Once upon a time, travelers over the age of 65 qualified for senior airfare – lower-priced seats for older folks. Unfortunately, these days the airlines move towards leaner, a la carte tickets has all but done away with senior discounts on domestic flights. There are still a few airlines who offer better prices for seniors. We’ll share that intel here – so you can see if you and your trip qualify. We’ll also give you some tips for saving on your next vacation as a senior.

AARP Flight Discount with British Airways

The best discount might just be the British Airways AARP deal – which allows AARP members between $65-200 off their flight (depending on the fare class). To qualify for membership you need to be 50 or over and your flights should be booked by January 31, 2022.

Other Flight Discounts for Seniors

American Airlines, United, and Southwest all offer senior discounts for people 65 and older on “select routes.” To uncover what those routes and discounts are, you have to call the airlines directly (none of the fares are available to book online).

Hotel Discounts for Seniors

Most of the large chains offer a senior discount and AARP discount. Each hotel chain has a slightly different threshold for how old you have to be, so it’s best to call in advance to see if you qualify. The discount is usually around 10-15% and most of the time requires an advance reservation. WE found the best senior discount at Hyatt, where you can qualify for up to 50% off your bill in some cases! Wyndham also has a pretty generous senior discount – 20%!

Car Rental Discounts for Seniors

That AARP membership will also save you on your next auto rental at select agencies.

  • Alamo offers 25% off for AARP members
  • Avis will give you a $10-25 kickback for being over 65
  • Budget offers 10-25% off verified AARP members
  • Dollar and Hertz give everyone 50+ a discount. No strings attached!

Amtrak Senior Discounts

All travelers 62+ qualify for 15% off the lowest published fare on most Amtrak trains.

National Park Lifetime Pass for Seniors

For $80, travelers aged 62+ can buy a lifetime pass to more than 2,000 federally managed sites.

You have to know where to look for them, but senior discounts do still exist! It’s also doesn’t hurt to ask at restaurants and retail shops. Sometimes the management has discretion to offer a discount, and if you ask you just might get it!
