How far in advance should I book my flight? Here’s what the numbers say

By Jeff Klee, CEO of CheapAir.com

For airfare geeks like us, one of the exciting things about the start of the year is that you can finally start looking at a complete set of flight data that includes a full 365 days.  In 2012, our servers compiled a whopping 560,611,868 fare search records and we spent the first week of 2013 combing through that data, trying to find an answer to the the most frequently asked of all frequently-asked-questions: how far in advance should I book my flight?

Well, we sort of have an answer. It’s 49 days. 7 weeks in advance. But we have to qualify it by saying “on average“.

Of course, a million caveats apply and this is all based on averages from a year’s worth of dates in over 11,000 purely domestic markets. For any given flight, the actual best time to buy might vary, depending on the market, the time of year, the day of week, and other factors (more on that below). But if you’re looking for a short answer and a simple number, 7 weeks is the best one we’ve got, based on the 560 million searches we analyzed.

Not surprisingly, as you can see from the graph below, the worst day to buy a ticket was the day before the flight, and 2 days in advance was the second worst, 3 days in advance the third worst, etc. until you get to 11 days out. After that, the next worst day to buy was actually a tie between 208, 209, and 210 days in advance — which are the furthest out we went with this analysis.

What does this all mean? The simple fact is that the way to get the worst airfare last year was, in most cases, to buy your ticket really late or really early.

If you look at the trend line beginning at 7 months out, you’ll see fares started out high and steadily decreased as you got closer to a flight date, hitting rock bottom at around 7 weeks in advance. At that point, they started to increase a tiny bit, but they stayed pretty steady until about 1 month out. Then they started to spike pretty dramatically.

Some  other interesting notes:

– The 7 weeks in advance was based on domestic fare data only. For international flights, it was still not good to buy too early or too late, but the sweet spot there was about 11-12 weeks in advance. (The exact low point was 81 days).

– For extremely busy travel periods like holidays, buying further out was usually better. For Thanksgiving 2012, for example, the optimal day to buy was, on average, 96 days before a flight. That’s almost 14 weeks in advance.

– Contrary to what many travel “experts” have claimed, no particular day of the week was a consistently less expensive day to buy tickets in 2012. It has become somewhat of an urban legend that it’s cheaper to buy tickets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. While it’s true that airlines frequently publish system-wide sales on those days, it’s also true that there are large numbers of smaller scale, unpublished sales on other days. Add it all up, and we find that no one day was significantly better than any other. (Keep in mind, we’re talking about when to buy here; day of the week absolutely makes a difference when it comes to what day to fly, with Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays usually being the lease expensive for trips within the U.S.)

– Although the averages we mentioned are real, for practical purposes, its best to take this information as a guideline and not a rule. When you drill down deeper into the data, you see a lot of variation from market and trip to trip. For instance,  even though on average 7 weeks in advance was the best time to book, we found plenty of  combinations of origin, destination, departure, and return dates where the best fare was actually found 1 day before the flight (like L.A. to Tokyo on October 3, returning October 10). We also found a bunch of examples where the best day to book was the day the flight opened for sale, 331 days in advance. Austin to Auckland December 19th through December 26th was one such example. The lesson is that there continues to be an unpredictable element to airfare pricing which, if you’ll indulge a shameless plug, is what makes CheapAir.com’s unique Price Drop Payback offer so valuable.

    1. Hi Diane, for summer travel we suggest you start keeping an eye on airfares now, so that you have a good idea when airfares rise and fall. Having this information will help you be prepared to strike when there is a good sale or fare out there.

      1. Hi there,

I am leaving from London to miami on the 1st of sept till the 10th of this year and was wondering when to book this at a reasonable price.
I look forward to hearing from you.

        Kind regards
        Azzie

        1. Hi Azzie,

Now is a good time to purchase since the cheapest fares are under $1000, which for the end of summer is a reasonable price. Plus, when you purchase on CheapAir.com, you are automatically enrolled in our Price Drop Payback program where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! You don’t want to put off purchasing too much longer as prices will rise the closer it gets to your date of travel. Please us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

        1. Hi John,

For flights in May 2014, you still have plenty of time. We found about 11-12 weeks in advance to be the sweet spot for international flights, so I’d suggest buying around end of January into early February. If you need any assistance with finding flights, please let us know.

        2. Ive been comparing prices for Philippines trip since July. The cheapest I found as of now is $1303 (ORD to CRK). Departure is last week of January 2014. If it is better to purchase ticket 11-12 weeks prior, how low can this price be?

          1. Hi Chat,

In our findings, purchasing international was generally best about 11-12 weeks prior however that’s not to say that you should wait exactly till 11-12 weeks to buy your flight. The price you’re mentioning isn’t a bad price. I’d suggest to continue to monitor the fare more and see if the price drops any or if it increases. If you’re only seeing the costs increasing, then you should buy as soon as possible… but if you’re seeing the costs drop, then that can be a sign that they may drop more. It all depends on how many people are buy that route and when they are buying. Usually with international travel, you don’t want to wait too long, so for a flight in January, I’d recommend making sure you’ve purchased your flight about 3 months in advance. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

      2. We are traveling to Paris on December 27th 2013 and coming back January 5th 2013 and need to purchase our tickets. When is the best time to purchase our tickets? I was going to purchase them on Tuesday August 6th for 1260 round trip departing from Fresno California, but waited today Wednesday August 7th 2013 and the tickets jumped to 1565. Should I wait to book or book it now?

        1. Hi Angelica,

Airfares fluctuate daily so its important to know when you see a flight at a price you like, you should buy it when you have the chance. Currently airfares are starting at around $1310 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. (To book this, you would need to call and speak with one of our Travel Advisors.) Since we’re still about 4 and half months out from your departure, I’d suggest to continue to monitor the fares. It’s best the check airfares earlier in the week, like on Tuesday or early Wednesday. (As you mentioned Tuesday was cheaper when you checked.) Ultimately, I would be prepared to buy sooner than later, you don’t want to wait till the last minute as fares will be a lot higher at that time. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

      3. Hey, I am looking to book a flight roundtrip from Chicago to Beijing. I would leave Dec 20 and return either Jan 4th or 5th. When do you think would be the best time to book my flight?

        Thanks!

        1. Hi Daniel,

I’d suggest booking now. Flight during the holiday season are going to be expensive due to the peak travel season, so don’t delay booking your flights. Definitely let us know if you need any help with finding flight. We’re here to assist you if you need it.

      4. Hi there,
Im planning on heading to Hawaii for about 5-7 days in November. When would be the perfect time to book my flight? Ive started looking since the beginning of the year and they’re around $500 -$600. I dont want to t overly excited and miss out on a deal later on

        1. Hi Olivia,

For flights to Hawaii in November, booking about 12 – 15 weeks out from your departure wouldn’t be a bad idea. Since I’m not sure where you’re departing from or which destination for Hawaii you’re looking for, it’s difficult for me to know whether the price you’re seeing now is a good deal or not. What I would advise is to continue to monitor the fares for a few weeks to see if the pricing changes. If you’re not seeing any changes, then I’d suggest to keep waiting. If you’re noticing the pricing increasing, then you might want to purchase. Remember, when purchasing flights on CheapAir.com, you can automatically take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program where if the price for the same flight decreases, we’ll give you a credit for that amount, valid up to $100. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

      5. We are planning to go to Orlando from the Dominican Republic on May this year but the prices are up at the moment, any suggestions on that?

        1. Hi Vera, We are getting close to May. If the prices seem to be climbing you should definitely book now. Prices rarely go back down once they start to rise. Good luck with your search!

      6. I’m traveling in April the 14th to be exact with southwest should I purchase now I was told mayb February the tickets will go down I’m going to vegas

        1. Hi Keeli, to be honest there are usually cheap fares to Vegas from most major markets so I think it’s fair to wait a bit longer. If you are traveling from a smaller airport maybe don;t wait too long, but if you are planning to fly to Vegas from any major city – deals do come up. The one caveat would be if there was something major going on in Vegas over the period you plan to go – a big boxing match or a musical event. Good luck to you.

    2. We are planning a trip to NYC this summer with our granddaughter, would June, July or August be a better time for more reasonable prices?

      1. Hi Jan,

New York City is a major domestic and international tourist destination, so flights to New York City are very popular no matter which month you’re going. I’d recommend to search about 8 to 10 weeks out to get a good sense of prices. Just get a feel for the market so you know when the fares drop. As always, let us know if you need any assistance. Our travel advisors are here to assist you if you need it.

  1. GREAT information! Thank you.
Especially re: international travel, which is my next trip.
The past few years, I’ve booked all trips, and most of my rental cars, through CheapAir — and been satisfied.

  2. Thanks for this article! I’ve never read anything like this with so much recent data providing the source for the analysis.

  3. I want to go to Paris in November which is not a peak time. I would love to buy tickets for my grandkids to go as well but serioiusly, what is the cheapest airfare from ORD to Paris, France that I can expect to see and when??? Thank you.

    1. Rebecca, the fact that you are going in the off season, November, is great. That should help you to get a lower fare and reduce the sense of urgency to buy right away. You can afford to wait so I would start checking fares, and check pretty regularly and wait for a good deal. If you can fly midweek (Monday through Thursday) in both directions, you’ll get the best fare. I would look for something in the $800 range. That’s a good fare for Paris is November, assuming it includes all taxes and fees (which all the fares you say on our site do).

  4. The information you provided is very useful and I will use it in the future. I notice that trips between Chicago and Las Vegas have skyrocketed within the past few years. Any suggestions on finding good deals?

    1. Crystal, flights to Las Vegas can be extremely volatile and the day of the week you fly often makes a really big difference. If at all possible, try to schedule your trip to fly on Tuesdays or Wednesdays — those days are less crowded and generally less expensive. The opposite is true of Fridays and Mondays, so avoid those days if you can.

    1. Hi Tim,

Great question. Yes, typically it is cheaper to fly on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Saturday since there tends to be less travelers on those days than the others. Airlines also tend to release sale fares on Tuesday so that’s a great time to look for flights. Let us know if you need any assistance, we’re here to help.

    1. WD, it would be helpful to start checking right away, but you don’t necessarily want to buy just yet. Check fares every week or so to get a feel for the market. Hopefully, at some point you’ll catch a good sale and you’ll see fares come down. If you’re traveling on Fridays or Sundays, the flights are likely to fill up faster so that would mean it’s more important to book on the earlier side. On the other hand, if you can fly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, which are frequently the cheapest days, you can afford to be a little more patient.

  5. Thanks for the information. We are traveling to Europe this May and I would like to receive feedback as to whether or not it is more cost effective to buy one way tickets to and from the cities closest to where we will be staying at the time, or simply buy a round trip ticket to and from the same location.
    Any guidance would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Matthew, great question, this comes up a lot. For travel to Europe, you do not want to buy one way tickets for each direction. That will usually cost you more than double what it would otherwise be. However, you can purchase what’s called an “open jaw” ticket where you buy one ticket with a routing like New York to London going, Paris to New York coming back. To do this on our site, just click the “Multiple Destinations” link on our home page. When you buy a ticket like this, you essentially pay the average of the fares to the two cities you are going to. That’s usually a better way to go than having to worry about traveling back to the city you flew into in order to make your flight home.

  6. Thank you for this article. Any suggestions for when to search for San Diego to Warsaw in August or September? Any airline suggestions? Also would welcome an article on how to cope with loooooong flights (this trip looks like it’s 16-25 hrs. with two stops). Thank you!

    1. Hi Kinney – thanks for taking the time to comment. You have a lot of time until September and your Warsaw trip rolls around, but I would still just start keeping an eye on fares in about a month or two. Just get a feel for the market so you know when the fares drop. You may want to also be open to leaving from other airports (LAX perhaps) as they might offer better fares than San Diego if you can be flexible. And thanks for your blog post suggestion, we can certainly write about that for you.

  7. I am planning a trip to Las Vegas for my son’s 21st birthday. We are considering June 24-28. I was wondering if 7 weeks is the best time for that type of travel also?

    1. Jacob, unfortunately there are no hard-and-fast rules so our suggestion is always to start checking fares as soon as possible. Check regularly, at least once a week, and be ready to buy if you see fares drop, because air fare sales are generally very short-lived (usually 24-72 hours). The more flexible you are on your flights and dates, the more you can afford to be patient, but if you have exact flights that you want to be be on I would recommend booking even earlier than the 7 week guideline because Vegas flights tend to book up more quickly than other destinations.

  8. This was a great and informative article. Thanks so much. It will make my travel decisions that much easier as I am hoping to be “in the air” sometime this summer!…yay

  9. I hv used cheapo air for travel to Grenada for xmas. I want to go back July 24th what is the best time to buy my ticket..please help

    1. Hi Tricia,

Airlines release sales for international flights earlier than domestic flights, so it is wise to start your shopping four months ahead of time if traveling outside the U.S. Just be cautious about buying too far in advance as sales often reach their peak four to eight weeks ahead of travel. As always, you can purchase flights with confidence on CheapAir.com and take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program.

    1. Hi Kelly,

The more flexible you are on your flights and dates, the better your chances are for finding the cheapest flights. I’d recommend to plan to visit during Cancun’s off-season. This extends from May through October. During this time, everything from hotels to excursions to airfare will be at the cheapest price of the year. The only drawback is it also coincides with Cancun’s hurricane season, which stretches from July to the end of October. Check for fares about 3 to 4 months out to get a sense of pricing and monitor the flights each week. I would look for something in the $500 range. As always, let us know if you need any assistance.

    1. Hi Connie,

For international travel it is wise to start your shopping about three to four months ahead of time to get a good sense of the fares and pricing. Let us know if you need any assistance.

    1. Hi Miki,

Ixtapa is an amazing destination. I’d recommend to search for flights about 3 to 4 months out. The more flexible you are on your flights and dates, the better your chances are for getting the cheapest fares. November is the beginning of the peak travel season. Airlines release sales for international flights earlier than domestic flights, so it is wise to start your shopping months ahead of time if traveling outside the U.S. Let us know if you need any assistance. We’re here to help.

  10. Thank you for all this information! Very helpful. 7 of us will be flying to Puerto Vallarta the beginning of November and hope to find the best deal!

  11. My husband and I will be going to Jackson Hole,Wyoming in Aug. When is a good time to start looking for flights? Thank you!

    1. Hi Sherry,

We recommend searching for flights about 2 to 3 months out. That way you can get a sense of prices. Fares in the $400’s are a good range to look for. Let us know if you need any assistance, we’re here to help if you need it.

