Last week we gave you the most popular European destinations this summer so why not share the stateside cities more people are considering for summer vacation? We put our data experts on the case and have come up with the most searched cities for summer 2019. While this list might not contain huge surprises, there’s a reason people want to visit them. Without further ado, here are the most fabulously popular summer destinations on traveler’s minds this year!
10. Honolulu, Hawaii
The islands of Hawaii offers the summer traveler a variety of personalities, depending on the island you choose. For most people, the gateway to Hawaii is Honolulu, which is a mix of big city and laid-back beach style. You can island hop once you’re there for a more romantic and remote visit (Kauai) and spectacular nature/surfing (Maui).
9. Dallas, Texas
If there’s a surprise entry on the list, it just might be Dallas! Turns out that Dallas offers maximum affordability and convenience for summer visitors (with flight costs well below other major metropolitan areas), and a variety of fun and diverting activities for families and couples. Dallas mixes high and low – from down home dining to cutting edge cuisine, and shopping from the vintage to the haute couture.
8. Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona
With temperatures soaring in the summertime (110-degree days are the norm rather than the exception to the rule), you might be wondering why people are interested in flocking to this Sonoran desert spot. Here’s the thing. Scottsdale has some of the top resorts in the country (if not the world) in terms of service and amenities. And in summer, room rates that can top $500-600 in high season drop to $100-200. Flights and car rental prices are also at bargain basement prices. Families should look into staying at a property with a lazy river for maximum relaxation!
7. Chicago, Illinois
Summer in Chicago means outdoor extravaganzas and al fresco dining. With winter weather that keeps people indoors, can you blame locals for wanting to maximize their summer vibes? This is great news for travelers – as the parks are overflowing with family-friendly food, music and cultural festivals. And don’t forget the baseball! The most beloved stadium in baseball is a smack dab in the middle of one of the most vibrant areas of the city. Make sure you take in a game or two while you’re visiting Chi-Town.
6. New York, New York
Hotel and airline prices for New York don’t dip in the summer too much, but what you might be overlooking is the vast number of inexpensive or free activities in which to partake. In the summer months, Central Park overflows with open-air concerts and the legendary Shakespeare in the Park (this years production of “As You Like It” has received raves already). A family trip to the city wouldn’t be complete without a visit to one of the world-class museums like the American Museum of Natural History. Free museums that are must-see stops include the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, the New York Aquarium and the New York Hall of Science.
5. Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Fort Lauderdale used to be a hugely popular destination for spring breakers, but in more recent years the city has been courting a more diverse clientele, including families and couples looking for a romantic getaway. With Orlando and Miami higher-priced Florida vacation destinations, Fort Lauderdale has been able to carve out a spot as a more affordable alternative to your beach vacation. There’s not the plethora of activities to keep you busy if you’re more of a go, go, go type vacationer, but if you want to unplug and relax in Florida should check out Fort Lauderdale!
4. Los Angeles, California
Many people who grew up watching Baywatch or surf movies of the 50’s and 60’s, still think of Los Angeles beaches as the gold standard for summer fun. And they’re not wrong. The beaches in LA, from Santa Monica to Malibu, from Venice to Marina del Rey, all offer their own flavor of laid-back, summer style. L.A has dining options to rival any city in the world, and the lively cultural mashups introduced by the food truck culture and diverse neighborhoods, makes for a thoroughly fascinating dining landscape. Hotel rooms are plentiful, and you can get a deal as long as you’re willing to stay in one of the suburbs. A beachfront hotel will cost you quite a bit more.
3. Las Vegas, Nevada
Sin City is a perennial favorite for many reasons. Flights and accommodation are almost always inexpensive, even more so in the summer when temperatures in the Nevada desert soar. Of course, gambling is still in the number one pastime, but many of the hotels on the strip have undergone major renovations and have pool complexes and spas to rival the top resorts in the country. You can spend your days lounging by the pool or shopping, and nights dancing at the clubs, taking in a show or playing the tables. Vegas even has activities for the kiddos – visiting the Adventuredome Theme Park, VooDoo Zipline and Red Rock Canyon National Park are top picks for families.
2. Orlando, Florida
To absolutely no one’s surprise, Orlando is a top vacation destination for families. Flights [link] and accommodation are pretty affordable for Orlando – but you can spend a fortune if you plan on spending the bulk of your time at Disney World and Universal Orlando (as most people do). Luckily, there are affordable activities in Orlando to supplement your theme park plans. If you keep an open mind, there’s much to do in Orlando to occupy your time and at every price point – from frugal to luxury budgets!
1. Miami, Florida
Miami is officially the most searched destination on CheapAir.com for summer flights. And no wonder! Miami is a cosmopolitan, vibrant city with a glamorous nightlife scene and fab beaches. There’s a lot more to Miami than pricey South Beach, though summer visitors usually want to concentrate their time around the beach locations! If you’re on a budget, just getting out of South Beach can save you a ton of money on accommodation, unless you have the budget to splash out a bit.
