5 International Destinations Open to U.S. Passport Holders

Travel lovers, do not despair! Last month, the State Department lifted its level 4 travel advisory recommending against international travel for Americans, and there are many spots around the globe open to U.S. passport holders.

Sure, air travel looks a little different right now, but there are great deals to take advantage of in many lovely destinations – some of them quite close to home!

Mexico

cabo san lucas mexicoLet’s start with the very good news. Our neighbor to the south has been open to U.S. dollars all along, and it’s a quite popular destination for both east and west coast denizens. For the short term, we recommend hitting the pacific coast of the country until hurricane season wraps up. Los Cabos is great for all-inclusives and private resorts, while Puerto Vallarta is fantastic for old-school style. Californians have also been flocking to Sayulita just north of Puerto Vallarta in recent years – it’s a more rustic, less developed, and a bit more hipster (if you’re into that sort of thing).

None, though the official word from both our governments is that only essential travel is permitted until September 21. Having said that, this restriction will expire in a few days and there has been plenty of tourist activity around the major tourist hubs. No border restrictions have been enacted by Mexico against American tourists and North American airlines continue to operate flights.

Croatiahvar croatiaThough it’s become much more developed in recent years, Croatia is still a destination that offers a mix of European elegance, amazing outdoor activities and a lot of wide open spaces for prime social distancing. While old town Dubrovnik and Split offer nightlife and crowds, there are many areas just outside the city centers that offer relaxing beaches. For a twist, consider staying on one of the many Croatian islands like Hvar – a heady oasis of wineries and rosemary fields.