      1. Hi! I’m wondering about flights from ATL to JAC – are direct flights non-existent, or are they just rare & must be purchased early? Thank you!

        1. Hi Rebekah,

Unfortunately there are no non-stop flights from ATL to JAC. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help.

      2. Sherry, We are traveling from detroit to ft. lauderdale in March 2 and returning on March 10, 2014. When should I start looking for planefare? want to travel on delta

        1. Hi Larry,

For flights from Detroit to Ft. Lauderdale for your dates, you still have plenty of time to purchase. I would suggest purchasing after the New Year would be a good time, but I’d caution to check fares each week in December to see what the prices are like. Currently for your dates, we’re finding flights with Delta Airlines starting at around $300 per person. There’s still plenty of time from now and then for an airfare sale, so I’d suggest to continue to monitor the flights. If you need any help with finding flights, please call us at 1-800-243-2724 to speak with one of our Travel Advisors.

    1. Hi Felicia,

Disney World is so fun! I would recommend to start searching for flights in mid April, about 7 to 8 weeks out from June. Let us know if you need any help, we’d be happy to assist you.

      1. Hello! We are planning to go to Philippines Dec. 25 from JFK when is the best time to buy a ticket? Thanks a lot tempted to buy now.

        1. Hi Florabel,

Since you’re planning to travel internationally on December 25, we recommend purchasing your flights further in advance than normal due to the busy holiday travel season. We’re finding that for busy holiday travel, booking 14-16 weeks in advance is around the best time to buy. So you should aim to buy around sometime in August. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. Our travel advisors are here to assist you if you need it.

          1. Me and my friend are hoping to go to Philippines, leave in toronto mid nov to bfore january 6, when is the best time to buy tickets? and what is the usual prices for that time?

            Thank you very much!

    2. Hi. I just wanted to make sure i have this correct. My daugter and I are planning a trip from Wisconsin to London for the third week in June. You write one should buy tickets three to four MONTHS in advance for savings?
      Any help would be great!
      Thanks.

      1. Hi Dan,

Sounds like a wonderful trip planned. For international flights, we’re finding that purchasing about 11-12 weeks in advance is the best time to buy. We do recommend that you start checking airfares to get familiar with the pricing. If you see the fare drop, buy it. As always, you can contact us if you need any help finding flights. We’re here to help.

  12. Hi,

My husband and I are planning a trip from EWR to Punta Cana, DR Feb. 14-17 and Orlando Mar 23-26 from Orlando to South Carolina Mar 26-29. When is the best time to purchase airfare for this trip? I know DR is a bit last minute, but do you think we’ll get good pricing on non-stop flight at this point. Please advise.

    Thank you,
    LadyNiqua

    1. Hi LadyNiqua,

For travel in February, you should be searching for flights now. Same with your trip to Orlando and South Carolina. You can do a multi-leg flight search on our website or you can give us a call at 1-800-243-2724 to work with one of our travel advisors.

  13. we’re travelling to Chicago – Aruba last week in July Sat thru Sun would our best bet be to book now since we are locked into the dates? If so, should we be shooting for a Tues or before a Tues before rates likely change (upwards?) Appreciate the article and posting responses – very helpful

    1. Hi David,

July is 5 months away, so you have some time to still search for fares to get a good sense of pricing. You’ll want to look for fares in the $400’s, which is a pretty good price for flights from Chicago to Aruba. I would definitely recommend checking fares on Tuesday’s as airlines tend to release their sale fares on that day. As always, I would recommend purchasing on CheapAir.com to take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program. Let us know if you need any assistance, we’re here to help you.

    1. Hi Kimber,

Maui in August is considered peak season for Hawaii, so I would recommend searching for flights a little further out at about 10 to 11 weeks from August. Make sure to purchase online with CheapAir.com so you can take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program. Let us know if you need any help!

    1. Hi Joyce,

I would recommend to start searching airfares about 3 months out from September. September is at the end of the low season for Cabo, so it’s a great time to go since prices can be pretty cheap compared to other times of the year. Be sure to let us know if you have any questions or need help getting your flights.

    1. Hi Joyce,

Thanks for providing your departure city as that really helps us pin point the price range you’ll want to look for. Fares in the $400’s, sometimes high $300’s are what you’ll want to look for. As always, let us know if you need assistance.

    1. Hi Leslie,

From where are you departing from? Since you’re looking for flights at the end of March, I would recommend searching each week till mid February since that’s about 7 weeks from March 29th. Another tip is to be flexible with your dates. If you can depart on Wednesday, March 27 or Thursday, March 28 that may be a little cheaper for you. Let us know if you need assistance, we’re here to help you.

    1. Hi Pam,

Sounds like a great summer trip. I would recommend searching for flights about 8 to 9 weeks out from July. That should provide a good sense of the pricing. Our data shows that 7 weeks is the optimum time to buy. We’re happy to help you if you need it. Just let us know.

  14. Will travel to Los Angeles for the week including July 4. Does the 7-week out suggestion still work for
that holiday period? We’re traveling from Boston,MA or Providence, RI.
And the Tue, Wed, Sat suggestion? We are somewhat flexible in days to travel.
    Thanks, Cathy

    1. Hi Catherine,

Being flexible with your dates is always the best way to get the cheapest airfares. For the best deals you should depart before the holiday and return mid-week. The 7 weeks is still a valid, although I would probably adjust it by a week or two earlier just to get a good sense of prices. Fares from BOS to LAX that are in the $300 to $400 range are great. I would definitely avoid waiting since prices will increase the closer it gets to the holiday. Make sure to buy before June and be sure to contact us if you need any help. Our travel advisors are here to assist you if you need it.

  15. Does the length of the visit make a difference in the price of the ticket? We are going round trip from Tampa to Panama, April 4, 2013 and we usually stay 10 days when we travel like this. When would be the best time to order the tickets and does it matter how long we will be staying?

    1. Hi Kim,

Great question! I would recommend searching for flights in early February. The length of your stay shouldn’t effect the ticket cost for your trip, however airfares sometimes have a minimum and maximum length of stay for which the fare qualifies. This is filtered when you enter your dates for travel, so if you’re looking to stay a month and there’s a maximum day restriction under a month then that fare won’t come up in the results. Let us know if you need any assistance in finding your flights.

    2. Hi,

We are planning a mid-July, two week trip from Richmond, VA to Paris, France. And then, a return flight from Barcelona (train from Paris to Barcelona) back to Richmond.

      Two questions:
      1) When’s the best time to book the tickets? I assume we should analyze flights 3-4 months in advance.

      2) If Paris is considered an expensive airport to fly into, what other smaller, less expensive airports should we consider that might require no more than 2 hr train ride to Paris?

      Thanks

      1. Hi Brian,

You’re absolutely correct in searching about 3-4 months prior to your departure. Although I would recommend to monitor fares now, just to get a good sense of pricing. Our multi-leg trip search allows you to find flights from Richmond to Paris and back from Barcelona to Richmond. Keep in mind, all flights from Richmond, VA to Paris, France and back from Barcelona require a connection. Unfortunately, Charles De Gaulle is your best option to fly into Paris, France since it’s the only international airport in the area. It is a very busy airport, and is a 30-50 minutes ride to Paris (depending on traffic). Let us know if you need any assistance with your trip.

  16. This article is really quite enlightening, is your 7 weeks for local flights and 11-12 weeks for International flights also applicable to flights from outside the US particularly Africa to US routes ( the 11-12 weeks rule) in the summer?

    1. Hi Gbemi,

For international routes, we recommend searching about 4 months out to get a sense of the fares. Check them each week and buy if you see the price drops. I would avoid waiting till 1 month out from your departure since fares will only get higher the closer it gets to your departure date. Let us know if you need any help.

  17. Aloha, I would like to bring fly my grandson back home from Texas, Home is Hawaii, for the summer. I am looking at late May or early June til August When would it be the best time to purchase tickets. I have been looking at east 2 times a week?

    1. Hi Lisa,

You’re definitely doing the right thing by checking the fares each week. We’re finding that 7 weeks is the optimum time to buy, but Hawaii is a popular destination during the summer and fares can reach their peak during that time. For that reason, you may want to try about 8 to 9 weeks out. You can shop and purchase with confidence and take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program if the fare drops after you buy.

    1. Hi King,

What an awesome trip! I would recommend searching in late February or early March. It’s always wise to buy international flights a couple months prior to your departure. Definitely let us know if you need any assistance, we’re here to help.

    1. Hi Miriam,

We’re finding that 7 weeks is the optimum time to buy for domestic flights. Our travel advisors are here to assist you if you need any help searching for flights.

  18. My family is planning a trip in July to Kansas City. I would need to purchase 6 nonstop tickets (nonstop because of kids). How far in advance should I purchase these tickets? Does it need to be done earlier because of the amount of tickets?

    1. Shauna, yes the combination of wanting nonstop flights and needing 6 tickets on the same plane does make it advisable to book earlier than you normally would. You are also traveling during the peak season. The good news is you still have some time, but I would start monitoring fares and try to firm things up at least a few months in advance.

  19. Hi,

Thanks so much for your article. My husband and I are taking a cruise from Venice to Barcelona, flying out of Myrtle Beach, so our flight days don’t really leave wiggle room, Oct. 19 – Nov. 2. I’ve never been to Italy before or booked a multi-city flight before, and I’m seeing fares around $1211. I don’t know if this is a decent price or not, I have nothing to compare it to. I’m really sitting the fence about when to book. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    1. Sheena, cruises are tough because, like you said, you don’t normally have much wiggle room and the timing of the cruise dictates which flights you can take. When you are leaving from a smaller city like Myrtle Beach, you don’t have too many options to begin with. So I would be inclined to book fairly soon. $1211 is not the best deal anyone’s ever gotten, but it’s not a bad fare either (if it includes all taxes, which it does if you saw it on our site). And if you’ve already booked a cruise, the timing is pretty critical so you probably don’t want to take a chance of having flights book up and prices go through the roof. I would check with the cruise line, though, to see if they can offer airfare. Although air fare through the cruise lines are normally more expensive, once in a while you get a deal. The other suggestion I would have, if you do book soon, is to reconfirm your flight schedule with the airline (or us, if you buy through us) every month. The one problem with booking far in advance is that airlines can change their schedules and when your itinerary is very time sensitive because you have to catch a ship, that could be a problem. If this does happen, as long as you become aware of it far enough in advance, it should be no problem to rectify if the schedule change causes any problems.

  20. Do you believe that this would be applicable to all inclusive vacation packages as well, or are the rates for those flights determined by the particular provider? I am interested in an all inclusive package for summer but can’t wait until the last minute sales are posted.

    1. Steffanie, if you’re talking about a package that includes air + hotel, there is usually less volatility there. That doesn’t mean package rates never fluctuate, they definitely do, but different dynamic apply and often the hotel rate is the driver of the package rate not the airfare (although it depends where you are going). We don’t sell all inclusive vacation packages on our site and, therefore, we don’t have data available to give you good advice. Generally speaking, though, if you are going to a popular place at a popular time it is more important to book early.

  21. Hi,
I am looking at going to Europe this summer, for a couple of months. I want to leave sometime at the end of may, or early june, and then come back around 2 months later. I want to fly out of Salt Lake, and I am willing to fly into really any airport in Europe. So my question is, when do you think I will see the best fares? I was checking earlier in the week, and I saw a flight from SLC to Istanbul for $894, but when I checked again today, the prices were up to $1,700.. So, do you think the prices are going to go back down? I’m just not sure if I should wait longer to see if the prices go down, since price is the most important factor to me. Thanks for your time!

    1. Also: I read in the post that 81 days out is the lowpoint, so based off of that, the prices should go down. But I was just a little concerned by the sudden spike in prices this weekend. It actually wasnt just the flight to Istanbul that went up. The flights on most of the routes I checked had dramatic changes in price since earlier in the week. Do you think that is just because it is a weekend? Thanks again for your time.

    2. Colin, that’s great that you’re willing to fly into any airport in Europe. That will help a lot. Istanbul is one of the more expensive options. To save money, try a larger city where there is more competition like London, Paris, Madrid, or Frankfurt. Also, check multiple different travel dates if you can because sometimes the lowest fare is sold out on one day but available on another. Finally, if leaving earlier in May is an option, flights departing in the first two weeks are generally less expensive to Europe than flights later in the month or in June. Hope this helps!

  22. Ok, that makes sense. Thank you for your answer. That helps a lot! One last question: Do you think the prices on flights to europe will go back down? I know there is no absolute right answer, but I just want your opinion. Also, When would you suggest I book/what is a good price I should look for? Thanks again!

  23. My friend and I will be traveling to Chania Crete soon. We plan on flying out of Nashville TN on April 11 and returning on April 23. I have been busy checking the best prices for the last several days, but cannot find any flight schedules, through Cheapair, for the above dates. We need for our connecting flight, on (April 12) from Athens to Chania to be at 4:00 PM, as we will be meeting up with other friends, at the Athens airport and traveling together, to Chania. We are planning on booking our flights sometime tomorrow (January 22). Can Cheapair help us find a good airfare for those dates. If so, please give us a phone number and the name of one of your agents, that we can speak to, to book our reservations, through Cheapair, over the phone. Thanking you ahead of time for your help!

    1. Hi Carol,

Thank you for checking with CheapAir.com, however our flight search does not include Chania, Crete. You’ll most likely need to look for flights from Nashville to Athens and then purchase a flight from Athens to Chania elsewhere. Airlines that I would recommend checking flights from Athen to Chania are: Lufthansa, Olympic Air, or Aegean Airlines. Hope that helps. As always, feel free to contact us if you need any assistance.

    1. Hi Carlos,

Generally speaking yes. We’re finding 7 weeks to be the optimum time to buy. Let us know if you need any help. Our travel advisors are available to assist you if you need it.

  24. Doing a multi-city adventure this summer from:

    Leg 1. 7/1: DFW > CMH
    Leg 2. 7/5: CMH > MAD
    Leg 3. 7/13 MAD > DFW

Should I book all at once of separately. Leg 1 might be better to wait on. Legs 2 and 3 would most likely have to be booked together I’m assuming. Thoughts?

    Leg 1 = Non Stop
Leg 2 = Will have to have a connection as CMH does not fly direct to MAD
Leg 3 = Would prefer Non Stop – however there seems to be only 1 flight on AA that supports a direct flight from MAD to DFW. The problem is that taking this flight back is very $$$$. A friend of mine has a much simpler trip just going round trip from DFW to MAD who is on the Direct flight back but does not have to pay near the price I would. I almost double the cost by jumping on this particular flight but am not 100% sure why – I would assume it because i’m in effect taking flying 1 way vs round trip????

