for a week. After Denali we are flying home. We are not reating a car but using air/train/motorcoach for our traveling. After Ketchikan we are flexible with how we get to Denali and back to GRR

        • Hi Deb,

Sitka has at least two direct flights daily from both Seattle and Anchorage, and a connecting flight to Juneau. In checking your itinerary, you’ll want to fly into Sitka (SIT) and return from Fairbanks (FAI) since those are the closest airports to where you’ll be. Alaska airlines is the only airline you’ll be able to fly on since they are the only airline that serves those destination. Unfortunately airlines only release airfares 330 days out from the current date, so you won’t be able to purchase your flights until August/September of this year. I’d recommend booking earlier than later since you’ll be traveling to/from smaller airports with less flights and seats available. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  170. Hi,

I’m flying from Cincinnati, Ohio to Cabo in Mexico on December 26, and returning on January 3 or 4. Should I go ahead and book my flight ASAP, or is there a certain amount of time that I should wait?

    Thanks!

    • Hi Marie,

Since you’ll be traveling during the peak holiday season, you’ll want to book your flights as soon as possible. Fares will only continue to get more expensive the closer it gets to your dates of travel. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1qkqUOE Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  171. My fiancé and I are getting married in November in St. Thomas (11/16 with 4 people returning 11/21 and two 11/24); We would most likely fly out of Omaha. I have been watching flights for quite some time now. It looks like your site suggests waiting until approximately 3 1/2 months out (mid August), would you say this rings true? It is right before Thanksgiving and at the end of their low season.

    Thanks,
    Jayme

  172. To add to my last comment, I have spoken with different airlines where some require a passport to St. Thomas (such as United and Delta) and some don’t (such as American and US). Being that we are flying from the US to a US Territory that doesn’t require a passport from US citizens, it doesn’t make much sense to me that some would and some wouldn’t require a passport. Why would that be?

    • Hi Jayme,

      Congratulations!! That’s very exciting.

Citizens of the U.S. or its territories (such as Puerto Rico) do not need a passport to travel to St. Thomas or the other islands within the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Croix and St. John). Even though it is not required, it is best to always travel with a passport when traveling outside of the 48 continuous States.

As for when to buy your flights, I would recommend booking sooner than later since you’re returning around the Thanksgiving holiday. Also since you’re flying from a smaller airport like Omaha versus flying our NYC for example its better to purchase sooner than later. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1mHCkMS Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  173. I am planning to fly to Anchorage Alaska with my family in June 2015. When I checked prices in May 2014 for June 2014 they were over $800.00. Now for the same month but for June 2015 they are $200.00 less. I am flexible as the day of the week I want to travel; however, since there is four of us, even small savings become significant. When would you recommend purchasing tickets?

    • Hi Joanna,

Where are you departing from? Since Anchorage Alaska isn’t a popular airport, you’ll want to book earlier than normal. I’d suggest to continue to monitor the fares and be prepared to purchase since you sound a little flexible with your dates. In any event, it is always best to book your flights at least 8 to 10 weeks prior to your departure, which is why when you checked flights in May 2014 for June 2014, the fares were higher. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  174. when is the best time to buy tickets to australia (sfo/lax to melbourne). I am planning to travel in the last week of march (25th – wednesday) and return around april 5. thanks.

    • Hi Kamesh,

Los Angeles is coming up cheaper than SFO, so I’d suggest departing from LAX if you’re able to. I’d suggest that you continue to monitor the fares a little longer since you’re flexible with your departing airports and flight times. I’d be sure to book your flights by November at the latest to be safe. Currently, fares from LAX for your dates are starting at around $1427 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. 175. My wife and I are planning to fly to San Luis Potosi for July 23, 2014 from Houston (IAH) and returning July 29, 2014. When I checked prices before, May and June, the prices were in the $700s. I was hoping they will go down since I travel to San Luis in Feb. 20 and the tickets were $366. I know they were not going to be the same price as $366. I was searching on the history rates how much were they and from July 1 to July 7 they were $478. I checked them on July 8, 2014 and thought they were the $478 price, but they weren’t. They were in the $760s. Can you please advised if is better to buy them now, wait a day or two, or I must as well just drive there. Can you please advised me on a recommendation.

