1. How do I pay for flights with Monthly Payments on CheapAir.com?

We keep things simple for customers and the monthly payments option is no different. When you get to the checkout page in your purchase, you simply select “Monthly Payments” to start.

You’ll then be redirected to Affirm to provide your full name, mobile number, email address, date of birth, and the last four digits of your social security number. You’ll find out if you qualify in real-time. For purchases of $100.00 or more, you will see three loan term options (3, 6, or 12 months), exactly how much your monthly payment will be under each option, and your interest rate (rates from 10-30% APR based on creditworthiness). For purchases of less than $100.00, not all loan term options are available. That’s it! That’s all you need to do to be set up to pay off your purchase in easy, budget-friendly payments.

2. What is Affirm?

We’ve partnered with an innovative financial services company called Affirm to make financing your travel purchases easy and convenient. Working with Affirm allows us to seamlessly bring you the monthly payments option on CheapAir.com. Affirm manages the application, approval, and payment process so we can focus on what we’re good at – being an online travel agency and bringing you affordable airline tickets, accommodation and car rentals! Affirm loans are made by Cross River Bank, a New Jersey state-chartered bank, Member FDIC.

3. How is it different from using a credit card?

Using our monthly payments option couldn’t be more different than using a credit card. You will never have to pay more than the cost you see at checkout with Affirm. Your interest rate, monthly payment amounts, interest cost, and total cost will be clearly displayed at checkout. There are no other fees (hidden or otherwise) to stress over.

CheapAir.com’s monthly payments option is not a revolving line of credit. Should you decide at a future date to buy with monthly payments again, you will make a new request for credit with Affirm on CheapAir.com.

4. Does the credit check impact my credit score?

When you shop on CheapAir.com and apply for Affirm monthly payments for your flight purchase, Affirm only does a “soft” credit check to verify your identity and determine your eligibility for financing. It does not impact your credit score at all. However, for loans requested on or after August 3, 2016, Affirm reports information about your loan and payment activity to Experian (and plans to report to other credit bureaus in the future). Affirm’s goal is to give you the opportunity to build your credit history as you repay your Affirm loans.

5. Does CheapAir.com or Affirm handle payments?

CheapAir is in close partnership with Affirm to bring customers the monthly payments option. If you make a purchase on CheapAir.com using monthly payments, your loan, including all of your monthly payments, will be managed directly by Affirm. You will be able to pay in whatever form best suits you – debit card, bank transfer, or personal check. Affirm will send you text and email reminders so you don’t miss a payment. 6. Is my personal information secure with monthly payments?

Yes, protecting your personal information is very important to us. We took the time to research and vet the right company to bring you this option.     1. Great question Chris. The installments kick in shortly after purchase, and you do not have to have the trip paid off in order to fly.

    1. Hi Sally, Great question. Yes, if you fall too far behind on your payments, Affirm can send your account for collections. However, that is always a last resort and the preference is always to work with anyone having difficulty with their loan terms.   4. Does the payment options work for international flights? I’m trying to book to germany but i don’t see the monthly payment options.

    1. Great question! No, there are no prepayment penalties or fees for paying off your loan early. Also, if you pay off your entire loan before the final due date, you will pay interest only for the period that you borrowed the money.

    1. Hi Sarah, Affirm (our financing partner) performs a ‘soft’ credit check to help verify your identity and determine your eligibility for financing. This ‘soft’ credit check will not affect your credit score. The best way to determine if you can be approved is to choose the “monthly payments” option at checkout. You are not obligated to purchase and will be given the terms of your loan eligibility before check-out.

  5. I noticed in a comment previous. someone asked if they missed a payment would it go to collections, which you replued yes if payments get to far behind. so my question is does the amount approved for the trip have to be paid in full before you actually take the trip?

    1. Hi Gary, Sorry, no. Basically we introduced the option since airline tickets are so pricey and so many people these days don’t have a credit card for large purchases. Intriguing idea, though.

  10. I’ve been working overseas and don’t have an American phone number to receive the confirmation text message from Affirm. What can I do?

    1. Hi Idries, That is a great question but unfortunately I don’t have a great answer for people in your specific situation. Customers must provide a valid U.S. mobile or VoIP number and agree to receive SMS texts, so there unfortunately isn’t a workaround available for you, unless you have a U.S. based VoIP). This is straight from the Affirm site FAQs (https://www.affirm.com/faqs/):

      1) Be 18 years or older (19 years or older in Alabama or if you’re a ward of the state in Nebraska).
      2) Provide a valid U.S. or APO/FPO/DPO home address. Buy with Affirm is not currently available to West Virginia residents.

    1. Hi Enrique, Great question. You do not necessarily have to have one flight paid off before booking another flight, and youdo not have to have a flight paid off before travel but each application is treated independent of the other. You cannot merge payments at this time.

  14. I’m curious what if the traveler is different from the person who is buying the ticket through the payment option? Ex: if a mother is buying a ticket for her family member. Will there be a problem because it’s not the person traveling?