That said Leg 3 may have to incur a connection because of price but wanted your thoughts.

So the question is, should I book Leg 1 separate form 2 and 3 or book all Legs at the same time?
When should I book these flights being that I have a few variables to consider – July 4th weekend, Mult-city destinations, and international travel.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks – Jon

    1. Jon, you are right that it would make sense to separate this into two tickets — one for the domestic leg and another for the round trip (open jaw) international flight. For the domestic leg, unfortunately Columbus to Dallas is a relatively expensive route because Southwest and the other low cost carriers do not fly it. That also means that fares in that market are likely to be less volatile because it’s the low cost carriers that initiate fare sales most frequently.

For the international flight, as of now the nonstop flight coming back is no more expensive than the others. Flights are still reasonably open so there is no huge sense of urgency, but I would suggest you watch fares closely and don’t wait too much longer. Since there is only one non stop flight on that day, you don’t want to wait so long that that flight starts to fill up and fares increase. That will happen eventually, as July is a very busy month for trans-Atlantic travel. The current fare on the trans-Atlantic portion is not bad for peak season travel in normal years, although during the height of the recession there were some much deeper discounts.

  25. We are planning to go to Florida in October, when should we book our flight from Toronto? We will be in Orlando to be exact, and we want a direct flight since we are taking our daughters with us. Please let me know. Thanks!

    1. Hi Farah,

We’re finding 7 weeks to be the optimum time to buy, although we recommend searching about 8 to 9 weeks prior to your departure to get familiar with the fares. There’s non-stop flight options and direct flights from Toronto to Orlando, which tend to cost more than connecting flight do. Please let us know if you need any help with searching or booking your flights. We’re here to assist you if you need it.

  26. I’m planning a trip to France in May. I’ll be starting to check airfares to Paris weekly as you recommend. Could you give me an idea what the best airfare would be from Calgary or Edmonton to Edmonton for that time of year? Thanks.

    1. Hi Pat,

You’ll want to look out for fares around $1100.00. Being flexible with your dates is the best way to get the cheapest fare. Try to avoid departing or returning on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday if possible. As always, let us know if you need any assistance. We’re here to help.

  27. I am traveling to Italy (JFK to Rome, then return is Venice to JFK) in May 2013 (departing May 16, back on May 26). I’ve been checking flights and 3 weeks ago (I should of grabbed them) the flights I want, great times and non stop too, were are $1,080 each. Today they are up to 1,300 each. Should I keep tracking these flights? Is it possible for them to drop again within the next month? Or should I grab them soon?

    1. Hi Christine,

Thank you for your question. We’re finding fares for those dates still starting at $1080 per person. They are not non-stops, but being flexible with your flight times and stops will get you the cheapest fares. Non-stop flights are starting at $1430 per person. For international flights, we recommend searching for flights about 4 months prior to your departure, so you are doing the right thing. Airlines release sales for international routes further out than domestic routes, so I wouldn’t wait too much longer to see if the price will drop. I recommend purchasing your flights earlier in the week, like on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. (That’s when airlines tend to release sale fares.) Sales often reach their peak four to eight weeks ahead of travel. So you still have some time to keep you eyes on the fares and if you see prices dropping for the flights you want, snag them quickly. As always, let us know if you need any assistance. We’re here to help.

    1. Hey Christine,

Happy you got the flights you wanted! It’s smart to snag them when you see them. Let us know if you need anything, we’re here to help you.

  28. Going on an Alaskan cruise June 23-30, and need a flight from either San Francisco or Oakland to Seattle and return. I need 10 tickets for family and grand kids. We can go up on Saturday June 22, since we do need to catch a cruise. Would I have a problem to wait the 7 weeks out for that amount of tickets?

    1. Hi Nonna,

Great question. Since you’re looking for 10 tickets, you are actually considered a group. We can only book up to 9 passengers in a reservation at a time, so you would either have to book your group separately online, which we don’t recommend since you may not get the same price for all the passengers. You’re best bet would be to book as a group with the airlines directly. They can accommodate your whole group and make sure the price is the same for all the passengers. Airlines that we recommend contacting for a group booking are Southwest Airlines (2 free checked bags), Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and American Airlines. We are finding that fares from Oakland are coming up cheaper than San Francisco, if that’s an option for you? I would recommend contacting them now to get pricing details and compare the airlines offers. I would book now when you get a price that you like. Fares are starting from $220 and up. Please let us know if you need any assistance.

  29. Hello, We are taking a cruise leaving May 25th which is memorial day weekend. We are flying from Denver to Seattle. I see fares at $275. My husband and i are not sure if we should book or wait for a better deal. What do you think. Thanks for the awesome article.

    1. Hi Gayle,

For fares from Denver to Seattle, $275 is not a bad price for the holiday weekend. Since you’re looking for Memorial Day Weekend, fares will be higher than usual. You can probably wait another week or 2, but I would recommend checking fares on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday since airlines tend to release sales on those days. If you’re not seeing any price drops, I would buy. Let us know if you need any assistance, we’re here to help.

  30. There are 13 of us flying from Detroit to Puerto Vallarta in August…are travels days are set for Sunday to Sunday and there is no flexibility. We are not finding a lot of flight options for those dates and what we do find are between $750 to $850. Is it worthwhile to wait and see if they come down before booking, or are we better of booking now and not taking the chance of not finding anything? It seems that August is not prime traveling time to Puerto Vallarta and many airlines do not offer any flights there at all.

    1. Hi Kim,

Since there are 13 of you traveling, you should be booking as a group. We do not book groups, but you can contact the airlines directly to get a group rate for your trip. We are only able to book up to 9 people on the same itinerary. Airlines we recommend contacting to compare group rates with are Delta Airlines, American Airlines, and United Airlines. I would contact them as soon as you can to begin comparing. Let us know if you have any questions.

    1. Hi Shelley,

We’re about 6 weeks out from the end of March, so I would definitely buy now. The longer you wait, the more likely the price will increase. Let us know if you need any help finding flights.

  31. We are looking for flights from Memphis to Hawaii in November (11/16 – 11/30) with our return flight being 11/30 (Saturday after Thanksgiving). I have been looking at air fares, am I looking too far in advance with return travel during the Thanksgiving weekend. I am turning 50 the week of Thanksgiving and this is my dream trip. Makes me excited to turn 50~

    1. Hi Brenda,

Congrats on turning 50 this year! For flights to Hawaii in November, you are definitely looking too early. You should start searching for flights about 10 – 12 weeks out from your departure date so you can get familiar with the fares. I would recommend to buy once you see the flights you like. Definitely contact us if you need any help.

  32. How far in advance should we book a flight from seattle, wa to phoenix, az, leaving 9/6/13 and returning 9/13/13? Thanks for your help.

    1. Hi Adele,

For flights in September, we’re finding that 7 to 8 weeks out from your departure is the optimum time to buy. You’ll want to keep an eye out for fares around $300 or less. Be sure to contact us if you need any help or assistance.

  33. Hi am looking for flights to chennai india in may when is the best time to book for cheapest flight? and what days to travel of the week would be best to travel with an infant?

    1. Hi Dhev,

I would recommend searching for flights now. Since you’re looking to travel in May, now is the best time to buy your flights. As for what day of the week is best to travel on, I would search for flights on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday since those tend to have less passengers on board then weekend flights. Since you’ll be traveling with an infant you have two options, either have the infant sit in your lap or pay for a seat for the infant. Either way you will have to pay for the infants ticket when traveling internationally. Please let us know if you need any assistance with booking your flights.

    1. Hi Melissa,

Cancun in July is popular due to the summer season. Booking your trip in April is a great decision. Starting now and heading into April you’ll want to search for flights to get familiar with the fares. Once you see a flight and fare you like, I’d jump on it as the prices will only increase the closer it gets to the date of departure. Definitely let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  34. I would like to go to the Bahamas with my Aunt, Uncle, and cousin. I have to buy the ticket, we are leaving in 5 weeks and 2 days. Prices are high at $630, when should I buy my ticket?

    1. Hi Lizzy, if the trip is just five weeks away, prices will likely only continue to rise, so it’s a good thing that you booked your trip now even though prices were on the high end. If you purchase through CheapAir, we do offer free Price Drop Payback. This means that you can keep an eye on the price of your flight by going to the My Trips section of our website, and then if it drops, you have the chance to redeem the difference for a voucher for future travel.

  35. After searching through many travel companies,I recently booked a trip through Cheap Air.com.to Hyannis,MA from RDU. Y’all had the best prices for air fare and I could’t beat the price for a rental car on Cape Cod in June. With your price drop feature,I am truely impressed. I now have a new travel agency.

    1. Hi there, thank you so much for booking with us, and it makes us very pleased that you had such a great experience. We hope you enjoy your June trip to Cape Cod, sounds great!

  36. We are planning a trip to Florida from Chicago in June and July. Our Disney cruise out of port canaveral is June 30. I am looking at round trip from Chicago O’hare or Midway to Fort Lauderdale June 27 and coming back on July 11. I am also considering one way flights from Chicago to Orlando on June 27 and Fort Lauderdale to Chicago on July 11. Any recommendations on when I should book the flights to get the lowest fares? Also, I usually fly Spirit or Southwest to find the lowest fares. I am trying to be careful with Florida being a high traffic destination during these dates. We are trying to budget, even though we got the cruise at a discounted price. Thanks for your suggestions.

    1. Hi Rich – thanks for reaching out! If you would like, you can reach us at Ask@CheapAir.com and if you email us your information, someone can reach out to give you some help with your airfare searching, since there are many ways you can go with Florida. It’s smart of you to be researching so early!

  37. Hello Admin,

I am planning to fly from IAD to AMD in mid Nov this year coming back first week of dec.
I checked price on your site and the cheapest is coming around 1200.
Is this a good time to buy or I should wait 3-4 months more to book ?

    Regards

    1. Hi Monti,

For flights from IAD to AMD you can wait till about 3 – 4 months prior to your departure in November. If you can avoid departing and returning on a Sunday and Monday, you will find cheaper fares. We’re finding it cheapest to depart and return on Wednesday, if that’s possible for you? Being flexible with your dates and flight times will get you the cheapest flights. If you need any assistance with finding flights let us know. We’re here to help.

  38. Hello and thank you for such an informative blog! I am searching for tickets in July from San Francisco to Juneau Alaska. I have been a bit baffled that I was able to find much cheaper fares for my relatives meeting us from New York in Juneau than I have been able to find traveling up the west coast.

I have been monitoring the fares for the past few weeks but they haven’t budged a bit, and Alaska air seems the only option for the Seattle to Juneau leg. Should I just go ahead and book the tickets now or wait a bit longer?

    Thanks again 🙂

    1. Hi Kristin,

You’re definitely doing the right things. Alaska Airlines is the main airline that services the route from Seattle. Almost all flights route through Seattle, which is why your options are limited. Fares from San Francisco to Juneau probably won’t budge much. You can wait it out more to see if a sale might decrease the cost, but I wouldn’t wait till the last minute. I’d recommend purchasing about 7 to 8 weeks out from your departure date. If you notice the prices increasing then I would buy to avoid the price going up more. Usually when you see the price staying the same then increasing, that’s an indication that prices won’t drop back down. As always, let us know if you need any assistance finding flights. We’re here to help you.

  39. Do you have any data on 4th of July weekend? I am trying to coordinate a group of women coming from four different states (NYC, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh) to New Orleans.

Thank you for your help. This site is very useful.

    1. Hi Emily,

For the July 4th weekend, we recommend searching for flights about 9 to 11 weeks out from your departure since that weekend is a busy travel weekend. Being flexible with your travel dates will ultimately get you the best deal. If you’re able to travel on July 4th, that often can be the cheapest day to fly on since most travelers prefer not to. Be sure to let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help you if you need it.

  40. Hi , traveling to aruba presidents week of 2014 from boston. Should I wait for jetblue? United has some fares out now for under $500 with a stop in newark. That seems like a decent price for that week?????

    1. Hi Sz,

Fares for flights in February 2014 have not been announced yet. You can only search for airfare 335 days out from the current date. So unfortunately its still too early to book flights for February 2014 now. I’d recommend waiting to book till 7 weeks out from your departure date. Please let us know if you need any help.

  41. Hi There,

We are looking to fly from DTW to MIA the second week of May. I’ve been watching the flights for a while and they have gone up 🙁 I hoping my holding out another week or two we will see them go back down. Would you say this is possible?

    1. Hi Cassie,

I would recommend to buy it now to avoid the prices increasing more. You mentioned that you’ve monitoring the prices for a while and that you saw they went up. Usually when the prices remain the same and then increase, the likeliness of them going back down is very slim. Airlines base their pricing on the demand of the route and Miami in May is popular so don’t wait too much longer to purchase your flights. Definitely let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. Being flexible with your dates is the best way to get the cheapest fares.

  42. Hi sz. I’m looking for a flight to Honolulu the second week of June. If I buy the ticket in April (the seven week rule) will the ticket be more expensive, or is best to buy now?

    1. Hi David,

Since Hawaii is a popular destination during the summer, fares for the summer will increase the closer it gets to the date of travel. We recommend monitoring the prices to see what’s being offered. If you notice that prices are only increasing, then I would recommend to buy since its not likely the prices will drop again before your departure date. As always, being flexible with your travel dates is the best way to find the cheapest airfares. If you need any assistance, please let us know. We’re happy to help you.

  43. I would like to fly to Ukraine from NY in the beginning of June till mid July. When is the best time to order the tickets?

    1. Hi Alina,

Now is a good time to start searching for airfares and get familiar with the pricing since we’re about 12 weeks out from the beginning of June. We recommend to purchase about 9 to 10 weeks out from your departure. As you’re monitoring the airfare, check to see if prices remain the same or if they are dropping or increasing. If you notice the price drop, buy it! If you notice the price increasing, then buy it. Airlines will increase the cost of the flights the closer it gets to your departure date. Keep in mind the best way to find the cheapest airfares is to be flexible with your dates. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help you.

  44. My husband and I want to leave for South Africa on June 14, 2013. We are finding tickets ranging from $1600 (2 stops) to $2200 (1 stop). Are these ‘normal’, ‘average’ prices?? We are flying from SFO to JNB either thru JFK or London. What do you think?

    1. Hi Dorothy,

Yes, that range is normal for flights to South Africa in June. During the summer time June – August is high season, so flights cost more during those months. If you are able to depart in May, you can get cheaper fares. Being flexible is the best way to find the cheapest flights. If you want to try using our Map Search, you can check fares and see what days are better than others.

