Since the Olympics are finished, the kids are back in the classroom and football season is kicking off, you might think summer is done! But don’t put your beach umbrella and swimsuit away just yet. You’ll miss out on some great end of summer destinations – sunny spots with bargain fares for the bargain shopper and late summer traveler. Here’s a few solid vacation picks to close out September in true style – without the high season price tags.
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
This classic east coast beach destination is chock full of deals at the close of summer. Across the board, you’ll experience fair prices at hotels, restaurants and even spa services as the summer season winds down.
Getting there: Nonstop flights from Chicago start at $146 round trip on Spirit.*
Accommodation: The Day’s Inn Grand Strand has rooms for just $70/night. Or splash out at the Hilton Myrtle Beach where an ocean view room starts at $209/night.**
Hawaii is one of those evergreen destinations without a low season. But here’s some insider info – as high season summer crowds depart, late summer and fall bring some hot deals to the mainland to entice you. Rooms and airfares double in January but resorts all over Honolulu, Maui, and Kauai offer deep savings for the savvy traveler in late summer.
Getting there: United, Virgin America, and American Airlines all have nonstop flights from San Francisco from under $500 round trip to Maui and around $450 to Honolulu. Aloha!*
Accommodation: The Castle Kamaole Sands Condominium Resort in Kihei, Maui is just $121/night and comes with full kitchen, free parking and stellar TripAdvisor reviews. Even the tony. Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa is on sale with rooms available for around $300/night.**
People think you need a year or more to prepare for a European vacation, but that’s certainly not the case. When fares are this low, you can just channel your inner gypsy and fly wherever the wind takes you. Once you hit September, fares that routinely cost $1,000 or more for the summer months can be had for a song. Weather around the continent is lovely and temperate, and the summer crowds are gone. This year, with Brexit on the table, the exchange rate for Americans makes a U.K. vacation even more affordable. Experienced travelers wouldn’t think of going to Europe in the summer when they can visit in late summer and early fall. You’ll see why if you go.
Getting there: Flights to London and Paris from New York start at around $575 round trip on Turkish Air for select dates in September.*
Accommodation: London hotels are notoriously expensive which is why we were thrilled to see so many great deals in September. Check out the Ibis London Blackfriars which puts you in Central London for just $155/night. You can take it up a notch and stay at the 4-star Thistle Kensington Gardens for $179/night. The Ibis Paris Montmarte is a great little property in the middle of one of the buzzier neighborhoods in Paris and rooms are just $97/night.**
Think outside the box with us for a minute on this one. Take your inner child and your significant other to Disney World after all the families have headed back to school. You’ll find much shorter lines at all of the popular attractions and enjoy shoulder season savings at Orlando-area hotels and entertainment.
Getting there: Nonstop flights to Orlando from Dallas on Spirit for $249 round trip and from Los Angeles for $361 round trip.*
Accommodation: The sheer number of great hotel deals makes it hard to narrow the field to just one or two picks with the lowest fares coming in under $40. The Courtyard Orlando Lake Buena Vista in the Marriott Village is a great 3 star option at just $89/night as is the Radisson Hotel Lake Buena Vista for $93/night. Even the 5-star Waldorf Astoria is a steal at $269/night. At prices like these you can afford to go big.**
Cancun, Mexico and the Caribbean
Technically it’s is hurricane season in these parts. But if you arm yourself with travel insurance, it can be a great time to score fantastic travel deals. Cancun crowds thin out in late summer quite a bit, but the service levels at local resorts remain high. Take advantage and you could save up to 75% off high season accommodation prices.
Getting there: Flights on Aeromexico from Los Angeles are under $500 in September and under $600 from Seattle on select dates.*
Accommodation: If you’re just looking for a cheap place to throw your backpack, you can get a tidy little 3-staar room at the Hotel Plaza Kokai Cancun for $26 bucks. Kids stay free at Hotel Batab and the rooms are only $29/night. The 4 ½-star Real Inn Cancun has all of the customary bells and whistles (free WiFi, flat screen televisions, trendy design, air conditioning) and standard rooms start at $70/night. Deluxe rooms are just $95/night.**
Don’t forget about Palm Springs and Phoenix as well. All of these hot-weather favorites are still offering big discounts before golf season gets underway later in autumn. If you wait, you’ll pay sometimes triple the summer rate. Our Summer Flights page is a great resource to give you additional destinations.
