Ohioans take notice: Southwest is beefing up its presence in The Buckeye State. The low-cost carrier is now flying from Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) for the first time.

Southwest flights Akron-Canton airport

On August 12, Southwest commenced three nonstop services from Akron-Canton: Twice daily to Chicago Midway and once daily to Denver. These are the current departure times:=

Akron-Canton to Chicago: 7:25am and 6:45pm

Chicago to Akron-Canton: 9:00am and 4:10pm

Akron-Canton to Denver: 11:25am

Denver to Akron-Canton: 7:25pm

Note: you won’t see any Southwest planes on the ground. Akron-Canton services are operated by AirTran, the subsidiary airline acquired by Southwest in May 2011.

This is a significant expansion for Southwest, which already services Ohio from Cleveland, Dayton, and Columbus. In a separate development, the airline recently commenced nonstop daily flights between Dayton and Denver.

Richard McQueen, CEO of Akron-Canton, told reporters that his airport had been lobbying for Southwest service since 1987. Looks like the hard work has finally paid off.