  45. Hello!

I am planning 2 trips this summer. One from Boston-Austin from July 23-August 6 and one from Boston-Mobile or Pensacola either the 3rd or 4th week in August. I know, going to the deep south in the summer, crazy. Would it be safe to wait a little while longer to book these flight? They have been creeping up slowly but I do not want to book too soon.

    1. Hi Rachel,

Great question. I would advise to wait about 7 to 9 weeks out from your departure dates. Definitely continue to monitor the fares and if you only notice the prices increasing and not decreasing the closer it gets to that 7 – 9 week period, then I would buy. If you need any assistance with finding flights, please let us know. We’re here to help you.

  46. I’m planning a trip to spokane washington a week before july 4 so is there any way to avoid the high flight prices?

    1. Hi Richard,

The best way to get the cheapest prices is by being flexible with your travel dates. For example, departing on a Tuesday vs. Friday. I would recommend to buy about 7 to 9 weeks out from your departure date. If you provide us with your departure city, we’d be happy to help narrow down the cheapest dates to fly.

  47. I’m planning to go to Oslo Norway in June 19 from Atlanta and return July 7. I saw prices drop today at 930$! When is a good time to buy? Two weeks ago it was almost double

    1. Hi Naomi,

If you’re seeing the prices drop that much, I would definitely buy now! That’s usually a sign that now is the time to buy. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help you.

  48. Hello, my boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Detroit, MI from Sacramento, CA for June 7-June 10. Is the general “rule” of 7 weeks out a good one to go by for this?

    1. Hi Jerrolyn,

Yes, we’re finding 7 weeks to be the optimum time to buy. We do recommend to search for flights about 10 to 11 weeks out from your departure to get familiar with the fares. As always, feel free to contact us if you need any help with finding flights.

  49. Hi,

From the questions you’ve gotten here, it’s clear that we all want to know not just when the overall “best” time to buy a ticket is, but the best time for a given time of year, and destination. And your write-up indicates that it could make a big difference.

Can you make your entire database available? It would be great to build a little web service that could search out the stats for a given set of parameters.

and yes, I”m enough of a geek that I might just write it if you make the data available (Or can tell me where to find it).

( or better yet, add that service to cheapair! )

    -Chris

    1. Hi Chris,

Thank you for your suggestions. We’re actually working on a new flexible date search where this data will be used to assist travelers searching for the cheapest flights. Great minds think alike. 🙂 We’re still fine tuning everything, so definitely keep checking back with us.

  50. Hello! This information is excellent. Thank you so much for analyzing it. I have a question. We are planning to purchase three tickets for June 20 to 27 round trip between NYC and Reno. The prices keep going up and up. They started in the 400s and now are about $650. Do you think we should buy them now or will they dip down closer to the departure date? Thanks so much!
    Lisa

    1. Hi Lisa,

The cheapest prices for flights from NYC to Reno are starting from $450 and up, per person. That’s not specifying any dates. The more specific you are with your dates the less likely you’ll be able to get the cheapest fares. Since you’re traveling from NYC, being flexible with your airports can also save you money as well. Please keep in mind, for any given flight, the actual best time to buy might vary, depending on the market, the time of year, the day of week, and other factors. Your best option would be to probably purchase now, that way you lock in the rate. If you purchase using our website, you can take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program, where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket!

  51. Hi,

We are planning a trip to Europe (leaving June 28th and returning July 14th). We are flying from RDU to Brussels and flying home out of Frankfurt. We have been watching fares and they seem to be around $1600. Should we continue to wait to see if prices will drop or buy now.

    1. Hi Carol,

You still have some time to wait and watch the fares. If you notice the prices increasing, that’s a sign that the fares won’t drop back down. If you’re seeing the prices dropping, then buy. If you’re seeing the same prices for a few weeks now, then you can probably wait it out more and see. It’s still 3 months out from your departure in June, so there’s still a chance the prices could drop. Please keep in mind, for any given flight, the actual best time to buy might vary, depending on the market, the time of year, the day of week, and other factors. If you need any assistance with finding flights, please let us know.

  52. Hi… I am planning a trip to Florida on Memorial Day weekend with my kids (9 & 11). I would like to depart from Newark and fly into Palm Beach but will go to Fort Lauderdale as an alternative.. I would like to depart on May 22, 2013 in the late afternoon or early evening (but I can also depart early Thursday morning as an alternative) and preferably return on Monday May 27 but can return Tuesday May 28.. When would be the best times to book it? Any advice to keep the trip costs down?

    Thank you..

    1. Hi Alan,

I’d recommend booking now! Memorial Day weekend is a busier time for traveling since most people will be off work and school. Definitely being flexible with your dates and airports will save you the most money on your flights. I would suggest searching for flights tomorrow since airlines tend to release sale fares on Tuesdays, so you might be able to find some good deals then. Please let us know if you need any help with searching for flights.

  53. Hi,
I am planning a trip from San Francisco to Oahu from the 2nd of June until the 10th. In Jan flights were 513.00 a ticket, then down to 412.00. I was told to wait until 6 to 8 weeks prior to our leaving to book. Is that still good advice that I received from someone else or did I miss the boat on a great deal?

    Thanks,

    Lori

    1. Hi Lori,

Fares to Hawaii tend to be cheapest from February to early April, since its considered low season. If you’re traveling in June, I would suggest purchasing flights now, since Hawaii is a popular destination for the summer months. Fares will be higher the closer it gets to your departure date, so definitely purchase now to avoid prices going up further. If you need any assistance, let us know.

  54. Hi
I am planning a trip to south of France in early September for 3 1/2 weeks. When should I buy my ticket? Thanks

    1. Hi Carole,

For international travel, we recommend searching for fares 10 – 11 weeks out from your departure in September. Keep an eye on the prices and see if you notice them increasing, decreasing, or staying the same. If you notice the fares increasing, then buy since prices will only keep rising. If you notice the price dropping, then you should take advantage of the price once its dropped. If you’re not seeing any changes in price, that can be an indication that the fares may drop the closer it gets to your departure. Please keep in mind, for any given flight, the actual best time to buy might vary, depending on the market, the time of year, the day of week, and other factors. If you need any assistance with finding flights, please let us know.

  55. Hello,

My husband and I are planning a trip to San Fran, California in July. We have been eyeballing the prices and have seen them increase from the upper 300s to lower 400s over the last two weeks. I am scared that they will continue to creep up, but I also don’t want to rush into a purchase only to see a huge drop in two weeks. Please give us advice! Purchase now, or wait it out another 3 weeks or so to see if we can find a better deal?

    1. Hi Holly,

We’re still 3 months out from July, so you still have some time. I’d suggest to keep monitoring the fares since we’re finding the average time for purchasing the cheapest fares to be 7 weeks out from your departure. However, if you’re only seeing the prices increase, then that’s a good indication that prices won’t be going back down, but a lot of this also depends on where you’re departing from. Please keep in mind, for any given flight, the actual best time to buy might vary, depending on the market, the time of year, the day of week, and other factors. You mentioned departing in July, so if you’re planning to travel for the July 4th holiday weekend, I would recommend to purchase now, since that is a very popular week for travel. If you need any assistance with finding flights, please let us know.

    1. Richard,

I have seen Kayak’s post about their data and, without knowing more details about their methodology, I can’t really offer a definitive explanation. I can tell you that in our study booking 21 days out, versus 49 days out, resulted in airfares that were on average $17 higher on average. One potential difference is that in our study, we looked at 8090 of the most popular domestic routes and recorded for every departure dates fares for every booking date between 1 and 210 days in advance. We weighted each market and each departure date equally. Some studies (including possibly Kayak’s) base results on user searches and, in doing so, might be over-counting routes/dates that are very popular among their user base.

I can also say that, in our study, no more than $10, on average, separated flights booked between 27 and 92 days out. So, even though 49 days in advance was the rock bottom day on average, the surrounding days were pretty similar. The main lesson we learned from our data, which nothing in the Kayak study contradicts: booking too early or too late is usually a mistake, but there is a big gray area in the middle and the exact best date to book varies quite a bit depending on the cities and travel dates. That is why the best advice we can give is to check fares very frequently, get a good sense of the market, and be ready to pull the trigger when you do see a fare that’s significantly below what you’ve seen.

      – Jeff

  56. Hello CheapAir!!

I was wondering how far in advance should I buy tickets from Philadelphia to Las Vegas.. I’m traveling in late July and the last week in August. I’m not cheap but I would like cheaper tickets.

    Thanks!!

    1. Hi Ahleyha,

We’re finding the best time to buy is around 7 weeks in advance. Anything around $250 to $300 would be a great fare. We recommend to keep an eye on the fares and search about 10-11 weeks out to get familiar with the pricing. Please keep in mind, being flexible with your travel dates and times is the best way to find the cheapest fares. If you need any assistance with finding flights, please let us know.

  57. Hello,

I am planning a trip for two to Paris France next year March 2014 for spring break for one week. I have read that I should plan to research about every week to find a great deal. What would I expect to pay to fly around that time?

Thanks, this is a great site?

    1. Hi Alvin,

We’d love to help you with your flights. Where are you traveling from? Knowing your departure city will help us find the pricing. Thanks!

  58. Hi Jeff – We’re planning to fly out to Kona,HI departing from IAH on 4th of July, the airfare seems to continously going up. Today is about $1070/pp, would you advise to book the flight now or wait few more weeks until about 49 days before departure? Thanks!

    1. Hi Elle,

July is peak travel season for Hawaii. We’re finding fares to Hawaii are only going to increase due to the high demand. I would recommend to purchase now. When you purchase on CheapAir.com, you can take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program, where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! Please let us know if you need any help finding flights. We’re here to assist you.

  59. Hello.
I’m planning to flight from Dallas Fort Worth to Riga ,Latvia . I’m wondering when I should book the flights ?
    Thank you

    1. Hi Arthur,

Did you have any dates in mind? If so, please provide that information so we can best assist you. Otherwise, if you have no dates yet, being flexible with your dates is the best way to get the cheapest fares. In general, for international flights we recommend searching for flights to get familiar with the fares. We’re finding 11-12 weeks to be the average best time to buy.

  60. Hi CheapAir,

I’m sorry if you already answered this, but I’m looking to fly from Washington DC to San Fran in late July returning early Aug. July 28-Aug 5 is preferred, as well as Reagan National, but Dulles is do-able if much cheaper. When would you recommend purchasing tickets? I’m seeing high 300’s all the way to 550-600! Thanks.

    1. Hi Kathleen,

We recommend to keep monitoring the fares. If you’re noticing the prices aren’t getting any cheaper, then I would advise to buy. If you’re seeing the fares staying the same or decreasing, then that’s an indication that the prices may drop more. In any event, let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help you.

  61. I’m planning to travel in the end of 3rd week of July till middle of August (+- 3 days in each direction) . Also my wife and my newborn daughter(2 months right now) will travel with me , so what could be approximate price?
    Thank you

    1. Hi Arthur,

Unfortunately without knowing your routing (departure and return), it’s hard for us to tell you an approximate time to buy. In general, we’re finding that 7 weeks out from your departure is the best time to buy a domestic flight. For international, we’re finding 11-12 weeks to be the cheapest. If you can provide us more details, we’d be happy to look into it more for you.

  62. I want to travel to Aruba 11/30-12/1. I want to go nonstop from JFK. Right now the fares are over $700. When would be the best time for me to book?

    1. Hi Suzette,

For travel to Aruba in November/December, I would recommend to purchase about 12 weeks prior to your departure. It’s wise to start checking the fares about 4-5 months out from your departure to get an idea of the pricing. Are you only going for 1 night? Flights are cheaper if you stay 3 nights or more. If you are flexible with your airports, flights can be cheaper out of LGA or Newark as well. Ultimately, being flexible will save you more money. Be sure to let us know if you need any help with finding flights, we’re here to assist you if you need it.

      1. Thank you for such a prompt response. I am staying in Aruba a week–Saturday to Saturday. No non stops from LaGuardia. I have gone from Newark before, but I have to take in consideration the cost of a week’s parking. I will keep monitoring JFK and Newark.

  63. My family of six (two adults + four kids 8 to 13) is traveling from Seattle to Boston Sunday 7/28 and returning on Sunday 8/4. We prefer direct non-stop and we’ve been watching the fares for the past couple of months and they have been steadily increasing (about 20% since late Jan). Is now the right time to buy or should we wait a few more weeks/months?

    Thanks,
    Larry

    1. Hi Larry,

Since you’re noticing the prices increasing, that’s usually a sign that they won’t be dropping back down. Currently, we’re finding non-stop flights from Seattle to Boston for those dates starting at $537.75 per person, not including any baggage fees. I would recommend to purchase your flights sooner than later to avoid the fares potentially increasing more. Plus, when you purchase your flights on CheapAir.com you can take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program, where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! Please let us know if you need any help finding flights. We’re here to assist you.

  64. I need to purchase a roundtrip ticket from Seattle, WA to Cabo San Lucas Mexico 4/19-4/23 Beings that this is a last minute trip, am I stuck paying a ton of money for my ticket? The prices went up over $100 just from Thursday to today. Hope you have some good news/tips for me!

    1. Hi Kalisha,

You should purchase your flights now! Don’t wait any longer since the prices will just keep increase from week to week until the departure. I would recommend to either purchase today or tomorrow at the latest, since airlines tend to release sale fares on Tuesday’s. Hopefully you can catch a break and find a great fare, but you may already missed the window for getting the cheapest fares. Good luck and let us know if you need any help finding flights.

  65. I was on one of the air travel booking websites this morning (Monday) and had a great price ($571) showing up for a planned trip from Boise to Talahassee in early August. At the stroke of 9:00 MT, everything changed….flight times and airline combinations were completely different, and the cheapest ticket price went up over $200. Any ideas about why this happens?

    1. Hi Mike,

It’s not uncommon for airlines to update the flight schedules and pricing like you’ve mentioned. Airlines will shift pricing and schedules based on how well a route is selling or not selling. Airline continually assess the demand for a route and adjust based on their findings. I recommend that you read our blog post on Why Airfares Change All the Time. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights. We’d be happy to assist you.

  66. I am looking to book airfare for 7 of us to either Pennsicola or Ft. Walton, Florida in August. My concern is waiting too long to get a lower fare and chancing it that we won’t all be on the same flight. What can you suggest… should I still wait the 7-9 weeks to book this flight?

