Everything you need to know about financing your airline tickets with monthly payments

We’re bringing you a new way to make travel plans attainable and affordable. Now you can finance your airline tickets purchased on CheapAir.com with Affirm, a simple and quick monthly payments option with no hidden fees, gimmicks or catches.

monthly payments for flights

Here are all the details you need to see if this cool new option is right for you.

1. How do I pay for flights with Monthly Payments on CheapAir.com?

We keep things simple for customers and the monthly payments option is no different. When you get to the checkout page in your purchase, you simply select “Monthly Payments” to start.

You’ll then be redirected to Affirm to provide your full name, mobile number, email address, date of birth, and the last four digits of your social security number. You’ll find out if you qualify in real-time. For purchases of $100.00 or more, you will see three loan term options (3, 6, or 12 months), exactly how much your monthly payment will be under each option, and your interest rate (rates from 10-30% APR based on creditworthiness). For purchases of less than $100.00, not all loan term options are available. That’s it! That’s all you need to do to be set up to pay off your purchase in easy, budget-friendly payments.

2. What is Affirm?

We’ve partnered with an innovative financial services company called Affirm to make financing your travel purchases easy and convenient. Working with Affirm allows us to seamlessly bring you the monthly payments option on CheapAir.com. Affirm manages the application, approval, and payment process so we can focus on what we’re good at – being an online travel agency and bringing you affordable airline tickets, accommodation and car rentals! Affirm loans are made by Cross River Bank, a New Jersey state-chartered bank, Member FDIC.

3. How is it different from using a credit card?

Using our monthly payments option couldn’t be more different than using a credit card. You will never have to pay more than the cost you see at checkout with Affirm. Your interest rate, monthly payment amounts, interest cost, and total cost will be clearly displayed at checkout. There are no other fees (hidden or otherwise) to stress over.

CheapAir.com’s monthly payments option is not a revolving line of credit. Should you decide at a future date to buy with monthly payments again, you will make a new request for credit with Affirm on CheapAir.com.

4. Does the credit check impact my credit score?

When you shop on CheapAir.com and apply for Affirm monthly payments for your flight purchase, Affirm only does a “soft” credit check to verify your identity and determine your eligibility for financing. It does not impact your credit score at all. However, for loans requested on or after August 3, 2016, Affirm reports information about your loan and payment activity to Experian (and plans to report to other credit bureaus in the future). Affirm’s goal is to give you the opportunity to build your credit history as you repay your Affirm loans.

5. Does CheapAir.com or Affirm handle payments?

CheapAir is in close partnership with Affirm to bring customers the monthly payments option. If you make a purchase on CheapAir.com using monthly payments, your loan, including all of your monthly payments, will be managed directly by Affirm. You will be able to pay in whatever form best suits you – debit card, bank transfer, or personal check. Affirm will send you text and email reminders so you don’t miss a payment. If you have any questions about your loan, please contact Affirm directly at help@affirm.com – they have a customer care team ready to assist you.

6. Is my personal information secure with monthly payments?

Yes, protecting your personal information is very important to us. We took the time to research and vet the right company to bring you this option. Affirm encrypts sensitive data like Social Security numbers, and maintains physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect your information. Affirm does not sell or rent your information to anyone, ever. We’re confident that you will find Affirm to be a safe, easy and secure financing option.

    1. Hi Kevin, Not just yet. We’ve rolled this out to U.S. customers to start, but we’ll make a note and contact you when monthly payments come online for Canada. Thanks for the inquiry!

        1. Hi Marian, Is your booking with us? If so, you’ll see a 10-digit confirmation number that starts with either a #17 or #18. Please contact us at help@cheapair.com for assistance with your ticket.

    1. Hi Anthony, thanks for the question. At the moment we do not offer packages but it’s certainly something to think about in the future. Thanks for checking us out. Please let us know if you have other questions. We’d love to help.

  1. If I decide to use the monthly payment option, do I take the trip and pay afterwards? Or do I need to pay off the total monthly payments before the trip?

    1. Great question Chris. The installments kick in shortly after purchase, and you do not have to have the trip paid off in order to fly.

