We found the cheapest days to fly this summer

We’ve sifted through hundreds of thousands of summer airfares with one goal in mind: helping you find the best airfares for your trip. Summer airfares will not be cheap, but the good news is with a little flexibility and forethought, you can find real savings. Here are some the cheapest days we’ve found this summer.

  • June 4, 2024: The least expensive day to travel this month is the first Tuesday. We recommend shopping early. June is popular with families and competition for the best fares will be fierce!
  • June 12, 2024: If you fly any Wednesday in June, you can save $87 on average than flying on Sunday.
  • July 4, 2024: Independence Day offers great value in 2024, mainly because it falls on a Thursday this year. Of course, that means that the weekend before and after the 4th are some of the most expensive flight days of the summer.
  • July 7, 2024: The first Sunday in July is the most expensive day to fly this summer. If you’re traveling for the 4th start flight shopping early!
  • July 23, 2024: The lowest-cost flight day to travel this month is Tuesday. Mid-week flights almost always offer the best value for Economy travelers.
  • August 4, 2024: The entire month of August is a better priced month for summer flights, relative to June and July. But this year, flight prices in August are up 33% from last year. Shop early to avoid even higher prices.
  • August 7, 2024: The first Wednesday in the month offers the best value airline ticket price for budget travelers. You can save $72 on average for any mid-week flight rather than flying on a Sunday.
  • August 28, 2024: The last Wednesday of August is the best-priced day to fly all month.
  • September 15, 2024: This is the most expensive flight day of September – and big surprise – it’s a Sunday. If you can avoid a Sunday flight, it will almost always save you some cash.
  • September 17, 2024: This is the best-priced flight day of the entire summer. Pushing a summer trip to the end of the season offers excellent value.

Late summer has better priced airfare

The time frame in which you travel matters. For example, if you travel later in the summer season, you’re more likely to get a better airfare. This year, we’ve tracked airfares decreasing just after the July 4th holiday, so if you want to spend a few less bucks on your vacation, aim for mid-July into September when airfares are a little cheaper. Don’t wait too long to buy those flights, though, as the lower airfares tend to sell out and prices will go up.

Fly mid-week for the better priced airfares this summer

The day of week you fly matters too. The cheapest days to fly this summer are Tuesday and Wednesday, compared to flying on a Sunday (which is the most expensive day to fly).

Here’s a chart of each travel day, including the average lowest airfare for domestic travel, and how much (on average) you’ll save by traveling on that day. While these trends are derived from an analysis of domestic flights, you can also follow this advice to save on international flights.
