Are you dreaming of summer vacation and equally excited to save on summer travel? Well, then we have some great news for you!
Over the last few days we’ve poured through hundreds of thousands of summer airfares with one goal in mind: helping you find the best airfares for your trip. Summer airfares will not be cheap, but the good news is with a little flexibility and forethought, you can find real savings.
The time frame in which you travel matters. For example, if you travel later in the summer season, you’re more likely to get a better airfare. Don’t wait too long to buy those flights, though, as the lower airfares tend to sell out and prices will go up.
The day of week you fly matters too. The cheapest days to fly this summer are Tuesday and Wednesday, netting you an average savings of $77 and $78 respectively compared to flying on a Sunday (which is the most expensive day to fly).
Here’s a chart of each travel day, including the average lowest airfare for domestic travel, and how much (on average) you’ll save by traveling on that day. While these trends are derived from an analysis of domestic flights, you can also follow this advice to save on international flights.
How can you apply our research to save on summer airfares? Instead of a taking a weeklong trip Sunday to Sunday, think about Saturday to Saturday, or return on a Monday. If you do this, you and your family can save hundreds of dollars on summer flights, which frees you up to splash out on accommodation, dining and other activities. Saving money to enhance your vacation? Sounds like a no brainer.