    1. Hi Sally, Great question. Yes, if you fall too far behind on your payments, Affirm can send your account for collections. However, that is always a last resort and the preference is always to work with anyone having difficulty with their loan terms. You can see a full explanation in the Affirm FAQs, under the section “Paying My Bill.” Check it out.

  2. When I set the dates for my flight, it wants me to hit purchase to lock it in. I don’t see an option for monthly payments

  3. Hi I was trying to submit my application and I see that TD bank was not in the list of banks. Is there another way to see if I get approved? Thanks

    1. Hi Jasmine! Thanks for the question. We’re partnered with Affirm to manage all of your loan details. Cross River Bank is the lender of all Affirm loans. Any questions regarding the management of your loan should be directed to Affirm. You can read their FAQs. If you need additional clarification, reach out directly to Affirm via the “contact” button at the bottom of the FAQs page.

  4. Does the payment options work for international flights? I’m trying to book to germany but i don’t see the monthly payment options.

    1. Great question! No, there are no prepayment penalties or fees for paying off your loan early. Also, if you pay off your entire loan before the final due date, you will pay interest only for the period that you borrowed the money.

    1. Hi Sarah, Affirm (our financing partner) performs a ‘soft’ credit check to help verify your identity and determine your eligibility for financing. This ‘soft’ credit check will not affect your credit score. The best way to determine if you can be approved is to choose the “monthly payments” option at checkout. You are not obligated to purchase and will be given the terms of your loan eligibility before check-out.

  5. I noticed in a comment previous. someone asked if they missed a payment would it go to collections, which you replued yes if payments get to far behind. so my question is does the amount approved for the trip have to be paid in full before you actually take the trip?

    1. Hi Crystal. Not at all. You start paying for the trip shortly after purchase, but it absolutely does not hold up your travel plans.

        1. Sure, Crystal! We’ve been around since 1989. We think we’re pretty legit! 😉 You can reach us at 1-800-CHEAPAIR, natch.

  6. I am on cheapair.com looking at hotel rates. Considered booking one and went to checkout it will not let me select Monthly Payments. The hotel stay is will over $500.

    1. Hi Jess, The monthly payments option is only for airline tickets at this time. We do have lots of affordable hotel options in most destinations. Please let us know if we can assist you in a search.

  7. Hello, This service just appeared on australian morning television (great free advertising) But is it available to australian customers. If not when do you think you will roll this out here in Australia as I would like to use this service and go back to california next year. Thank you – marcus

    1. Hi Marcus, Thanks for the kind words! We think it is a great option for customers and the response has been very positive! We have rolled out this option for U.S. customers only at the moment, but will make a note of your interest and let you know if and when we bring on additional countries in the future.

    2. Hi Marcus, Thanks for the kind words! We think it is a great option for customers and the response has been very positive! We have rolled out this option for U.S. customers only at the moment, but will make a note of your interest and let you know if and when we bring on additional countries in the future.

    1. Hi Gioconda, At the moment, the monthly payments options is available to customers living in the United States who have a social security number.

  8. our national newspaper did an article about this this week and its everything i wanted in affordable and attainable travel. I was gutted to see its only available for US residents. i hope this is a huge success for you guys though and that you do eventually roll it out internationally (Im from NZ). Well done!

    1. Thanks so much. So far it’s been going well. It would be great if we could roll out to other countries and/or blaze a trail so local online travel agencies can make the leap to provide this to their customer base.

  9. Do you offer the same terms for car rentals? If so, do you provide basic CDW insurance like many credit cards do, so we don’t need to purchase the pricey option the rental agencies offer?

    1. Hi Gary, Sorry, no. Basically we introduced the option since airline tickets are so pricey and so many people these days don’t have a credit card for large purchases. Intriguing idea, though.

  10. I’ve been working overseas and don’t have an American phone number to receive the confirmation text message from Affirm. What can I do?