    • Hi Daniel,

You should absolutely purchase your flights now or as soon as you can. You never want to wait till the last minute to book your flights when possible since the fares will always increase the closer it gets to the departure date. The fares won’t get any cheaper from now till July 23rd, they will only continue to get more expensive. When traveling to Mexico, it is best to book at least 10 weeks or more prior to your departure. 176. Hi, my partner and I are looking to travel from the DC area to visit a friend in the Dominican Republic over our Christmas break this year. Our dates are a little flexible, and we could leave from the 20th on, and return on or shortly after New Year’s Day. The lowest fares we’re seeing are $533 r/t pp, but for many of the fares, once we click on them the price magically jumps to $950 or more pp.

So to questions: 1) why does the fare jump when we select the flight? And 2) are we better off waiting for a little while?

It seems like many seats are already booked, so I’m guessing we should take a low fare now if we can get one!

    • Hi Devon,

You should absolutely book your flight sooner than later. That time of year is an extremely popular time due to the holidays and fares will be high and only continue to get more expensive as we get closer to the dates of travel. Based on that, you should book as soon as possible. If you can fly back on New Years Day, then the costs will be a little less expensive. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1mV609c Also keep in mind that when booking on CheapAir.com, if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you back the difference in the form of a travel voucher for up to $100 per ticket! Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  177. Thanks for helping so many people with all of this info!
Two of us have booked a cruise leaving Venice on Sept. 27, returning Oct. 4. Looking at flights now, and they appear to have dropped a few hundred $ since yesterday. We have buddy passes, but I am getting nervous about that, since we have to be in Venice by the 27th. We are flexible by several days before/after cruising. Should I hold out a little longer before booking? (Or should I throw caution to the wind and try the standby challenge?) :-)

    • Hi Pat,

That’s awesome you have buddy passes. A buddy pass does not guarantee that you will get on the flight. A buddy pass only guarantees that if there is enough open space, you will be able to fly. With that said, since you have a cruise to catch, its probably best that you book your flights to guarantee you will be able to fly and arrive in time for the cruise. If you’re seeing the fares lower, then I’d suggest buying them. Buddy passes are best for last-minute trips and not trips you have to be somewhere on a specific day or time, because there’s no guarantee. Ultimately it is up to you if you want to chance it. Italy’s “low season” is from November through February, so its more likely there will be potential space available during those months, but its tough to say for September/October.

  178. I am really impressed with all the specific advice going on in this blog, so I thought I would ask my question too!

A friend and I are planning a trip to Latin America summer 2015 – it is 100% definitely too early to buy the tickets as they are not even on sale yet (!) but I am trying to figure out an idea of the lowest range of times to buy tix for our flight so I know when to intensify my search.

We are very flexible with airports and only care about region. We have three legs of our flight. From the northeast seaboard specifically to Guatemala City next June. From anywhere in Southern Mexico/Central America to anywhere within about 1000 miles of Buenos Ares next July 2015, and then from anywhere within that 1000 miles back to the Northeast US August 2015. (for a total trip of 7-8 weeks)

From my preliminary research I have the impression that it is better to search for the airfare all at once as a multi-leg trip (I have seen some research on the ITA Matrix sight before finding your blog) since airfare that might be for our separate legs of our trip can still be bough round-trip booking to lower prices. I also am getting the impression that it would be fairly hard to get tickets for all three flights for less than $1,200, though we are hoping to find for less than $1,000 if we can.

I guess putting all that together (sorry this is such a long comment) I am wondering if you agree with my impressions of the lay of the land and research, and also, if you have a suggested booking window for the flights for this kind of trip. Mexico, the Caribbean and South America all have different windows, and my first and last flight are nearly two months apart, so I am having trouble figuring out what the ideal range of search would be.

    Much thanks!
    -M

    • Hi M,

That sounds like an awesome trip you have planned. Since you sound very flexible with your airports and dates, I would recommend trying our MapSearch which will allow you to search from a U.S. city to popular destinations world-wide. Using the MapSearch should give you a good idea of which airport to depart from and when the cheapest days to fly would be when traveling to Guatemala City. (While you will not be able to book a multi-leg itinerary using it, the MapSearch can be a great tool to help narrow down your dates.) With that said, airfares for June to August 2015 won’t become available until August to October 2014. (Airlines only release fares 330 days out from the current date.)

As for when to book, I would recommend booking your flights at least 3 to 4 months prior to your departure in June, but I’d suggest to continue to monitor the fares as soon as they become available. Without knowing exact cities and dates, its difficult to tell you when exactly to buy… but since you’ll be traveling internationally its a safe bet to book earlier than later.

If you could provide us with more details on which cities you’re looking to travel to/from, we could better assist you with the pricing and whether you should book a multi-leg trip or separate flights. Please let us know if you have any questions or need any assistance with finding flights.

