Storms in the Midwest and Northeast threaten flight disruptions. Winter Storm Draco began over the Rocky Mountains but is heading east to the plane states of Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, Kansas and Nebraska. States in the Northeast impacted include New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Blizzard conditions could possibly cause major delays across the country, especially considering that Chicago and Detroit airports are in the storm’s path and are used as hubs for several major airlines. As is usual protocol, many airlines are offering flexible rebooking options to help alleviate travel stress.
If you are set to travel in the next few days we strongly recommend checking your flight status for delays or cancellations. If you are traveling over the Midwest from December 19 through the December 21 you may qualify for a free itinerary change. Please use our airline travel advisory chart below to see if the airline you are flying is offering a travel waiver.
As a general rule of thumb, you may be able to get a travel waiver if:
1. Your flight is canceled. In this case, you have the option of obtaining a full refund.
2. You would like to reschedule your trip. You can do so without having to pay any penalty, although in some cases you may have to pay a difference in fare if you’re changing to a more expensive itinerary.
Though most airlines are offering postponing flights, they are only allowing postponements within days. Please keep in mind it is the holiday travel season and many flights are already near capacity, limiting rebooking options.