    1. Hi Idries, That is a great question but unfortunately I don’t have a great answer for people in your specific situation. Customers must provide a valid U.S. mobile or VoIP number and agree to receive SMS texts, so there unfortunately isn’t a workaround available for you, unless you have a U.S. based VoIP). This is straight from the Affirm site FAQs (https://www.affirm.com/faqs/):

      1) Be 18 years or older (19 years or older in Alabama or if you’re a ward of the state in Nebraska).
      2) Provide a valid U.S. or APO/FPO/DPO home address. Buy with Affirm is not currently available to West Virginia residents.
      3) Provide a valid U.S. mobile or VoIP number and agree to receive SMS texts. The phone account must be registered in your name.
      4) Provide your full name, email address, date of birth, and the last 4 digits of your social security number to help us verify your identity.

I’ll make a note to reach back out to you should anything chance that makes the monthly payments feasible for you.

  11. I truly thank you guys at Cheap Air and Affirm for pairing up and giving customers the option to book flights and pay over time. I used the option today and checked out with no problem, thank you once again!

  12. Hello, I’m student in Malaysia and I need to go to usa for a week from 28 oct to 6 November. Is that ok if I book now and I pay monthly even after my trip ?

    1. Hi Sima, It really depends on your situation. Customers must provide a valid U.S. mobile or VoIP number and agree to receive SMS texts to a U.S. based VoIP.

  13. I fly about 4 to 5 times a year. Do I have to have one flight paid off before I do another flight? If no will the company Merge my payments together?

    1. Hi Enrique, Great question. You do not necessarily have to have one flight paid off before booking another flight, and youdo not have to have a flight paid off before travel but each application is treated independent of the other. You cannot merge payments at this time.

    1. Hi Evelyn, Affirm does sometimes require additional information from applicants before approval (one of the pieces of additional information can include checking account details). You can read all about the requirements on Affirms’s site. Check out their FAQs: https://www.affirm.com/faqs/.

    1. Hi Edna, Not at the moment. We have had multiple inquiries, however, so we’ll keep your name on file should something change in the future and we start working with a Canadian bank for financing.

  14. I’m curious what if the traveler is different from the person who is buying the ticket through the payment option? Ex: if a mother is buying a ticket for her family member. Will there be a problem because it’s not the person traveling?

    1. Hi there Teal. Great question. We do support this use case and the person who is taking out the loan needs to enter their information in the Affirm Loan Application. The information of the person paying for the trip should match the information entered for the loan application.

    1. Hi Chasady, Every application is a little bit unique and we do not do the vetting internally. Our financial partner Affirm is in charge of approvals and facilitating the loans. Here is the message from their FAQs “While we strive to offer all creditworthy applicants financing with Affirm, we simply aren’t able to approve every loan application. If we aren’t able to approve your application, we will immediately notify you of our decision and denial reason via a secured message.” If you did not receive a message with the details, can you check your spam or junk email to see if it was caught there?

    1. Hi Sybil, Thanks for asking and the answer is, unfortunately, not at the moment. We have had quite a few inquiries from international customers and will keep you all posted if things should change. At the moment the loans are going through a U.S. based bank.

    1. Great question, Randy. There are no prepayment penalties or fees for paying off your loan early. Also, if you pay off your entire loan before the final due date, you will pay interest only for the period that you borrowed the money. Affirm rebates any unearned portion of the finance charge for the remaining loan period.

  15. You claim this to be for us customers but I just got turned down because it says not available for West Virginia customers. Is this state specific or what?

    1. Hi Jenny, Great question. Not at the moment, but we are taking down names and email addresses should we expand up your way.

  16. I wanted to give this a try, but before checking out it does not give me a price or how much my monthly fee is going to be. How can I know this before hitting the submit button?

    1. Hi Jess, You have to choose the tickets you need and then choose the monthly payments option at checkout. Before you are locked in, you’ll be shown exactly how much your monthly payment will be.

  17. Ok I will like to take a trip with my daughter and family to Paris,Rome and Spain, if I don’t cualifed for the credit, can I payed monthly until I finish?

    1. Hi Mirta, Did you choose the monthly payments option at check out? You can see if you qualify by choosing the option (it does not affect your credit to apply).

  18. Will monthly financing options affect prices of promo tickets wherein we have to pay higher as compared to using debit or credit card,? Thanks

    1. Hi Lito, I’m not sure I understand your question. The monthly payments option is available for flights sold on CheapAir.com. I’m not sure about “promo tickets.”