  179. Hi,

I live in Knoxville, and my wife and I plan to fly to Bordeaux with an infant and a newborn baby to visit her family for Christmas. However, we are flying the day after Christmas. Everything I have read here has told me that if I am flying internationally, especially around the holidays, this is the time to buy. However, an airline pilot friend of mine told me that, generally, the day after Christmas is pretty low-key. I don’t know if that insight is applicable for only domestic flights, which he flies, or for international flights as well. My question is, is there historically a drop in passengers for the holidays the day after Christmas that would be reliable enough to take a chance on buying our tickets almost two months out, or should we just buy them now?

    Thanks

    • Hi President,

I would absolutely recommend purchasing your flights sooner than later. We actually have been tracking holiday flights for a couple years now and you can review our findings here: Holiday Cheap Flights Index Traveling the day after Christmas isn’t cheap, but its not as expensive if you were to travel on the Saturday or Sunday after. Ultimately since you’re traveling internationally and around the holidays, it would be in your best interest to purchase early. 180. I am traveling from Las Vegas to New Orleans for Mardi Gras next year. My travel dates are Thursday, February 12th until Wednesday, February 18th. I’ve been looking at flights and it seems that they’re limited since it is still fairly early but I’ve found a roundtrip flight on Spirit for $269. The next airline is almost a $200 jump in price. Is this a price I should take advantage of or wait until it’s closer to my travel date. Thanks for all of this great information and any help you can provide.

    • Hi Gabi,

Since you’re traveling in February 2015, you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the fares more, but being that it is Mardi Gras, you should be aware not to wait till the last minute to book. I’d suggest booking at least 3 months prior to your departure to be safe, but I suspect you might want to buy sooner than that. With that said, that Spirit Airlines flight isn’t a bad option, however you need to be aware that Spirit Airlines does charge a lot of random fees for everything which can increase the cost of the flight. 181. Hello! I’m planning a trip to Brussels, Belgium and London, England for about three weeks July 2015. I know that I cannot look up exact prices at the moment for flights however I’m curious to know what is a good deal and what isn’t. I’m planning to fly from SFO to Brussels and at the end of my trip from London to SFO (I’ll be buying a train ticket to get to London). My question is what would be a good deal for purchasing tickets and what are the average prices for tickets during that season. I was also wondering if its a good idea to have a different departure city for each flight or if it would be a better deal to arrive and depart from the same city? (ex SFO to Lon, Lon to SFO or SFO to Brus, Brus to SFO) Thank you so much!

    • Hi Alejandra,

The cheapest fares for that route start at around $1200, but during the summer months they increase to about $1400 and up. I’d aim for anything around there or cheaper. Purchasing a round-trip versus a multi-city trip can be better, but it just depends on the exact cities you’re checking. I’d encourage you to check the differences and compare them to see what you feel is best for your trip. Costs will be probably cheaper if you stick with a round-trip though, but you may find it more economical to purchase a multi-city trip based on your other destinations and time. I’d encourage you to check the fares early on and purchase earlier than later since the summer in Europe is a peak season. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  182. Hi, I am planning to travel to Orlando from Chicago on Oct31st-Nov5th. Would this fall into the 75day in advance instead of the 54day rule? I just want to ensure that I get the best price available. Thanks in advance.

    • Hi Vee,

You still have some time to continue to monitor the fares more, since you’re not traveling till October… but I’d be cautious not to wait too long. Aiming for around 60 days or more would be best. I’d suggest to continue to monitor the fares from now onward and be prepared to buy when you find the flights you like. 183. Hi you have been giving some great advice on this thread and was hoping you could help me. I will be touring Costa Rica this winter. I will be leaving Denver, Co on Jan 30, 2015 and flying into San Jose, Costa Rica and I will be returning on Feb 9th flying from Liberia, CR to Denver. Any suggestions of when I should book and what you think the average cost of a ticket is. I’m finding $750 thru United right now to be the cheapest. Thank You

    • Hi Tara,

$750 isn’t a bad price for that routing, especially for that time of year. The winter months are a peak season for Costa Rica due to the warm tropical weather, so flights will cost a little more during this season that at other times throughout the year. You could probably continue to monitor the fares a little longer, but with that said, I would recommend buying sooner than later since you’re traveling internationally. Keep in mind that when you buy your ticket from CheapAir, if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  184. Hi,

I am traveling from JFK to KIN on 12/22 (morning) and then out of MBJ to JFK (late afternoon/evening) on 12/31. I remember when I was looking a few months ago one airline had fares ~$500; however, now most airlines are in the ~$800+ range.