    1. Hi Donna,

That would depend on where you’re departing from. In general, we found 7-8 weeks to be the sweet spot for getting the cheapest fares. However, every route market is different and a lot of variables can come into play like the season, destination, etc.. I would recommend to monitor the fares to get a good idea of the prices. Watch them week to week to see if the prices stay the same, increase, or decrease. If they decrease, but it. If the price increases, then I would also buy to avoid them from increasing any more. If they are staying the same, then there’s a good chance the price will drop down later. In any event, we’re here to assist you if you need help finding flights. Please let us know if you need any help.

  67. A group of 8 girlfriends and I are looking to book a roundtrip flight to Vegas from NY from Thursday August 1st – Sunday 4th. A few of my friends want to purchase now at $562. Would it be best to keep searching and wait for the 7-8 week period to book, or go ahead and buy this week? Thanks so much for your help.

    1. Stella, unfortunately you have a couple things working against you. The first is that you have such a large group — and I assume you all want to be on the same flight. That makes it tough because as flights get more full they get more expensive and you need a pretty large block of seats. Secondly, you are leaving Vegas on a Sunday. Flights departing Vegas on a Sunday are notoriously expensive (because that’s the day everybody leaves). So I would say in your case you should book further in advance than usual or, in other words, pretty quickly. If you are willing to be flexible at all, you may find lower fares by adjusting your dates slightly (would Wednesday to Saturday work)? You can also try booking the seats in smaller groups. That can help, even if you all take the same flight. Sometimes, there may be only a couple seats left at the lowest fare and you can get that fare if you book 2 at a time. But with 8 you can only get a fare that would be available for all 8 passengers.

      1. Thank you so much for the prompt and excellent advice, Jeff! Much appreciated. I will suggest booking the seats in smaller groups.

  68. Hi- I am looking to travel from NYC to Orlando the first week in Nov. 2-9. I’m noticing at this moment, flights are more expensive for that particular week than the surrounding weeks. Is there a reason? Would it be advisable to go midweek, say Oct 30 -Nov 6 or do you think flights will come down for the Sat Nov 2 – Sat Nov 9 week?

    1. Hi Heather,

For travel in November, you definitely have plenty of time to keep monitoring airfares. In general, we’re finding 7 weeks to be the optimum time to buy. New York City to Orlando is a popular route so there’s still plenty of opportunity to find a great airfare sale from now till then. Being flexible with your dates and airports is ultimately the best way to get the cheapest airfares. Flying from Newark can be cheaper than JFK. If you can go midweek, Oct 30 – Nov 6, you can save $50+ depending on the flights you choose. Again, the more flexible you are the cheaper the price will be. If you have to go Nov 2 – 9, then you still have plenty of time to wait it out for the prices to drop. I’d recommend to not wait past 7 weeks prior to your departure though. In any event, feel free to contact us if you need any help with finding flights.

  69. Hi. I’m planning to fly to Tokyo in mid-June. I’ve been watching ticket prices for a month but nothing seems to be changing much in the price range. I also flew to Japan last summer and got a good deal on lower prices at just about this same time last year. Other than keeping my fingers crossed, is there any indication that those trans-Pacific tickets will come down in the next week or so?

    Thanks.

    1. Hi Wilson,

I would recommend to buy your ticket now. We’re about 8-9 weeks out from mid-June, so there’s not much time left till prices start to rise. I would recommend to purchase your ticket online with us to take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program, where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! Please let us know if you need any help finding flights. We’re here to assist you.

  70. Hi- I am traveling from JFK to STT for my honeymoon Sept 1-8. I’ve been watching airfares the past few months and noticed 2 weeks ago that the price for direct flights dropped to $300 including taxes but then a few days later it jumped up to $538 and is stuck at this price since. Did I miss the lowest price drop for my trip?

    1. Traci, first off congratulations on your upcoming wedding! You’re doing the right thing by starting to watch air fares early. The fact that you still have about 5 months before your trip gives you a little flexibility. The price drop you saw is exactly the kind of drop you should be looking for. Sales like that do happen from time to time and when they do, they typically don’t last very long. To be honest, you probably should have bought when you saw the big reduction but the good news is that you still have time and there’s a great chance there’ll be another sale at some point — so keep checking! It will also help if you can be a little flexible on your travel dates. Instead of checking just Sunday to Sunday trips, also try Saturday to Saturday and/or Monday to Monday, etc. if those would be workable for you. Best of luck and have a great honeymoon!

      1. Thank you Jeff. It wasnt a drastic drop but more of a slow decline and then it shot up in price out of no where. I am kicking myself for not purchasing but became a little greedy and thought it would drop further. Hey, weddings are expensive, gotta try to get at least one thing cheap, haha. I will continue to monitor. Thanks again for you’re advice!!

  71. Hi looking to book flights from london to lax for September 2013 when is the cheapest time to book, they seem to be going up and down daily, this is for 5 adults.

    many thanks

    1. Hi Nicola,

For flights from London to LAX in September, we recommend purchasing about 12-14 weeks out from your departure. Being flexible with your travel dates will be the best way to save. For example, if you can depart and return on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday, you can find cheaper fares. Let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights, we’re here to help you.

  72. My family of 3 is traveling from New Orleans to San Diego Thursday 7/18 and returning on Monday 7/22 for the Comic-con event.. I know this is a very busy time in San Diego. When should I start to look at and buy tickets for the trip

    1. Hi Frank,

We’re finding flights for those dates starting a little under $500 per person right now. You can probably still wait and monitor the prices a little more to see if they drop, but I wouldn’t wait more than 5 weeks to purchase. Your best option may even be to purchase now on CheapAir.com and if the price does drop, you can take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program, where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! Please let us know if you need any help finding flights. We’re here to assist you.

  73. Hi cheapair,
Loved the article, gave me a lot of insite on planning my trip.
I’m from Melbourne, Australia and am looking at going to Los Angeles mid October, however on browsing flights I’ve noticed the airfares are quite expensive for this time. Is there any reason for this? Should I be looking to push forward or later and travel in September or November?

    1. Kaisey, thanks for the kind words. You are right that fares between Australia and Los Angeles are higher in October than some of the other times of the year. If you are flexible enough to depart in November, there are some pretty good deals right now. For instance, United has a fare for $1142.05 USD including all taxes and fees that is available right now for a one week trip coming out on November 2nd. The availability looks pretty good for other November dates, too.

    1. Hi Al,

For flights during the July 4th holiday, I would recommend purchasing in the next couple weeks since that is a popular time for travel.

  74. Would like to travel round trip Washington, DC to London early August, returning early September. When would be the best time to buy tickets?

    Thank you.

    1. Hi Karen,

For international travel, we’re finding that about 11-12 weeks in advance generally is the optimum time to buy. However, being you’re flexible with your travel dates will get you the cheapest airfares. I would recommend using our Map Search feature which allows you to view destinations from Washington DC. Just follow this link: Map Search and enter your home airport. Then you’ll be able to view all the airports you can fly to. If you hover over London, you’ll be able to view a calendar of fares that are offered from Washington DC to London. If you need any help, please let us know.

  75. We are planning a trip to Hawai’i Island (the Big Island) in December. How far in advance do you advise we should buy airline tickets?

    1. Hi Donna,

For flights to the Big Island of Hawaii in December, I would recommend to search for flights about 10-11 weeks out from your departure. I would advise the search the airfares to get familiar with the pricing. Ultimately, being flexible with your travel dates will ensure you get the cheapest flights. For example, if you can depart and return on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday vs. a Friday or Sunday that can impact the costs greatly. Definitely let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  76. Good Afternoon,
When would be the best time to buy my honeymoon tickets. We are leaving Oct 27th and returning November 3rd. We will be flying out of Phoenix,Az to Montego Bay, Jamaica. Thank you in advance

    Brittany

    1. Hi Brittany,

Congratulations! Peak travel season for Jamaica is during the winter months (November – March) so don’t wait too long to purchase your flights. I would advise to purchase your tickets no later than 11 weeks out from your departure in October. Being that we’re in mid April, you still have plenty of time to monitor the fares to catch a good deal. Please let us know if we can be of any assistance in searching for flights.

  77. Any advice on when to book for Colorado? Planning to leave form nyc late august but the fares have been slowly rising. Should I wait? thanks

    1. Hi Kelly,

Depending on your travel dates, purchasing now wouldn’t be a horrible idea. If you’re noticing fares slowly rising, that can be an indication that they will only continue to increase. We’re still 4 months out from late August, so you still have some time to continue to monitor the prices… but I would recommend if you’re seeing flights at a price that you like, buy them. When you purchase on CheapAir.com you can take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program, where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! Please let us know if you need any help finding flights. We’re here to assist you.

  78. Hi, I’m planning to go to Philadelphia on labour day weekend from Toronto (Aug 30 – Sept 2) when would be a good time to book that flight ?

    1. Hi Nessa,

The fact that you still have about 5 months before your trip gives you a little flexibility. For flights on Labor Day weekend, I would recommend to purchase about 10 weeks or more in advance. There’s still a great chance there will be a sale at some point, so I would advise to monitor the flights. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help you.

  79. Hi there,
My husband and I are planning on flying from Portland, Oregon to Edinburgh, Scotland in early May 2014. I would like to know when the best time to book flight/hotel would be. Also, if we wanted to fly in to Edinburgh and then fly from Edinburgh to Dublin, Ireland and stay for a few days and then depart back to Portland, Oregon, how would you recommend going about booking such a vacation?
    Thank you!
    Kristin

    1. Hi Kristin,

I would recommend waiting till about December to start checking airfares again. Based on our findings, 11-12 weeks in advance was the optimum time to buy when traveling internationally. In checking the airfares from Portland to Edinburgh, something under $1000 would be a great deal. In any event, booking a trip like you mentioned to Edinburgh to Dublin and back home, you can use the “Multi-city” option to specify the exact routes you want. Please keep in mind that searches for flights can only go out 330 days out from the current date. (So flights and fares are not even available for May 2014 yet.) We’re happy to assist you with your vacation when you’re ready to book. Our travel advisors can assist you with multi-city flights as well as hotels, so don’t hesitate to contact us.

  80. Hello,

I’m trying to plan a trip to Shanghai this December, around 12/21/13-01/04/14. I’ve been keeping an eye on the prices and the cheaper ones have suddenly dropped out. Would you advise that I purchase a ticket now before the prices increase or is it still to early to buy?

    Thanks.

    1. Allen, while on average the best time to book an international flight is about 3 months in advance, because you’re traveling around the holidays, all bets are off. Some of the flights between L.A. and Shanghai are already starting to fill up. If you are flexible on your dates, you can probably afford to wait a while longer but if you’re set on going the 21st to the 4th, and you just saw a fare drop, I don’t think it would be a bad move to buy right now. If the fare does go down later, you can always take advantage of our Price Drop Payback!

  81. i need to travel from sfo to jfk from june 23rd-june 28th. should i buy now? or wait a bit longer? what are the historic prices for this time period? the cheapest flight now is around $550 for my times.

    1. Hi Jen,

Are you flexible with your airports? If so, you can save some money by flying into Newark or Laguardia. For JFK, buying now wouldn’t be a bad idea since flights are filling up. Being flexible with your airports, flight times, and even the number of stops is the best way to find the cheapest flights. If you’re flexible, you can probably wait a little longer. If you have set times and dates you’re looking at, that just narrows down your flight options which will result in higher airfares. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help you.

  82. Hello, I am trying to go to Vegas the weekend of July 12-14, I am trying to purchase flights but they are very expensive, so you think they will go down if I wait a little bit longer or will the price not change

    1. Hi Sandra,

Vegas is a popular destination year round, so depending on where you’re departing from it might be wise to purchase your flights now. Although, generally we’re finding for domestic flights that 7-8 weeks is the best time to buy, a lot of factors come into play. For example, you’re trying to depart on Friday and return Sunday, however if its possible for you to depart on Thursday and return Saturday, there’s a good chance the costs will be cheaper. Ultimately being more flexible with result in the cheapest flights. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

    1. Hi Dave,

The more flexible you are on your flights and dates, the more you can afford to be patient, but if you have exact flights that you want to be be on I would recommend booking sooner than later. Fares for those dates are priced well, so purchasing now wouldn’t be a bad decision if you find flights at a price you like. If you need any help with searching for flights, please let us know.

    1. Hi Daniel,

Flights from Kansas City to Honolulu for June 2 are starting at around $445 per person, not including any baggage fees than may apply. That’s not a bad price, so I would encourage purchasing now since flights to Hawaii can get expensive the closer it gets towards the peak summer travel season. You may want monitor the flights for a few more days and hope the price drops a little more, but I wouldn’t risk losing a good price just to save a few bucks. If the fare does go down later, you can always take advantage of our Price Drop Payback!

  83. My husband and I are flying to Seattle RT from Atlanta September 4th (wednesday) and want to return on Saturday (afternoon), September 14th. Delta looks to have the most flights daily that fit with our schedule as they are hubbed in Atlanta. However, flights are still $400+. Because my husband is terrified of flying, I’m shooting only for non-stop flights. I’m keeping a very close eye on the prices but they don’t seem to move in either direction more than $20. What’s the idea time to purchase with these specs/dates/destination?

    1. Hi Rebecca,

It looks like you have time to keep monitoring the airfares, so you’re doing the right thing. We’re finding non-stop flights for those dates starting around $455 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. You can probably wait till about 7-9 weeks out from your departure to purchase, but if you see anything below $400, buy it. If you need any help, just let us know. Our travel advisors can compare all airlines including Delta and Southwest when you call us.

  84. Thank you for that useful information. I will be going to London end of June would it be safe to purchase my ticket 7 weeks in advance for international as well I heard 11 weeks advance but I’ve been price watching and it’s still pretty up there. And I know June is summer so I’d appreciate your feedback thanks!

    1. Hi Ashley,

For international travel in June, its probably wise to buy now. We’re less than 2 months out from June so the chance of the fares dropping is low, so I don’t think it would be a bad move to buy right now. Plus, if the fare does go down later, you can always take advantage of our Price Drop Payback!

  85. Starting to plan a summer vacation to Curaçao on August 4th. Leaving out of Philadelphia. Starting to look at airfare and two weeks ago price was $1354 for 2 tickets. Last week it went up to $1440. Should I be worried? I know don’t want to overpay.

    1. Hi Jamie,

Based on what you’re seeing and from checking the availability for flights departing Philadelphia to Curacao on August 4, it would suggest that you should probably buy now. Curacao is a popular destination in the summer months, so fare won’t likely drop a lot if they even do. If you can be flexible with your travel dates, you can save some money that way. For example, if you can depart Monday, August 5 that can reduce the costs. In any event, if you purchase on CheapAir.com and if the price for your flights drops after you purchase, you can take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program!