  19. I screen-captured great price for the itinerary, but when I completed all of the details and chose the PP Options, the tabs won’t respond…

    1. Hi Tina, there is no requirement for number of tickets purchased. You can apply for however many you need – the person applying for the payment plan assumes the responsibility for paying back the loan.

  20. This actually work, unfortunately I have to cancel my flight arrangement within 24 hours because of an emergency situation.:( I will be using Cheap air though from now on and I told several of my traveler friends about this website. Their customer service are great, the prices are cheap plus the payment plan is really clever 🙂

    1. Hi Comfort, Yes you can purchase tickets to Ghana using our monthly payment option if you qualify. To apply for the monthly payment options you need to:
Be 18 years or older (19 years or older in Alabama or if you’re a ward of the state in Nebraska).
Provide a valid U.S. or APO/FPO/DPO home address. Buy with Affirm is not currently available to West Virginia residents.
Provide a valid U.S. mobile or VoIP number and agree to receive SMS texts. The phone account must be registered in your name.
Provide your full name, email address, date of birth, and the last 4 digits of your social security number to help us verify your identity.
Please let us know if you have any other questions we can assist you with.

  21. Hi, i just wanna know what website to apply for the credit coz i’m planning to buy and book ticket for next year?
And how about having a bad credit are the gona approved it?

    1. Hi Mark, When you get to checkout on CheapAir.com, you choose “monthly payments” from the options for payment. At that point, the system will take you to the “Affirm” partner site where you will go through a “soft” credit check (that will not impact your credit score) and you’ll find out if you’re eligible.

    1. Hi Elana, We do not have a date at the moment. This options would be completely dependent on our finance partner (Affirm) working with Canadian banks for loans and I am not aware of plans to address this in 2016. We will certainly let everyone know who has expressed interest if and when plans start to come together.

    1. Hi Derrick, What airline are you traveling? Did you book with us? Please reach out via help@cheapair.com and have your booking confirmation number handy so we can see what the specific rules are for your flights.

        1. Hi Derrick, So AA allows a free carryon and personal item. First check in bag is $25, second is $35 per passenger.
          https://www.aa.com/intl/fr/travelInformation/baggage/allowUsDom.jsp#

Length shall not exceed 22in / 56cm, width shall not exceed 14in / 35cm and height shall not exceed 9in / 23cm. The bag must fit in the baggage frames located throughout the check-in area at the airport. A garment bag that fits in the baggage frame will count as your one carry-on bag

And one personal item such as a purse or laptop bag.

  22. i want my brother to come travel with me can i purchase his ticket using affirm/? why is affirm not working right now it keeps saying oops something went wrong? if I’m approve do i have to pay it before his flight or will he be confirmed?

  23. Hello my name is Gerald. I am happy to hear of this program payment plan, here is my question, I do not see on this site how I can add a passenger for 2 of the 4 tickets. Will I have to call you guys to do my tickets? Here is my scenario

Me December 20, from Orlando, FL to Seattle, WA
Me & Daughter December 21, from Seattle, WA to Orlando, FL
Me and Daughter December 27, Orlando, FL to Seattle, WA
Me December 28, to Orlando, FL

Basically I am flying to pick up my daughter, and fly her here for Christmas and then drop her back off and com back here, I was wondering will I have to call to have this done, because it wont let me do this on your site. Thank you.

    1. Hi Gerald, Yes, this is a bit of a problem. We cannot book the “monthly payment” tickets over the phone so you would have to book the fares online separately and then apply to pay for them separately. Once you have the tickets, you can call us to link the reservation for you. I would book the Dec 20 ticket and the December 28 ticket as one reservation and then the ticket for the two of you as one reservation (Dec 21 to Dec 27). I would also probably apply for the monthly payment plan on that reservation. It is not clear to me whether you would be approved for both reservations, so I would aim high and see if you can get the pricier itinerary with two travelers approved. In the event you did not get approved for the second ticket, you’d have to pay for that on a credit or debit card, Bitcoin or using Western Union.

  24. Hello. Let say I get approve for this. If I book a roundtrip flight to the Philippines from Atlanta, Georgia & my ticket is let say a total of $1200. When will I have to start making payments on that?

Trying to see if I have to make payments in 30 days or few months?