I’m wondering if the holiday time trumps the ~101-day Caribbean general rule and I should just book the best price I can get now….or if I should anticipate a more significant price drop before the price stays high through the end of the year.

    Thanks for any advice!

    • Hi Nicoletta,

Yes, you’re absolutely correct. The holidays always trumps the days rule. When traveling during peak times, such as holidays, you should always book as far in advance as possible since those dates are not likely to get any less expensive as we get closer to them. In fact, you can visit our Cheap Holiday Flights Index to learn more about purchasing flights during or around the holidays. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  185. Hello,
Looking to travel to grand cayman next April over school break. We have exchanged our timeshare and our room is booked. Flying April 12-19 2015, I am seeing flight tickets currently at $310 each which seems reasonable. We’ve gotten hammered in cost before waiting last minute to book flights over the kids spring and winter breaks. Question is…when is a good time to book a flight over a school vaca and are there any tips for flying cheap with 4 children? All are over the age of 6 and under 12. Thanks for your helpful article and time! Much appreciated! Jessica

    • Hi Jessica,

The costs can greatly vary depending on where you are departing from, so without knowing where you are departing from its difficult for us to check the pricing to confirm if those costs are good or now. With that said, since you’re flying to Grand Cayman which doesn’t operate a lot of flights, so it is wise to book early. Also, since you’re looking for 6 seats or more booking early would be your best option. With all that said, I’d definitely recommend booking sooner than later to avoid the fares from increasing. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  186. I plan traveling from Houston to Boston during Christmas time. Please let me know when is the good time to book the tickets. Thanks so much.

    • Hi Trish,

For flights during or around the busy holiday season, you’ll want to book as early as possible. In fact, we’ve created this helpful guide when searching for holiday flights which you can access here: http://bit.ly/1eqvsjN Keep in mind that when you buy your ticket from CheapAir, if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  187. We go to Aruba each year the first week of February. We normally book our flights using frequent flyer miles so I don’t watch the prices. This coming Feb we are including our daughter and family and will be purchasing those tickets. They will be flying from JAX to AUA. Since we fly on Delta we are watching the prices on Delta from JAX. Today the price has dropped $145 to $605. I feel we should buy now. Do you feel the price could drop much lower?

    • Hi Kathy,

While fares for that route can go as under $500 per person, based on what you’re seeing I would suggest purchasing those flights now while the fares are low. Since you’re looking for specific flights on a certain airline, you’re limited with your options which means you should book earlier to ensure you get what you want. Its likely they’ll continue to fluctuate as the year closes and we get closer to the departure in February, but a big drop like that indicates its a great time to buy. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  188. Hi,

I need your advice, I am planning a trip (2 Adult and 2 Child) in December 2014 from Saskatoon, Canada to Dubai, U.A.E on 8th of December.
and from Dubai, U.A.E to Karachi, Pakistan on 16th of Jan
and returning back from Pakistan on 16th of Feb.

I checked different websites including Emirates, the price for the whole package I am getting is like 1451 CAD, I saw that price drop to 1424 once but I thought it will drop more.
do you think 1451 is reasonable ?
    Thanks

    • Hi Umair,

For your routing, that’s not a bad price. I would definitely recommend purchasing your flights sooner than later to avoid the fares from increasing. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  189. Hello,
I’m thinking about flying to see my friend in Ohio, and from my research, I found that September is the best time to fly. Would you recommend an airline for this trip? I’m flying a round trip for a week from Florida.
Also, would this be better to book later in the window?
    Thank you!

    • Hi Kaitlyn,

Where in Florida are you departing from? Since you’re looking to travel in September, I’d suggest booking sooner than later since we’re about six weeks out from September. Please let us know where you’re departing from and we’d be happy to help you with which airlines would be the cheapest for your trip.

  190. CheapAir,
Did your study cover any more-specific places than Asia? I’m wondering what the best time to book to Bangkok, Thailand from the US is?
    Thanks,

    • Hi John,

Unfortunately our study was very broad and not route specific. With that said, I would suggest that depending on whether you’re traveling during a peak season (like the holiday season) or flying from a smaller airport versus a larger airport like LAX, then you should purchase early on. Otherwise, I’d suggest if you’re flying from a major market like SFO and flying during a non-peak season, then I’d recommend to monitor the fares more. Either way, you should book at least 3 to 4 months prior to your departure if possible. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  191. I am looking to book a flight for 4 adults and 2 infants in Feb 2015 from LGA or HPN to Orlando. Presently I’m seeing flights at around $700…will the prices get any better?

