With Independence Day just around the corner, it’s time for us to make our picks for the most spectacular fireworks celebrations around the country. It wasn’t easy, but we think we’ve narrowed it down to the best of the best!
Celebrate Freedom! The National Mall
It will probably come as no surprise that our nation’s capital is home to some inspiring fireworks displays on the National Mall, all brought to you by the National Parks Service. The entire day is filled with celebrations, including a patriotic parade down Constitution Avenue, a concert headlined by Carole King, Vanessa Williams, the National Symphony and a special appearance by the Muppets! The best viewing areas for fireworks on the Mall will be the steps of the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials (but good luck scoring a seat!) More good spots are at the Washington Monument and the Reflecting Pool.
New York, New York
The Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks
If bigger is better, look no further than New York City’s premiere fireworks event. It’s touted as the biggest display in the country, with 2019’s celebration headlined by country superstar Brad Paisley. This year, the show will launch more than 70,000 pyrotechnic displays from 4 barges in the East River as well as from the Brooklyn Bridge itself! It will take a team of more than 60 technicians 12 days to set it all up!
Let Freedom Sing! 4th of July
People go all out for Independence Day in Nashville – with upwards of 200,000 people expected to turn out in 2019. Now, Nashville likes a good game of one-upmanship and the city claims to have “out-displayed” New York in recent years. We’ll let you be the judge. A complete list of “best places to view” the free show is on the website, and a few outdoor venues around town will also have video screens for remote viewing.
Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular!
Don’t think that the Boston Pops are planning a stodgy ole’ party. This year. Queen Latifah is there to spice things up! An impressive flyover by the 104th Fighter Wing out of Barnes Air National Guard Base kicks off the festivities, with a concert following featuring the Queen and Arlo Guthrie. The fireworks will kick off at 10:30pm, so if you’re not a night owl, this one might not be for you! Come for the impressive music, stay for the incredible fireworks! Screens along the Charles River will be erected so everyone in town has a great view.
San Diego, California
Big Bay Boom
Let’s head over to the west coast to Big Bay Boom! No – it’s not a joke, this is the alliterative name chosen for the Independence Day celebration which is – as stated – over San Diego Bay. The largest fireworks in southern California kicks off at 9 pm from 4 barges, and it’s a kick-back casual, neighborly event as only SoCal can do. Bring your lawn chair and friends to stake your spot on Shelter Island, Harbor Island, the Embarcadero and the Coronado Ferry Landing (among other spots). The best viewing is from the harbor itself, so make friends with someone who has a boat in the marina for a magical perch.