    1. Hi there, So sorry but at the moment the monthly payments option is only available to residents of the United States. As part of the approval process, you have to have the following: https://www.affirm.com/faqs/. We are taking note of requests we receive outside of the U.S. in case we expand to other countries. Thank you for your interest.

  25. I purchased a $300 airline ticket using Affirm a few weeks back. I’ve now learned that there is a hard inquiry on my Experian credit report. According to your website Affirm only does soft inquiries. This is an improper lending disclosure and a violation of law under the the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). I will allow 48 hours from this posting for someone to contact me about how this can be resolved. If not I will file litigation in the Middlesex County District Court for recovery of monetary damages relating to this incident. -Dave

    1. Hi Dave, your comment came in on Saturday morning (when we do not have staff covering the blog). I’m looking into this now and will be back in touch with you later today. Can you send me your best contact details offline? shannonm@cheapair.com. We’ll get to the bottom of this.

    1. Hi Madeline, The approvals are not made based on number of tickets. If you’d like to try and finance with Affirm, just go through the selection process for the number of tickets you would like to finance and go through the approval process at checkout. You will have a chance to review terms before you have to commit.

  26. Where has CheapAir & Affirm been all these years??? Being the kind who loves and lives for traveling, trust me to be your customer till death do us part. The process is so straight forward and very simple. It took me less than 5minutes to get confirmation of my flight details. Let me give it a few months to decide if I’ll even need my Citi Advantage Card anymore. Great job guys!

    1. Hi there, Yes, you can use monthly payments to finance international trips. Just choose “monthly payments” at checkout to get the process started.

  27. Hi, you said your finance rates go from 10% to 30%. 10% still seems high for someone with perfect credit. Is that as low as they possibly go? Seems to me that one can get a loan from a bank like a credit union at a rate under 10%….
    Thanks for the input.

    1. Hi Laura, Yes you can use monthly payments to finance both domestic and international flights. Just choose “monthly payments” at checkout.

  28. now i have question i have a friend that has part of the air fare to help me get my wife i need to come up with my part of air fare i need to come up with 1000 dollars now can make payments on my part of it

    1. Hi Steve, If I’m understanding your question correctly, you’d like to know if you can finance part of the cost of an airline ticket. Unfortunately, we can only finance complete tickets. In your case, you’d have to finance one entire ticket. Hope this helps!

  29. Hello! I made 2 attempts to use affirm for financing and it stating it’s currently down and use other payment method. Is the financing option still working? tnx

    1. Hi Ryan, we our entire site was down yesterday for a migration, but this doesn’t sound like the same issue (you wouldn’t have been able to access our site at all). Can you let me know if you’re still having problems?

  30. Can I purchase a flight with monthly installments for a relative? I’m case they’ll do not have sufficient or good credit to do it on their own?

    1. Hi Jay, Yes this is fine. You can purchase the ticket for whomever you like – the financial obligation will be yours to bear.

  31. Hello;

I do not understand who this works. I apply with my information, i cannot be approved, I used my wife information and it cannot be approved, I used my father information and it cannot be approved. All of us with good credit, Stable Job, Stable income. The system says We could not verify your identity based on the information provided, sorry this decision is final. So how it can be final, there is no option available to confirm the identity and proceed with the process? There is not a customer service number to call? There is not additional help? How can I know if we did something wrong during the application? Are you promoting a service that it cannot be used and there is no customer care? Please let me know herbie.merced@gmail.com

    1. Hi Herbie, There are strict requirements to verify identity. I can put you in touch directly with Affirm (the company that managed this process) if they have not responded already. Please let me know.

    2. Hi, i have had the same issue. I just wanted to know were you able to finish up the verification? I have tried reapplying but it now auto rejects. Thank you for your time.

  32. This Option is applicate for users outside from EE.UU. ? I have a credit card of a Bank of United States. Travel two or three times at year, work and live in Venezuela and my account bank is Bank of America

    1. Hi Judy, That option is fine. You can book a ticket under anyone’s name – the monthly payment option will be on your credit.