    Nicole

    • Hi Nicole,

LGA will definitely be the cheaper airport. I’d suggest to continue to monitor the fares more, based on your exact dates. It looks like some dates from mid to late February are expensive so if you’re looking to fly during that time, I’d consider purchasing sooner than later. With that said, LGA is a lot cheaper so I’d be sure to book at least 60 days or more prior to your departure in February, unless you’re traveling during that peak time in February. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1ugOEJw Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  192. My family of 6 will be traveling to London from Birmingham Alabama and return to Birmingham Alabama from Dublin sometime in May or June of 2015. It’s still a little ways out and I have recently begun searching for flights and found it to be anywhere from 1000 to around 1300 from site to site. Should I wait it out or jump on that. I guess what I’m trying to find out is what a good average flight to/from these locations would be during this time of the year. Thanks for the help! -Chris

    • Hi Jamison,

Based on what you’re finding that’s not a bad price. When booking flights to Europe during May and into June, you’ll want to purchase early on… especially when you’re looking for 6 seats. I’d recommend buying them sooner than later. Plus, when you purchase on CheapAir.com, you’re automatically enrolled in our Price Drop Payback program where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you back the difference in the form of a travel voucher for up to $100 per ticket! 193. Hi, I am planning a family trip to Europe next June 2015. We are a family of 4 flying from Miami to Paris, return flight from Venice to Miami. I found a price of approximately $950 a person from TAP Portugal airlines but everyone is telling me it is way too soon to purchase tickets and that prices will go on. Compared to other airlines, this is almost half the price on tickets. Should I grab this deal or listen to others advice and wait for the other airlines to drop their prices?
    Thank You!

    • Hi Melissa,

When it comes to buying flights to Europe for the summer, we like to side on booking earlier than later. In fact you can read some of our tips for buying summer flights to Europe here: http://bit.ly/1iTSDTN With that said, if you are flexible with your dates and flight times, I’d suggest holding out and monitoring the fares more. Otherwise, if you do like those cheaper flights with TAP Portugal, I’d recommend buying them now. Keep in mind you can shop in confidence when you purchase on CheapAir.com since you’re automatically enrolled in our Price Drop Payback program where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you back the difference in the form of a travel voucher for up to $100 per ticket! 194. Great article, thanks for offering some answers to what has always seemed so unanswerable. I’m aiming to book a trip to Australia on November 8 (or 7 or 9) and just last week the prices were $400 cheaper than they are now. I’m kicking myself for not buying last week, since I wanted to save up a bit more money. Do you think there’s a chance it will go back to the original price ($1700-$1800) or am I doomed?

    • Hi Megan,

I hate to say you probably missed the window, but November is considered a part of the “low season” for Australia, so I’d suggest to continue to monitor the fares the next few days to see if they shift back down any. I’d be prepared to buy if you do see them drop at all. With that said, I’d be certain to make your purchase sooner than later since you don’t want to put your purchase off too long. You can shop in confidence when you purchase on CheapAir.com since you’re automatically enrolled in our Price Drop Payback program where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you back the difference in the form of a travel voucher for up to $100 per ticket! 195. Hello,

My family of 5 are flying out from Buffalo to Orlando from October 8th to October 17th…. I paid 112 to get there & 112 to get back when southwest first opened up those dates. We have friends a family of 3 who will be joining us on the trip but have yet to book their flights! Prices have jumped, big time & that is Canada’s thanksgiving weekend which most of us Canadians will fly out of buffalo for cheeper prices…. They are looking to fly to orlando on rather the 9th, 10th or 11th… Looking at the flights now they are 244 is the cheapest for the direct on the 9th & then it starts getting up into the 300+. Do you suggest they book now or wait?

    • Hi Dee,

Based on what you’re seeing, I would advise them to book now or as early as possible. Since we’re about 10 – 11 weeks out from your departure, you don’t want to wait off any longer since the fares will only continue to get more expensive. Especially since you’re flying from a smaller airport in Buffalo. 196. Hello,
This is a lot of great information and I’m glad I stumbled upon it!

If I was to fly into Cancun (from ATL) in early May 2015, would I follow the 89 day Mexico booking “rule” or the 101 day booking “rule” for the Caribbean?

