Jackson, New Hampshire

new hampshire romantic trip
Jackson’s main claim to fame – aside from being a ski destination par excellence – is the bevy of romantic bridges that dot the landscape around the town. If you’re looking for a classic New England experience, you won’t be disappointed.

Why It’s a Bargain
Flights into Boston (a two-hour drive from Jackson) are priced nicely from many gateways around the country. Christmas week airfares at date of this publication include $335 nonstop from Los Angeles on Jetblue and $209 from Dallas on American. You’re going to be in New England so to get the full experience you’ll want to stay at a B&B. Sitting by a fire and full breakfast abound – try Whitney’s Inn at Jackson for $136/night or the colonial Inn at Jackson which has rooms for $169/night.

Berlin, Germany

christmas markets berlin
One of our favorite winter holiday experiences in Europe is visiting the various Christmas markets that pop up all over the continent in December. Berlin has over 100 markets to peruse, but our favorite might be the Weihnachtszauber Gendarmenmarkt, which sits in the middle of some of the city’s most iconic architecture. Stroll through the streets with your honey admiring the Brandenburg Gate and pick up some handicrafts from artisans while dining on street food and mulled wine. What’s not to love?

Why It’s a Bargain
Affordable plane tickets from both coasts in the winter are the norm-a recent search turned up flights from New York (JFK) to Berlin for $680 on Norwegian Air and from San Francisco (SFO) to Berlin for $840 on WOW. Accommodations are also in the quite reasonable range. The cozy and funky Hotel Berlin is a 4-star right in the middle of the city and goes for just $83/night. Even the Ritz Carlton Berlin is a relatively reasonable $260/night, with most 4 and 5-star properties priced well under $200.

Sun Valley, Idaho

sun valley, idaho
Sun Valley is a ski and winter sport lovers paradise. There are inexpensive lift tickets, world-class skiing and loads of cozy lodges and craft beer breweries for you to get your après ski fix.

Why It’s a Bargain
One of the best parts about Sun Valley for travelers is the airport’s 20-minute distance from the slopes. Seattle to Sun Valley on United has itineraries for under $300 for Christmas week and from Los Angeles nonstop for just $312. Hotels in Sun Valley are not known for low prices in winter, but there are a few budget options that are hard to beat. The chic and cheap Wood River Inn & Suites has rooms for $135/night with breakfast included and Elkhorn Village has availability for $159/night.

Reykjavik, Iceland

blue lagoon, iceland
Reykjavik is having a big moment and for very good reason. Otherworldly landscapes, the famous Blue Lagoon and great nightlife have put the island country on the map in a big way. Renting a car and exploring the far reaches of Iceland in the winter to see the northern lights is a once-in-a-lifetime experience you’ll be bonding over for years.

Why It’s a Bargain
Icelandair has some pretty tough to beat fares to Reykjavik from the east coast, like a $413 round trip ticket from Boston and Lufthansa has a price of $611 from Los Angeles for holiday dates in December. You may have heard that hotels in Reykjavik are, by and large, not terribly inexpensive. There are a few bargains available – the 4-star Hotel Ork in the Golden Circle has midcentury modern styled rooms available for $150/night and the Park Inn by Radisson Airport offers rooms for $120/night.

Chicago, Illinois

winter in chicago
Chicago is actually a magical place in the winter months, when the city is lit up like a Christmas tree and the need to snuggle up in the cold practically does the romantic work for you. Take your significant other to Millennium Park for an ice skating winter wonderland, and experience the dazzling works of art at the Art Institute, relatively crowd-free. Then you can do some world-class shopping on Miracle Mile and dine at some of the country’s best, most spectacular restaurants with all the money you’re saving on flights and hotels.

Why It’s a Bargain
The airfares in Chicago during the winter months are typically among the lowest in the country, no matter where you’re traveling from. Phoenix to Chicago (ORD) on Frontier from just $250 roundtrip or from Newark for $183 on United. Since the tourist traffic is low, you can also get great bargains for some of the tonier, more romantic hotels in popular, vibrant parts of the city. For instance, the Hyatt Regency Chicago has rooms available for just $149/night and the Sheraton Grand Chicago Magnificent Mile has rooms for an almost unheard of $116/night. Even the Four Seasons is a steal at $237/night.

Up next – warm weather spots for your romantic Christmas plans!
