Secluded Labor Day Getaways

The symbolic last weekend of summer traditionally inspires weekend getaways all around the country. This year might be a little different, but we still think there are amazing outdoor destinations to explore–and the wide open spaces are just a bonus.

Siskiwit Lake, Wisconsin

Isle Royale gets a fraction of the visitors of some of the other more noisy national parks – and this well-kept secret is just the ticket for visitors on the hunt for serenity.

Boulder, Colorado

You’ve got state-of-the-art cycling, hiking, and rock climbing to tempt you, and it’s the kind of town that people move to precisely because of its laid-back vibes. Never too crowded with tourists, the end of the summer is a wonderful time to experience the perfect weather and tons of activities in nature.

Channel Islands National Park, California

channel islands californiaGetting to these five remote islands is no joke – it’s an hour ferry ride to visit. Once you’re there, explore the many hiking trails by foot. There are no phone lines or cars on the islands, but the 150 species of native plants and animals make this a more than fair trade-off. Sea kayaking and scuba diving are an ideal way to explore the kelp forests alongside some of the world’s largest sea caves. You can see the Channel Islands off the coast of California, but don’t let this be the only way you experience their beauty and isolation.

Missoula, Montana

There is fabulous hiking and biking all around Missoula, but you’d be missing out if you didn’t try one of the most meditative and peaceful activities known to the region – fly fishing. When you’re done tackle the two-day challenging technical climb of Grand Teton itself.

Rangeley Lake, Maine

Get ready to relax and kick back in the heart of the North Maine Woods. around these parts – fly fishing. There are a number of outfitters that can hook you up with rental equipment and set you off on your own private fishing adventure.

Convict Lake, California

convict lake californiaFamous for its trout fishing (if not the unfortunate name), Convict Lake sees a lot less tourist traffic than nearby Yosemite. An easy, scenic 3-mile hike around the lake is also a fantastic way to exercise your solitude.

Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

grand teton national parkYellowstone may be the showy, glamorous and somewhat noisy big brother a stone’s throw from Grand Teton, but some of the most breathtaking mountains in the country can be found here with a lot less visitors. Whether your national park jam is hiking, boating or just long, leisurely drives, there is something for every type of nature lover here to adore.

    1. Hi Tracy, visitors into Maine must quarantine for 14 days unless they can show proof of a negative COVID test result taken with 72 hours of departure to Maine. Travelers from Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Vermont are exempt.