We are getting married in Puerto Morelos in May, 8 2015 and I’m putting travel tips on our wedding website. I want to make sure that I give (and follow) the correct guidelines!

    Thanks so much,
    Jana

    • Hi Jana,

Since you’re planning for your wedding, it would be wise to advise people to book their flights earlier than later. The reason being is that you have specific dates in mind so that limits your options and restricts what’s available. With that said, ATL is a large market so booking at least 3 months in advance would be a good decision. That’s roughly 12 weeks prior, but I’d recommend booking earlier if possible. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/1lF22On Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

      • Thanks for the information, it was helpful.
Just to clarify, with the studies that CheapAir did, do you/they consider Cancun to be Caribbean or Mexico?

  197. Hello,

I’m planning on taking a trip from Chicago to Mexico city by the last week of October. Since the fall season isn’t as popular as the summer season should I still follow the 89 day window or wait a little longer?

    Thanks in advance

    • Hi Jackie,

Currently, fares from Chicago to Mexico City are starting at around $450 per person, depending on your exact dates. While its not likely the fares will get any cheaper, you still have a little longer to monitor the fares more, but I’d be sure to book at least 7 weeks prior to your departure to be safe. To view flight schedules and book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/X4WDL1 Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  198. Hi CheapAir,

I plan on going to Sydney during Thanksgving break. Did I already miss my prime window? I’m coming from New York airlines. I’ve been trying to look at ticket prices every Tuesday.

    Thanks!

    • Hi Anna,

Depending on your exact dates of travel, I think you could still score a great deal on a flight… especially if you’re flexible with your travel dates. We’re about 3 months out from the end of November so I’d aim to purchase your flights sooner than later. 199. Hi, thanks for publishing all the research. Very useful info. I had a question regarding a ski trip planned for mid-feb 2015. We’re flying to DEN from ATL, and while there is no shortage of flights we are pretty sensitive regarding arrival time and departure time due to availability of shuttle buses from the airport to the ski resort. I was hoping you could help out on when would be best to buy the tix. We have a group of 12 and need to be on the same flight, or close proximity in arr/dep. Thanks again for the great info!!

    • Hi Wilso,

With a large group of 12, I’d recommend booking as a group. That way you can get the same fare for everyone and not have to search. Unfortunately you’d have to call the airlines directly to book a large group like that since you can only book up to 9 passengers in one reservation. I’d advise to check with Delta, United, and Frontier Airlines Group Travel departments which should be able to assist you in getting the same rate for everyone in your group. I’d call around and compare the rates you’re getting and go with the cheapest one. Otherwise, you’d have to book your group into smaller groups on the same flight and pay different amounts based on the availability. I’d recommend calling sooner than later.

  200. My wife and my Kid almost 4 years old are back in Cairo (CAI) and I am at Abu Dhabi (AUH) and we are looking forward to go to Adelaide (ADL) or Melbourne (MEL) from 6th of October till the 20th of October. I am really confused to manage this itinerary weather me going back to Cairo and go to Adelaide or Melbourne or to book to my family from Cairo and I book from Abu Dhabi and catch them…really confusing.

Plus I would like to go to Adelaide and leave from Melbourne or Vice Versa. I am sorry if I caused you any confusion but as you can see it is too much complicated. Thanks and looking forward to hear back from you.

    Tomy

  201. Hi, I am trying to get the best price on a Multi-city from Kansas City to Venice last week in October, and then back from Paris to Kansas City first week in November. My flexibility is +/- 1 day. I have been checking for the past 3 months and the prices are always the same. Check economy availability on my preferred flights, and outbound still have 68% of seats available and the return has 48% and another choice still has 91% of availability. It seems to me that those prices need to go down since I see very rare for a plane to leave with more than 100, and up to 200 empty seats. Should I wait a little more to see if they go down? Thanks

    • Hi Lookcle,

Being that you’re looking to travel in October, you’ll actually want to be prepared to book soon. We’re a little less than 3 months out from your departure and typically when booking international flights its best to book about 3 to 4 months in advance, depending on the location. Based on what you’re seeing, I’d recommend to keep an eye on the fares but be prepared to buy if you see them drop. It’s difficult to tell if the fares will actually drop. They usually will continue to increase as we get closer to the departure date, so just be prepared. Even though the flights may not be full, the airlines can reschedule flights and cancel them to maximize their capacity. So I wouldn’t just wait around too much longer. It would be a safer bet to buy soon, otherwise the fares could climb. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.