  33. Hello I need to book flights to Australia for a wedding and want to use the financing option and have it paid by departure. I would need to leave March 2018 but I can’t seem to book that far in advance. Is there a way to do this now or do I need to wait until it gets closer? Thanks

    1. Hi Tom, If you are booking flights for more than 9 people, it is always best to book direct with the airlines. They do offer group pricing.

  34. I was attempting to purchase 5 tickets using the monthly payment option but it is saying that there is a problem with my checkout. And to contact Affirm if this continues. Is this still available?

  35. I was wondering if one member of my family will apply for affirm and when get approved, can she name the plane ticket for my behalf? Thanks!

    1. Yes, this is an acceptable way to use monthly payments. Make sure your family member uses your name for the ticket details.

  36. I’ve booked the flight and it’s given me the trip summary and I have the payments planned out, does this mean i’m done? Should I do anything else?

  37. Hi,

Can i book ticket for someone else, i mean i will get a loan from Affirm and buy the ticket for someone else is that possible?

    Regards
    Tayyab

    1. Hi there, Yes you can do that. The person on the ticket does not have to be the person qualifying and repaying the loan.

  38. i dont see the option when i was trying to check out im trying to buy tickets to tampa florida from las vegas, nevada

    1. Hi Essence, It comes up after you finalize the tickets. Did you get all the way through the process and it’s not offered at the payment page?

    1. Hi Michelle, At the moment this option is available to travelers with a U.S. address. You’re not the first to ask, so please know we are looking into this for our international customers.

  39. gOOD MORNING! i JUST WANT TO INQUIRE IF I WILL BE QUALIFIED TO APPLY FOR THIS OFFER. i HAVE NO EXISTING CREDIT CARD. Thank you.

    Evelyn

    1. No, not immediately. Financial arrangements will be made with our financing partner, Affirm, at the time of booking.

    1. Hi Samuel, Not yet. You have to have a U.S. mailing address and bank account in order to qualify. Check back, though. This is a pilot program. It may expand to other counties.

  40. i will be glad to have you furnish me with more details concerning installmental ticket payment.i am a Nigerian and at the moment live in Nigeria.thank you.

    1. Hi Funmi. at the moment you need a U.S. address and bank account to use our monthly plan. Keep checking back. If we have more interest and have the capabilities, we might be adding additional origin countries.

  41. I want to buy my mother in law a round trip ticket to Dallas. Can she still fly even though it’s under my information?? Since I want it.

    1. Hi Michelle M,

You can definitely purchase a ticket for another person. You just need to make sure at the time of booking that you enter your mother’s name and information in as the passenger and when it comes to the payment, you’ll enter your information. Also keep in mind, when you purchase flights with CheapAir.com if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you back the difference in the form of a travel voucher for up to $100 per ticket! Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  42. Greetings,
I do hope you are doing well today. I am seriously considering doing the financing for my tickets but not sure if I would be able to since my credit is less than perfect. Can you give me an idea if they are strict with this as with getting a credit card. I need to get tickets to see my family this year but don’t have all the funds to purchase the tickets outright. Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much and have a blessed day.
    Yours Truly,
    Bill Gerace

    1. Hi William, Affirm (the financial company that we partner with), does do a “soft” credit check but the best way to find out if you qualify is to go through the process of being approved. It will only take 5-10 minutes after you choose tickets and then you will know for sure whether you can qualify.

      1. Hi. There if. I. Do that would i have to purchase them id rather see if im eligible furst. Ty so much for your. Help.😁😁😁😁

        1. Hi William, There really isn’t a way to check to see if you are eligible without going through the process. It’s a great question – food for thought. I do know that the soft credit check will not affect your credit score in the negative.

  43. Hi, I want to do the payment on cheap flight but I don’t know the process.Do you have an M-Pesa number to be an easy way?

    Regards,

    1. Hi there Sax, At the moment the monthly payments option is only available to people residing in the United States (who have a U.S. address). We have had multiple inquiries like yours – will keep you on file if we should expand this service beyond the United States.

  44. Hi. Is there a way to book the flight and pay with affirm? I dont see the option when check out, only to pay with credit card. Can you please show me how? Thanks

  45. My bank is on there to link at checkout, however, it is saying it can’t link at this time. I have tried it on numerous days and get the same message. I already have an Affirm account and it is linked. I don’t know what the problem is.