  86. lots of useful info. 6 of us going to Jamaica from Las Vegas the first week or so of December. Any idea when we should try and book?

    1. Hi Nicholas,

For travel in early December, I’d suggest searching for flights about 3 to 4 months out from your departure. If you’re flexible with your dates, I’d recommend searching for flights that depart/return on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday. That’s the best way to get the cheapest fares. Since Jamaica is a popular destination during the winter months, booking earlier than later would be wise. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

    1. Hi RG,

Are you looking for non-stop flights? I’m finding the cheapest flights from NYC to Aruba for those dates starting at $685.35 and up, but they have connections. Also if you’re able to be flexible with your airports, Newark can be a cheaper option than JFK or LGA. If you are at all flexible with your dates of travel, I’m finding flights from July 2 – 9, starting around $510 and up. If you’re set on your dates then I’d caution not to wait too much longer since you’re looking for travel during the July 4th holiday. Flights will be filling up fast and costs won’t come down much, if any at all. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  87. I have exact days for my trip from JFK to Warsaw. Depart August 17 and arrive September 3. I would like to shorten this trip but not necessary non stop flight. When should I book it to pay cheapest price but not risk 20+ hours flight? Thanks!

    1. Hi Marcinny,

Since you have exact dates that you’re looking for, you won’t want to wait too much longer to book. We’re about 4 months out from your departure and we’re finding that about 11-12 weeks in advance is the optimum time to buy, so if you’re seeing a flight that you like you should probably buy it sooner than later. Fares will increase the closer it gets to your departure date. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  88. Hi, I want to book tickets for my summer vacation from July 28 until Aug 17, from Tulsa, OK to Orange County, CA. When is the best time to book the cheapest tickets???

    1. Hi Hedaya,

For flights from Tulsa to Orange County for those dates, I’d suggest to buy sooner than later. Don’t wait too long though, since fares are pretty cheap right now and they’ll only get higher the closer it gets to the date of travel. If you need any help with finding flights, please let us know.

  89. I am flying from Philly to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic and back from November 14th to the 19th. I am planning on waiting to book since it is so far out but there is currently only 1 non-stop flight those dates. Since there is only 1 flight, do you think that changes your estimates on when to book? I looked online the it appears the plane is currently half full.

    1. Hi Dave,

If you’re adamant about getting a non-stop flight, then it would be wise to purchase sooner than later since that flight is filling up. It is the only non-stop option available for that route. If your more concerned with cost, then you can wait it out a little longer… but I’d caution not to wait too long since Punta Cana is a popular destination for the winter months. If you need any assistance with finding flights, please let us know.

  90. Hi, I wanted to book tickets around july 2-9 for me & my family, there’s 5 of us total. It’s from Anchorage, Alaska to Minneapolis. I was wondering, when is the best time to start looking for cheap plane tickets? I looked at some tickets now but they’re still pretty expensive. Do you think the prices will reduce if I waited a few more weeks or will it increase? & is it better to buy as a group or split the group and buy separately ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Hi Mao,

For travel in early July, it would be smart to book now to avoid the costs increasing any more. Travel during the July 4th holiday is one of the busier times to fly so prices will be high. You can try booking the seats in smaller groups. That can help, but sometimes there may be only a couple seats left at the lowest fare and you can get that fare if you book 2 at a time. But with 5 you can only get a fare that would be available for all 5 passengers. In any event, if you need any help with finding flights, please let us know. Our travel advisors are here to assist you if you need it.

  91. I am flying to Puerta Vallarta November 30th-Dec 7th. When would be the best time to purchase my tickets?

    1. Hi Jason,

A lot of that depends on where you’re flying from, but in general for international travel around the winter holidays I would advise to purchase your flights sooner than later. From our findings, 11-12 weeks was the right time buy for international flights, however purchasing even earlier than that wouldn’t be a bad idea. Just don’t wait too long to buy. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  92. We’re planning a group trip for 12 to the Holy Land (flying into Tel Aviv) in March of 2014. The travel agency is pressuring us to buy now because they say that if we don’t reserve our air tickets soon the seats will sell out (we are 11 MONTHS AWAY!). Do you think this is reasonable or is he just pressuring us to commit?

    1. Hi Jeremy,

For large groups of travelers, like in your case, its always wise to purchase your flights well in advance. Typically, people with large groups can organize a group rate from the airlines directly. (Which is most likely the same thing your travel agency is doing.) The reason for this is so that each passenger can get the same fare price. This doesn’t mean you must book now, but I wouldn’t wait too long to book your group.

  93. Hi,
My husband and I booked a trip to Cancun Mexico for November 7, 2013 to November 14, 2013 the price now for non-stop from Philadelphia, Pa to Cancun, is 674 pp. Should I purchase now or wait?

    1. Hi Alana,

For non-stop flights from Philadelphia to Cancun, $674 isn’t a bad price. You can save more if you choose a connecting flight. Overall purchasing now wouldn’t be a horrible idea, but we’re still over 7 months out from your departure, so there’s certainly plenty of time to continue to monitor the fares and see if they drop. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help you.

  94. Thanks so much for all the wonderful information. In the article you mentioned that Thanksgiving flights were cheapest around 14 weeks prior in 2012. I was wondering if this includes flights to Orlando? We are looking to fly from DFW this Thanksgiving. We are planning on traveling from Sunday – Friday to get cheaper flights. I know Orlando is a popular Thanksgiving destination so I was curious what your thoughts are for when we should buy.

    1. Hi Dana,

For travel around Thanksgiving, purchasing well in advance is your best bet. 14 weeks prior to your departure is the average, although I would suggest searching for fares about 16-18 weeks out to get familiar with the fares. I also recommend visiting our FareTracker to set up an e-mail alert for fares from DFW to Orlando. You can follow this link to access your e-mail preferences with CheapAir and add routes you’re interested in tracking. http://bit.ly/17IsJfu We’ll alert you when the fare changes so you can act quickly to get the cheapest flights. Please let us know if you have any questions or need any assistance.

  95. Hi, thanks for the atricle, been the most friendliest and most useful information I have read. I am suppose to be travelling to Canada from Johannesburg South Africa in September. When would be the best time to book my ticket? I know applying for the visa is at least 6 weeks before the time. However I would like to apply with a return ticket!
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Bekah,

Happy we could help! For international travel, we recommend booking at least 11-12 weeks in advance from your departure date, but I would advise to search for fares earlier than that to get familiar with the prices. Ultimately, being flexible with your travel dates and times will be the best way to ensure you’re getting the cheapest airfare. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  96. Thank you for your insights. I have been watching RT fares from SF area to Orlando for a while for my family of 5. This will be an expensive vacation! They have been hovering in the $600-700 range for a while. We are at about 7 weeks out now. Do you anticipate a drop in price soon, or should we book now before the spike? Any other tips you can give would be greatly apprecitated!
    Thanks! John

    1. Hi John,

Fares for the summer months are on the rise. Since you’re departure is about 7 weeks out, I would definitely suggest you buy now to avoid the price from increasing any more. It’s not very likely they will drop from now till then, so I would grab them now. Plus, you can take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program if the fare drops after you buy. Definitely let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  97. Hello! Thank you for this great article! I’m planning on going to Las Vegas July 25-29, and have been keeping a look out on flights the past month or so. Would you recommend I wait a little while longer, or book by the end of this month?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Jamie,

That depends on where your flying from, but in general Vegas is a popular destination all year round so I wouldn’t wait too much longer to purchase. If you’re finding a fare that you like, I would grab it before it increases. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

      1. I’ll be flying out from Richmond, VA and don’t have a preference on the time. Whichever is the cheapest!

  98. Hi. We’re looking to travel from Hnl to Atl in late July. We are a little flexible with our dates, and would like to stay for about 2 weeks. I passed on an earlier airfare of $850, but now the prices are upward of $1K! I’m wondering what a “good” price would be for summer travel. We paid $680 last year to travel the same route in March. Also, is there an ideal booking time? We’re 3 months out now… Thank you!

    1. Hi MDF,

For flights from Honolulu to Atlanta purchasing now wouldn’t be a bad idea. We’re a little more than 2 months out from late July, so I wouldn’t wait too much longer since fares will most likely continue to rise. Ultimately, being flexible with your travel dates and flight times is the best way to get the cheapest fares. I’d recommend searching for flights that depart and return on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday. Based on the fares right now, something under $1000 would be a good price. Flights during the winter and spring months are usually the cheapest times of the year to book for flights to and from Hawaii. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights. Our travel advisors are available to assist you if you need it.

  99. My husband and I are planning on going to a reunion in Fort Walton Beach, Fl in mid September 2013. Is it too early to book? If so, when is the best time?

  100. re: reunion in Fort Walton Beach. We will be flying from ALB to VPS in mid September and looking for the best time to book

    1. Hi Judith,

Sounds like a great trip planned! For flights from ALB to Fort Walton Beach, booking now wouldn’t be a bad idea. Fares are actually pretty cheap for September. If it’s possible for you to depart and return on a Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday and Saturday/Tuesday, those are where the cheapest flights will be found. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  101. Are the prices for domestic flights in india going to decrease in june. If i book a ticket exactly a month before will the prices be low.

    1. Hi Divya,

Unfortunately we only provide flights that are domestic to the U.S. or depart/return from the U.S., so we’re not as familiar with domestic flights in India.

  102. I have been following airfares from Washington DC to San Francisco for the end of July. I passed up on some fare sales(375 round trip) about a month ago from Virgin air thinking that I should wait for the 7 week “magic “time. Should I go ahead and buy now or wait and see if there will be anymore fare sales from major airlines like Virgin or Jetblue etc? Right now the fares are 450 – 500 range for the best times.

Wish I would have bought at 3 months out but I had just started looking and wasn’t sure of the pricing.
    Thanks

    1. Hi Nancy,

Since you’re looking for flights at the end of July, there’s a possibility the fare may drop a little… but I suspect that fares will probably increase due to the popular summer travel season. If you’re able to be flexible with your airports, flight times, and travel dates, then I would recommend trying our Map Search tool where you can see a calendar of fares for the route you’re looking for. This can help you locate the cheapest flights. Keep in mind, when you purchase online with CheapAir.com, you can take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program, so if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. Our travel advisors are available to assist you if you need it.

  103. Heading to St Lucia (Vieux Fort – UVF). Heading out on August 30th and returning on September 2nd. There are four of us traveling. AA has a direct flight (but the price is a bit high right now). I’ve read the articles on line and comments on this forum. Just wondering if you had any “words of wisdom”.

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Keith,

Flights to St. Lucia are limited so I wouldn’t wait too much longer to purchase, especially since that’s Labor Day Weekend. Keep in mind, when you purchase online with CheapAir.com, you can take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program, so if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket!

  104. My friends and I are planning a graduation trip to Cancun a year from now, departing from Boston Logan. Tentative dates are May 17-24, 2014. When should we buy the tickets?

    1. Hi Maggie,

Congratulations! For travel from Boston to Cancun at the end of May 2014, I’d recommend purchasing in early 2014 but I wouldn’t wait past March though. I’d advise to check the flights each week (on a Tuesday or Wednesday) to monitor the prices. Ultimately being flexible with your dates is the best way to find the cheapest airfares. For example, if you can depart and return on a Tuesday or Wednesday, fares can be cheaper. Please let us know if we can assist you with finding flights.

  105. Hello!

My husband and I are traveling from Nebraska to Jamaica the end of September (22nd-27th). When would be the best time that plan on purchasing flight tickets? They seem a little high right now, but maybe they are always high due to the destination? Do you think there is a chance they will go down after Memorial Day or possibly the 4th of July holidays? Thanks!!

    1. Hi Malinda,

Now is a great time to search flights. We’re still about 4 months out from your departure, so there still some chance that the fares may drop. We found that 11-12 weeks was the optimum time to buy for international travel. If you’re able to be flexible with your travel dates, fares are a little cheaper if you can depart on Saturday the 21st and return on Thursday the 26th. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights. Our travel advisors are here to assist you.

    1. Hi Bob,

Happy you love the site! For travel during the holidays, I’d advise to purchase sooner than later. While for most of the year we are quick to caution people about buying their tickets too early, for travel around Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years booking too late is the much more serious concern. Airline will almost never discount these holiday flights due to the demand of the season, so if you find a fare you like, buy it! Let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  106. Thanks for responding to every inquiry! Any insight on flights from Houston to Queenstown, NZ Nov 22 – Dec 5?

    1. Hi Angela,

For international travel during the holiday season, I’d make sure to purchase earlier than later. Flights around the Thanksgiving holiday can fill up fast, so I’d caution to purchase prior to late August. A good tip is to monitor the fares to get a sense of the prices and check the fares each week. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help you if you need it.

  107. We are planning a group trip to Punta Cana for January 18th to 25th, we will be flying out of O’hare and would prefer a non-stop flight there, when would you suggest we book this?

    1. Hi Brian,

For travel in January, you should book towards early October. I’d recommend checking fares around then to get a sense of the pricing. Just be cautious since the more specific you are with your flight details (non-stop, morning flight, etc…) the less likely you’re going to find the cheapest fare. If you need any assistance with finding flights, please let us know.

  108. I am planning a trip to Florida from salt lake city for mid August. I am flexible with the airport to fly into but I have some hurtles. We have a cruise leaving out of port Everglades August 11 and arriving back in port everglades on August 18. After that we wanted to do Disney World up in Orlando till the 24th. We could fly into fll and take the cruise and then a flight up to mco and then back to fll to fly home or the other way around. I am seeing flights right now in the mid to high $400s. Is this a pretty good deal or should I hold out. Previously they have been above $500 so I am worried they are going to go back up. I am just not sure if I should hold out or not. Also what airport do you think would be cheapest with my itinerary? Thanks for your help and info from the article!!

    1. Hi Alie,

Sounds like a wonderful summer trip planned. For flights from Salt Lake City to Florida in mid-August, fares in the $400s are not bad. There are some dates that are a little cheaper, but I’d advise to book sooner than later, since fares will most likely continue to increase. I’d suggest trying our Map Search which you can enter your home airport and see where in the world you can fly and for how much. It’s a great option for flexible travelers. In checking Florida, Ft. Lauderdale is definitely the cheapest option, but Orlando and Tampa are not bad alternatives. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. Our travel advisors are available should you need the assistance.