    1. Hi there Teal. Great question. We do support this use case and the person who is taking out the loan needs to enter their information in the Affirm Loan Application. The information of the person paying for the trip should match the information entered for the loan application.

    1. Hi Chasady, Every application is a little bit unique and we do not do the vetting internally. Our financial partner Affirm is in charge of approvals and facilitating the loans. Here is the message from their FAQs “While we strive to offer all creditworthy applicants financing with Affirm, we simply aren’t able to approve every loan application. If we aren’t able to approve your application, we will immediately notify you of our decision and denial reason via a secured message.” If you did not receive a message with the details, can you check your spam or junk email to see if it was caught there?

    1. Hi Sybil, Thanks for asking and the answer is, unfortunately, not at the moment. We have had quite a few inquiries from international customers and will keep you all posted if things should change. At the moment the loans are going through a U.S. based bank.

    1. Hi Tina, there is no requirement for number of tickets purchased. You can apply for however many you need – the person applying for the payment plan assumes the responsibility for paying back the loan.

At that point, the system will take you to the “Affirm” partner site where you will go through a “soft” credit check (that will not impact your credit score) and you’ll find out if you’re eligible.

This options would be completely dependent on our finance partner (Affirm) working with Canadian banks for loans and I am not aware of plans to address this in 2016.           One carry-on bag. Total dimensions may not exceed 45in / 114cm (length + width + height). Length shall not exceed 22in / 56cm, width shall not exceed 14in / 35cm and height shall not exceed 9in / 23cm. The bag must fit in the baggage frames located throughout the check-in area at the airport. A garment bag that fits in the baggage frame will count as your one carry-on bag

          And one personal item such as a purse or laptop bag.

    1. Hi Gerald, Yes, this is a bit of a problem. We cannot book the “monthly payment” tickets over the phone so you would have to book the fares online separately and then apply to pay for them separately. Once you have the tickets, you can call us to link the reservation for you. I would book the Dec 20 ticket and the December 28 ticket as one reservation and then the ticket for the two of you as one reservation (Dec 21 to Dec 27). I would also probably apply for the monthly payment plan on that reservation. It is not clear to me whether you would be approved for both reservations, so I would aim high and see if you can get the pricier itinerary with two travelers approved. In the event you did not get approved for the second ticket, you’d have to pay for that on a credit or debit card, Bitcoin or using Western Union.

  25. I purchased a $300 airline ticket using Affirm a few weeks back. I’ve now learned that there is a hard inquiry on my Experian credit report. According to your website Affirm only does soft inquiries. This is an improper lending disclosure and a violation of law under the the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). I will allow 48 hours from this posting for someone to contact me about how this can be resolved. If not I will file litigation in the Middlesex County District Court for recovery of monetary damages relating to this incident. -Dave

If you’d like to try and finance with Affirm, just go through the selection process for the number of tickets you would like to finance and go through the approval process at checkout. You will have a chance to review terms before you have to commit.

    1. Hi Tom, If you are booking flights for more than 9 people, it is always best to book direct with the airlines. They do offer group pricing.

      You can definitely purchase a ticket for another person. You just need to make sure at the time of booking that you enter your mother’s name and information in as the passenger and when it comes to the payment, you’ll enter your information. Also keep in mind, when you purchase flights with CheapAir.com if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you back the difference in the form of a travel voucher for up to $100 per ticket!     1. Hi William, Affirm (the financial company that we partner with), does do a “soft” credit check but the best way to find out if you qualify is to go through the process of being approved. It will only take 5-10 minutes after you choose tickets and then you will know for sure whether you can qualify.

  49. I recently tried to book a flight using your financing option which is a great option in this day and age, however I ran into an issue which is unfortunate. I recently changed my name to my married name and while completing the process to finance my travel arrangements I used my married name in error, I received the message that my arrangements could not be approved due to the inability to verify my identity and the decision was final. There is no way to call and resolve this issue and now I am unable to make arrangements that I had been looking forward to. Is there anything that I can do to resolve this issue?

    1. Hi Dennis, Great question! No – you definitely pay for the flights starting just after you purchase, but the repayment can (and often does) extend far past flight dates.

  51. Chase credit card for Southwest Airlines sent me a “pre-approval” and when I went to apply I got denied because I had just finished my credit repair process with a credit repair law firm. They suggested I request for increases on my credit cards, which I did. But in doing that was the reason I was denied with Chase. Apparently having too many inquiries is a no-no. What makes this any different than trying to qualify for a travel credit card? Thanks.

  56. sigh….this was a great idea initially, and everything seemed to be going great until I got to the Affirm site to see if I qualified for installments. I gave it my basic info, it recognized me, but as soon as it asked me how often im paid and what i make, my number keys miraclously stopped working, even with number lock on…after 30 minutes of sitting on the screen I couldnt type on, it proceeds to tell me I have been denied because I dont make enough….even though nothing was enterned…and now I cant go back and try again. I am beyond pissed.
