Dream of bypassing airport security lines? Sign up for PreCheck

If you dread the current Transportation Security Administration (TSA) airport screening process of taking off your shoes to walk barefoot across the floor, or removing your laptop from your tightly-packed bag, or slipping off your belt, or—need we go on?

Dream of bypassing airport security lines? Sign up for PreCheck

Well, good news: For $85, you can potentially avoid this process for five years!

The U.S. TSA is now allowing all travelers to apply directly for expedited airport screening, which would allow you to avoid things like shoe removal and laptop checks. The program, called PreCheck, was previously only available to travelers nominated by airlines based on frequent-flier miles or through a U.S. Customs program for international travelers.

To join PreCheck directly, all you have to do is pay the fee, undergo a background check and visit a TSA “Enrollment Center” to verify your identity and provide fingerprints. Then you’ll receive a Known Traveler Number, allowing you to use dedicated security lanes for yourself and other Known Travelers at more than 40 airports throughout the U.S.

The program will begin later this year. The first two enrollment centers will be at Washington Dulles International Airport and Indianapolis Airport, but the plan is add additional locations nationwide.

TSA reminds everyone that all travelers are subject to unannounced and random security precautions—so remember, expedited screening is not necessarily guaranteed.

  1. I’m planning a “first class” (Z) round trip to Aruba from Newark, NJ from October 11, 2014 thru October 11,2014

When is the best time of year to purchase the “CHEAPEST” rates?

    1. Hi Manuel,

For your flights, its best to wait till about 9 to 12 weeks prior to your departure in October 2014. Unfortunately airlines only release their flight schedules 330 days out from the current date, so we won’t be able to check fares until December of this year. Even then, you’ll probably want to wait till about 2 to 3 months prior to your departure in October, but I do recommend checking the fares routinely throughout the year from now till then. Don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-243-2724 to speak with one of our Travel Advisors who can assist you with your flights.

  2. I will have a precheck KTN before my flight. Where do I enter it in your reservation page before purchasing the ticket?

    1. Hi Mark,

Travelers who have been cleared for TSA Pre✓™ will have information embedded in the barcode of their boarding pass. Once the boarding pass is scanned at the checkpoint, the passenger may be referred to the TSA Pre✓™ lane. The 11 participating airlines will also print a TSA Pre✓™ indicator directly on the boarding pass. This is automatically assessed at the airport by the TSA and airlines enrolled.