  109. Hello, we are planning a trip to Maui from 10/31 to 11/7 from SFO. For the last week or two, airfare was $379. I just checked it this morning and it went up to $623. Yikes! There 10 of us (family trip). Do you think it’ll go down again? I am going to be watching the airfares and will buy when it gets to the $300’s again.

    1. Hi Jocelyn,

With 10 people traveling, you actually qualify as a group. That makes it tough because as flights get more full they get more expensive and you need a pretty large block of seats. Airlines that we recommend contacting are: American Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and Delta. Please let us know if you need any help.

  110. I am trying to get a ticket to Budapest, Hungary. I tried all kinds of variations like, booking it months in advance, next week, two weeks from now. No matter how soon or months in advance i’m trying, the prices are almost always the same. It’s frustrating. Can’t find a reasonable price not even 3-4 months in advance. Any suggestion ?

  111. Hi..Disney with the kids from Toronto, planning for just past mid-October. From reading your article is 60 days before the right time to book our flights. I worry that there will not be seats left? We are 4 travelling.

    Lisa 🙂

    1. Hi Lisa,

For flights in mid-October, I’d suggest searching for flights at the end of July or early August. Try searching for flights earlier in the week, like on Monday or Tuesday. You may want to even start searching earlier than that just to get familiar with the pricing. Depending on how long you’re planning to go for, I’d try to aim for flights around $400 or less. If you can be flexible with your flight dates and times, that will help in finding a cheap flight. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help!

  112. Awesome article. It answered all the questions I was Googling. Just one question: A friend of mine is looking to book a flight from West Virginia to Seattle and wants to know how far in advance would be good to buy a ticket, and which days are best to travel. What do you think? What should her strategy be?

    1. Hi Richard,

Generally it’s best to purchase about 7-9 weeks out from your departure date, but as we mentioned that depends on a lot of factors. As for strategy, I’d suggest that your friend sign up for our FareTracker which will allow you to track the fares for the routes you’re interested in. Our FareTracker alerts will notify you when the price changes on the routes you want to track. As for the best days to travel, that would be Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Those days are historically less traveled days to fly on. If you’re friend needs any help with finding flights, please let us know.

  113. Hello!

My sister is getting married in Cancun, so we are headed there (from Phoenix) November 12-17, 2013. I saw a price of $498 today and was planning on jumping on it (roundtrip, nonstop). Is this a good price? Would travel insurance be good with hurricane season?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Tabitha,

How exciting! $498 is a pretty good fare. Round trip fares from Phoenix to Cancun start in the $400’s, so that’s certainly not a bad price to pay. Although you could wait a little longer to see if the price drops, I wouldn’t take the chance. In any event, when you purchase your flights on CheapAir.com, you’re automatically eligible for our Price Drop Payback program, where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! Purchasing insurance would be a wise decision since hurricane season can stretch till November, but most importantly for an important occasion like your sister’s wedding it helps with peace of mind. You can either add travel insurance at the end of your flight reservation or by calling us and speaking with one of our travel advisors. Please let us know if you need assistance with finding flights.

  114. Hello Jeff,

Thank you for all of the helpful info.

My sister and I are renting a house on Kauai in June 2014. We have to sign the contract and provide a deposit now. This house books up completely a year or more in advance. Since I have no discretion in changing my dates, when do you think we should book our airfare from Chicago to Kauai?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Susan,

For flights to Hawaii, purchasing early in the year is best. Since Hawaii is a popular destination in June, I would recommend about 3 months out from your departure to begin searching for flights. I’d also recommend signing up for our Fare Tracker which will allow you to track the routes you’re most interested in. Whenever the fare changes, we’ll automatically e-mail you an alert so you can keep up to date with the flights. In any event, please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help.

  115. My husband and I are wishing to travel from Sydney to Hawaii and ongoing to LA when should be book are flights – travel dates 09/01/2014 to return in early Feb 2014. I did see some flights cheap a little while ago but they seem to have gone up by about $400. Any advice would be appreciated

    1. Hi Michelle,

For flights in 2014, you’ll have to wait a little longer. Airlines will only release flight schedules 330 days out from the current date (today), so we’re not even able to check flights for September 2014 yet. In general, when the flight schedules are released, I’d suggest searching for flights about 4 months out from your departure in September. If you’re able to be flexible with your travel dates, I’d recommend checking flights that depart or return on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday since those days tend to be less expensive.

  116. Hello –
Travelling from MSP to HNL 12/28/2013-1/4/2014 to celebrate my parents 50th wedding anniversary.
Ticket prices are really expensive right now…when is the best time to book? Will the prices get better?
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Donna,

Flights around the holidays are going to be higher than normal since that is one of the most popular of the year to travel. With that being said, it is wise to book flights during the holidays earlier than normal since flights will fill up and prices will continue to rise. That’s not to say you should purchase right now, but you shouldn’t wait past September to book your flights. If its possible for you to be a little flexible with your travel dates, you could save some money by flying from 12/29 – 01/05 if that’s an option for you? If you need any help with searching for flights, just let us know.

  117. Happy Memorial Day! Looking to fly SAN to ATL from November 25-30 for Thanksgiving. Hubby wants to buy now, but I’m trying to get tix under $450 each. Am I dreaming? They’re $530ish now. When should we buy? Thank you. 🙂

    1. Hi Lara,

Travel during the Thanksgiving holiday is one of the busiest travel times of the year. The airlines know this and use it to their advantage and increase flights during the holiday period, so the likeliness of getting a cheaper fare than $450 for that week is pretty low. While you can continue to monitor the flights for a little longer just to see if anything changes, you can also purchase now and take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program, where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! Just don’t wait too much longer to purchase, since flights will begin to fill up as travelers make their Thanksgiving travel plans.

  118. We’re traveling Sept 28th. We have some options on where we are leaving out of. MCI, STL or SGF. We could also do TUL but it’s usually not cheaper. We are going to HNL. Does the 7 week rule apply to Hawaii? Also, what am I looking at on prices. I’ve been watching them fluxuate in the $700-$800 range, but above you said 449 from KCI for June… Are the rates going to drop that much? Thanks for your help!

    1. Hi Jennifer,

For flights to Hawaii during the summer months, the 7 week rule would extend further out to more like 10-12 weeks since Hawaii is a very popular destination during the summer. Flights from MCI and STL will be your cheapest options and if you can be flexible with your travel dates, flying on Sunday vs Saturday can save you some money. In any case, flying on a weekday would be the best way to save on flights to Hawaii. Flights ranging from $700 – $800 are not bad for September 28th. Typically, Hawaii is cheapest during the winter months from December to April. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  119. Hi, my husband and I are planning to go to Philippines on May 2014. Around 3rd week of May for 3 weeks vacation. Flying from DFW, Texas to Cebu Phils..when is the best time to purchase the ticket?
    Your advice is highly appreciated.

    1. Hi Lara,

For international flights, we’re finding that about 11-12 weeks is the optimum time to buy. Since you’re looking for May 2014, you’ll probably want to start searching for flights in early February of 2014 to get familiar with the pricing. If you can be flexible with your travel dates, like departing on a weekday vs a weekend, you’re likely to get the cheapest fares. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  120. Hi,
We are planning a trip from Sept 15-27, 2013 and are looking for flights from YWG to MCO….since this is a relatively slow time of the year for Florida travel will the flight prices continue to go down throughout the summer or will they remain what they are now?

Also our other option is to go from either GFK or FAR as they are a pretty short drive from us. We have done this before and the prices were always cheaper then from YWG but this doesn’t seem to be the case this year.

    You advice is appreciated!
    Thanks

    1. Hi Sarah,

Flights are definitely cheapest from Fargo, pricing out at around $475 per person. Now is a good time to buy since the fares are cheap, but you still have a few weeks to watch the fares and see if the price drops a little. (They won’t drop much if they do.) I would avoid waiting too long though since prices will climb up the closer it get to your date of travel. If you need any help with finding flights, just let us know. CheapAir Travel Advisors are available to assist you if you need it.

  121. Great site – so glad I joined up! On May 1, 2012, I booked our 3 flights – round trip from Edmonton to Phoenix (direct) via UA Airways and paid approx. $535 pp. The actual trip was in March 2013. So, I assumed that booking EARLY was the key. Well I have been checking since the March 2014 flights have come up, and I cannot believe how expensive the flights are – in the $830-870 range for a direct flight (which is what we want). Do I take a risk and keep waiting (it’s spring break – our dates are not flexible since our son is only out of school for certain days)?????

    1. Hi Shawn,

For flights in March of 2014, you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the fares. Typically for international flights, we’re finding 11-12 weeks to be the right time to buy, but that does depend on a lot of factors. In your case, since you’re looking for direct flights you’ll have less options to choose from so searching even earlier than 12 weeks out would be wise. I’d suggest checking flights in December. In any event, whenever you purchase your flights on CheapAir.com, you’re automatically enrolled in our Price Drop Payback program where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! If you need any help with finding flights, please let us know.

  122. Hello! I am planning on buying a ticket from Charlotte, NC to Houston, TX (IAH Airport, Hobby is not an option) from July 6th to July 13th. Leaving from Greensboro, NC is also an option. I know this is pretty soon. When is the best time to buy for these dates?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Cat,

Now! Flights for July are filling up since its 1 month away, so booking sooner than later would be your best bet since fares will continue to rise the closer it gets to your date of travel.

  123. I’ve had a quote from a travel agent to fly to UK return $2081.42 per person for end October returning end November this year. Is this a good price please

    1. Hi Colleen,

In order for us to determine if that is a good price, we’ll need to know where you’re flying from and to. If you also have any dates as well, I’d be happy to check prices and compare airlines for you.

  124. We are planning to travel from WI to Orlando over Christmas. Going to Disney for Christmas, Lord help us!! I noticed you have some very helpful advice. Wondering when you would suggest we purchase airline tickets and maybe what a reasonable cost would be for that time of year. Thanks!

    1. Hi Tina,

For travel during the busy holiday season, we recommend purchasing further in advance than normal. In fact, depending on your travel dates I would suggest that you book sooner than later since the airlines know that the holiday season is always in high demand, so its highly unlikely that they will discount those flights. Depending on your length of stay and departure dates, fares ranging from $350 – $450 would be a good price from Milwaukee. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  125. I am planning a trip to Maui from Sacramento for my daughters college graduation. I already have a place to stay and want to fly non-stop on 9/18-9/25. The fares seem high right now and I want to know if they typically go down for Sept the closer we get. Being a single mom I really need the best price. Can you help?

    1. Hi Michele,

Flights from Sacramento to Maui (non-stop) for those dates are starting at $532.94 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. That price is around the average price for that route, which isn’t a bad cost for a flight to Maui from Sacramento. I would suggest purchasing your flights sooner than later since the prices will increase the closer it gets to the date of departure, unless you’re willing to take a connecting flight in which prices are starting at $448.74, not including any baggage fees that may apply. To book, you can follow this link: http://bit.ly/Zrr0cr (Keep in mind, whenever you purchase online from CheapAir, you are automatically enrolled in our Price Drop Payback program where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! If you need any help with finding flights, please let us know.

  126. Hi. Im planning to go to Philippines from Doha,Qatar this coming December,2013. Which is the best month for me to buy a ticket? Thanks 🙂

    1. Hi Citadel,

Unfortunately we do not sell flights that do not depart or return from the U.S. or Canada. I would recommend purchasing your flights about 3-4 months prior to your dates of travel.

  127. My family and I are planning a trip to Hawaii (Big Island) for spring break. Our dates are March 30 to April 6, 2014. We want to use miles and we need a nonstop flight as we will be traveling with a one year old and two other small children. The carrier we need to use, Alaska Airlines, only has one available nonstop flight on the dates we need to travel and currently has the best rates. I’m afraid if I do not purchase the tickets, they will only increase in price given the limited availability and time of year we plan to travel. Are my fears warranted? Any advice?

    1. Hi Kay,

Travel to Hawaii from January into April tends to be the cheapest time to visit the islands. I wouldn’t worry to much since we’re still so far out from your travel dates, but I do recommend that you sign up for our Fare Tracker which will allow you to track the routes you’re most interested in and we’ll e-mail you when the price changes. Alaska airlines will most likely add more flights as the months pass based on the demand of the route, but depending on where you’re flying from they may only have the one non-stop flight. I’d advise checking flights again towards the end of this year. If you need any help, just let us know.

  128. Hi, firstly, the article was great! Finally some real information!
Could you help? I’m planning on travelling from London to New York around August 20th (returning a month later), however, I think that’s around the time the peak season finishes. My dates are flexible a few days either way and I was wondering what date would be best to fly out on around that time to miss the end of the peak season and get the ticket as cheap as possible? Also, I’m in a bit of a pickle because I have to work at the beginning of summer to save money for the ticket (the joys of student life) so do you know exactly when the last opportunity is to book a ticket at a rock bottom price? Finally, is New York actually the cheapest place to travel to from London? I’ll be travelling around the U.S. so, if there’s a cheaper ticket available, I can start from another city!
Thanks SO MUCH for your help – it will save me a substantial amount of mental torture.

    1. Hi Isobel,

For flights from London to New York, the dates you’re interested in (Aug 20 – Sept 18) are actually pretty cheap. We’re finding fares starting from $753.55 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. To book, you can use this link: http://bit.ly/17pB8ar New York is the cheapest arrival destination for you to fly into, but other airports in the area (Philadelphia and Boston) are also similar in price, just a little more expensive. The absolute cheapest option would be from August 26 – September 25 at around $705 per person, however the cheapest flights have 3 connections vs flights that are non-stop for about $50 more. As for when to purchase your flights, the sooner you can the better. Airfares will most likely continue to rise the closer it gets to your date of travel, so if you can purchase this week or next, I’d highly recommend it. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  129. Thank you for a great artical! This is the exact information I was hunting for. I’m planning a trip from Adelaide to North Carolina spending just over a week there then flying back to SFO to spend another week there in Feb 2014. I’m seeing that I have to fly into LAX and then catch a connecting fight. Can you advice if the 7 to 12 week still apply? and what is the best way to book my connecting flights. Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi Andrea,

For international travel, we’re finding 11-12 weeks to be the optimum time to buy… but I’d suggest searching for flights about 4 months out to get familiar with the fares. With connecting flights, since you’ll be traveling from Australia to the states, flights connect through LAX due to the long flight time. When you book your flights, you’ll want to search from Adelaide to North Carolina. The connections will be included in the flight results. You’ll just need to pick which flights you prefer. It’s not recommended to book your flights separately since baggage will not transfer. For your flight from North Carolina to SFO, you will need to book that as a separate ticket, since you’ll be flying a week later. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. Our travel advisors are available to assist you if you need it.

  130. Booked a cruise 11/30/14-12/6/14. Now worried about getting flights from Boston to FLL the saturday after Thanksgiving (11/29). Would it be better to re-book the cruise for the following week? I can do that if it means substantial savings on the flights.

    1. Hi Loliola,

The savings shouldn’t be substantial enough to warrant you changing your cruise to the following week. Currently, we’re seeing no significant price difference for flights this year for those date, but unfortunately we cannot search more than 330 days out from the current dates (today), so we can’t even see pricing for your dates in 2014 yet. I suggest to check back on flights for 2014 in 2014 when pricing will be available.

  131. Hi,

Thanks for article. It is very informative. I am planning to visit India, more precisely Toronto-to-Ahmedabad (yyz-to-amd) from August 31, 2013 – September 22, 2013. At this moment, I find rates near about $1400.00. I am wondered about the best time to buy my ticket. Please help.

    Thank you.

    –Rikin

    1. Hi Rikin,

You’re doing the right thing by actively looking for flights now. I wouldn’t wait much longer to book your flights since the prices will likely continue to rise the closer it gets to your date of travel. In any event, you can shop in confidence on CheapAir.com and take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket!

  132. Hello! I am so grateful to have stumbled upon this article, and be able to seek help with my – now 60 day, daily, airfare search! I am looking to fly a family of 4 (3 adult age, 1 child – age 3) from RIC to MCO from Sept 10th thru 15th…with these dates being flexible for three days, either side. Cheapest is at $200RT. Ive been waiting in hopes of fall and/or last min deals that would lower that by at least $40pp. Though I’m not sure if thats even realistic. Should I continue to hold out? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    1. Hi Sheena,

Happy you found us! For your flights, $200RT is a pretty good price… but we’re finding if you can travel September 11 – 16, fares are starting at $173.75 (RT) per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. To review flights and book, you can follow this link: http://bit.ly/ZFBvJb (At around $175 per person round trip, that’s a great fare. I’d recommend buying it now since there’s no guarantee the prices will stay the same. If anything, they’re going to increase the closer it gets to your date of travel. If you need any help with finding flights or need any assistance, feel free to contact our travel advisors anytime.

  133. Looking for a flight from ATL to San Diego around the beginning of July for about a week. I’ve been looking at flights and the cheapest I’ve found is $406 round trip. Not sure if I should book that or wait it out. Do you think the price will go down between now and then?

    1. Hi Liz,

You should definitely book now! If you’re looking at the beginning of July, you don’t have much time left and flights will fill up fast. I would not wait to book since the fares will only increase the closer it gets to your date of travel. With domestic travel, you typically want to book about 7-9 weeks out from your departure. Please let us know if you need any help with searching for flights.

  134. Hi I am planning on taking a trip to St Louis at the end of August however the cheapest I have found is 299 do you think that this may be the lowest or should I wait a few more weeks.

    1. Hi Leatrice,

We’d love to help you. From where are you departing from and how many days? Once we have this information we can look into this more.

  135. Flying from Asheville, NC to Traverse City, MI. for the week of Christmas 2013 When would be the best time to purchase this ticket ? Does the 7 week rule still apply?

    1. Hi MC,

For flights during the holiday season, the 7 week rule no longer applies. While for most of the year we are quick to caution people about buying their tickets too early, for travel around Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years booking too late is the much more serious concern. When airlines launch fare sales, they almost never offer discounts on flights that are already heavily booked. So waiting for fares to drop usually doesn’t work. In those circumstances, it’s hard to imagine that booking too early would ever be a problem.

  136. Hello, I’m trying to find a ticket to Los Angeles, actually if I can fly into Orange County that would even be better.
Trying to get a ticket no more than $350.

Can you help me with this, I need to be there from July 17th-22nd.

    Thank you!

  137. Hi, I am traveling to Maui for Thanksgiving from MHK (11/23-11/30). Will I be okay to keep waiting to see if the price drops at all (or if more options come up for flight times at the best price- we are going with two small children)?

Also, I noticed one of your options has a connection in Vancouver – would we need passports for that?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Jennifer,

In checking your dates, flights are starting at around $1600, per person… which is expensive. If you’re able to fly 11/24 – 12/1, fares are starting around $1270, which is much cheaper. As far as connecting through Vancouver, all U.S. citizens must have a valid passport when traveling to another country, even if its just a connecting flight. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  138. Hi,

We’re going on a cruise leaving from Miami on Sunday 29th Dec 2013. We need to fly out from SEATAC on 12/25/13 to Miami and catch a return flight on 01/04/14.

The prices are really bad..I’m seeing things ranging from $700 to $800 and more.

My question is when should I start looking and when should I buy the tickets?

    Thank you

    Dean

    1. Hi Dean,

We’re finding the cheapest flights starting at about $720 per person. I’d recommend to purchase the flights sooner than later to avoid the fares from increasing any more.

  139. Aloha Jeff!

Great informative article! Would you be able to advise when would be a good time to book a flight to Honolulu from Vancouver if we want to be there by week of September 24th? I noticed price had increased in just a span of a week and am starting to worry if price will only keep going up…. Any advice you can pass on would be much appreciated! ~ Michelle

    1. Hi Michelle,

You’re certainly doing the right thing by monitoring the fares. For flights to Hawaii from Vancouver for the end of September, I’d suggest booking sooner than later. Hawaii is a destination that is in high demand for the warmer months, so I wouldn’t wait much longer to book. The prices are likely to continue to rise the closer it gets to your date of travel. When you book on CheapAir, you are automatically enrolled in our Price Drop Payback program where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  140. Hello I forgot to tell you where I was leaving from…I wrote this yesterday. I leaving from N.Y.C. but I can fly out of Newark if I can get the right price.

” I’m trying to find a ticket to Los Angeles, actually if I can fly into Orange County that would even be better.
Trying to get a ticket no more than $350.
Can you help me with this, I need to be there from July 17th-22nd”.

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Tai,

Thank you for providing us with that information. The cheapest flight we’re finding is from Newark to LAX for about $374 total, not including any baggage fees that may apply. In order to get this fare, you will need to call us at 1-800-243-2724 to speak with one of our travel advisors who can assist you.

  141. Hi I just sent you a comment, would like to add information.

2 Students going to Manila, Philippines
    from mid nov-before January 6
we are hoping to spend $1200-$1250

please help us find a good deal for this flight.

    Thank you,
    Kriszella

    1. Hi Kriszella,

For international flights departing in November, I’d suggest purchasing your flights about 3 to 4 months prior to your departure date. If you can be flexible with your travel dates, flying on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday can be cheaper. In order for us to check pricing we’ll need to know exact dates. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

    1. Hi Rita,

Searching for flights now wouldn’t be a bad idea. We’re about two and a half months out from September, so I’d monitor the flights and buy as soon as you find the one you like. If you’re flexible with your dates, try searching for flights that either depart or return on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday since those tend to be the cheapest days to travel on. Let us know if you need any help with finding flights, we’re happy to help.

  142. Looking to book flights from Healthrow to Orlando for last 2 weeks of May next year, party of about 10 of us. The flight prices are just being released should we book now or wait?
    Thank you
    Chris

    1. Hi Christine,

Since you’re traveling with a group of about 10, your best option would be to book a group with the airlines directly. We can only book up to 9 passengers in a single reservation at a time. When you book a group with the airlines, they reserve the same price for all the passengers in the group. Airlines I would recommend contacting about a group rate are: British Airways, US Airways, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, and Delta.

  143. We are looking to travel from Phoenix to Maui around 10/3-10/13 with +/- 1 to 2 days flexibility on either side. We are a family of 5 with 3 children ages 6/14/15 at time of travel. I have signed up for alerts on Hawaiian and I stalk the major airlines’ and Allegiant’s sites several times a week. Fares seem to be creeping up. Can we expect a tick downward as summer comes to an end, or are we better off purchasing now before they go up any further?

    1. Hi Michelle,

First, let me say that you’re doing all the right things. Currently fares for those dates are starting around $610 per person, not including any baggage fees, which isn’t a bad price for flights to Hawaii in the fall. As for whether the fares will drop any, it’s hard to say. Hawaii has been in high demand. Since you’re noticing the fares creeping upward, then I’d advise to buy sooner than later to avoid the fares possibly rising any more. In any event, when you purchase on CheapAir.com, you are automatically enrolled in our Price Drop Payback program where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  144. I plan on booking a trip to Las Vegas flying out on the 22 of August and coming back on the 26 of August. when is the best time for me to book the flight. I’m on a student’s budget.

    1. Hi Carmen,

Las Vegas is a very popular destination. We’d be happy to look at the fares for you. Where are you departing from?

        1. Hi Carmen,

Thanks for providing me with that information. Flights from Atlanta to Las Vegas for those dates are starting at $334.17 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. To book this flight, you will need to call us at 1-800-243-2724 and speak with a travel advisor. I would advise to purchase your flights sooner than later since airfares can rise the closer it gets to the date of travel. If you can purchase now, it wouldn’t be a bad idea since we’re about 2 months out from your departure.

  145. Planning for 3 of us to fly from Philadelphia, New York, Delaware or Miami to the world cup 2014 in Brasil.

I would imagine flights prices will rise when the schedules are determined. Which state would provide the cheapest route to Brasil – Also, which arrival city in Brasil? We are very flexible and like to travel as cheap as possible.

    1. Hi Shane,

That’s an awesome trip! It appears Sao Paulo, Brazil would be the destination you’re looking for. Flights to Sao Paulo from the U.S. would be cheapest from Miami or New York. Miami would offer more non-stop flight options than New York. Most flights from New York will require a connection, it just depends on the flight schedules which have not been released yet. We are only able to search flights 330 days out from the current date. Since you’re flexible, I’d recommend to monitor the flights once you have your dates in mind and buy when you see a price that you like. Please let us know if you need any help.

  146. Hello,

I am looking to book a flight to Orlando (MCO), departing from El Paso, Texas (ELP) around late October (30 or 31) or early November on the weekend of the 8th ( this being the ideal time for me; my birthday is on the 8th and i would like to be in Orlando to celebrate on Disney World). I am flexible on the dates as long as they don’t interfere with school so i am wondering when would be the best time to start looking for tickets?

    1. Hi Alonso,

For flights from El Paso to Orlando, we’re finding the cheapest flights are November 2 – 13. I’m not sure when your school starts or how many days you’re looking to go for, but flights for those dates are starting around $357.00 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. To book, you can follow this link: http://bit.ly/13YS41Y As for when to purchase, we’re more than 4 months out from November so you still have plenty of time to narrow your exact dates down. I’d advise to purchase no later than 7 weeks prior to your departure date, but of course you can purchase anytime you find the flights you like at the right price. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights or have any questions. We’re here to help.

  147. hi, i would like to book a flight from toronto to london, london to lagos and lagos to toronto. i will be leaving in december 2013 and returning january 2014. so i am wondering when would be the best time to start looking for tickets?

    1. Hi Pero,

For flights departing in December, you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the fares. Since December is the holiday season, I’d suggest purchasing flights in September or October.

  148. Hello,
I am planning on traveling to Jamaica in November and have already started looking for flights. Does it make sense to book a one way flight if i found a great deal and wait for a deal (hopefully) for the return flight?

    1. Hi NikeeB,

Booking one-way flights isn’t a bad idea. Often you can find great deals from different airlines offering one-way fares. Often when you add up the two one-ways though, the price can be comparable to the round trip costs. In any event, if you need any help with finding flights, please let us know.

  149. Hi,
I have posted a comments days ago, and I saw that you are replying to everyone but not to my comment? is there anyone here willing to help me?

    1. Hi Kriszella,

Sorry about that. Just replied. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. 🙂

  150. I’m planning on traveling to PVR from LAX with a group. I looked up prices and the best I can find only has 5 tickets left and their is 6 of us. Although my partner and I can grab 2 tickets for ourselves, however, that will change our carpooling plans. How likely will the airline offer another non-stop flight to PVR at the same price or lower? or will the prices just go up? $430 is the best price I’ve found. non stop.

    1. Hi APG,

Whether the airline will add another non-stop flight for that route depends on a few factors. When are you departing? If its less than 3 months away, it’s probably not likely. If its next year, then there’s still time and a chance the airline may sell the whole flight and add another non-stop flight to that route.

  151. I am attending a wedding on October 16th-20th, 2013 to Oakland, CA -> Maui, JI. My friends booked earlier last month when the flights were as low as $360 per round trip flight. Now the tickets have risen back to ~$500 per round trip flight. Given your advice, I should wait until July to early August to book? I am afraid the tickets will continue to rise. Also, can you provide some details on how airlines allocate more planes for flights? In other words, if there are 7 airplanes flying to Maui on Thursday, and they are all booked up, do they suddenly add more flights/airplanes to that day or is it only a finite number? I just don’t want seats to be sold out / super expensive if everyone is going that day.

    Thanks

    1. Hi Tony,

As to whether the airlines will add more flights to the schedule, it’s highly unlikely. Their schedules, crews, fuel-needs and gate-personnel are typically set far in advance. Sometimes airlines substitute planes with more capacity, but you cannot count on that. With that being said, I wouldn’t hold out for a major price drop since the flights are filling up. There is a chance that the flights won’t fill up in time and the airlines will reduce the fares, but its highly unlikely since Hawaii is a popular destination. In any event, if you purchase now you can always take advantage of our Price Drop Payback program where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  152. I am looking at going from Vancouver, BC to Cartagena, Colombia in December (approx Dec 10- Jan 2).

I was pricing flights last night, there were many around $900-$1000 (Wednesday). One day later, prices seem to have jumped to approx $1400 (Thursday)

When should be the best time to book this flight?

    1. Hi Jason,

The behavior you’re noticing isn’t uncommon. Unfortunately, airfares fluctuate often. I would recommend waiting and checking again next week, like on Tuesday and Wednesday or even on Saturdays. I’d continue to check each week and often to see if the fares drop any. Since you’re not traveling till December, you still have a little time, but I’d caution not to wait too long since flights around the holidays will fill up.

  153. Hi,

When would be the best time to look for airfare for multiple flights for dates below from Honolulu to Abilene, from Abiline to Vegas, Vegas to Honolulu. I found some fare today at $844. I was wondering if it’s going to be lower if I wait and see if prices will drop. I’m not sure if $844 is a good deal or I should book it.

    HNL to ABI – 11/26/13
    ABI to LAS – 12/3/13
    LAS to HNL – 12/10/13

    Thank you
    Crystal

    1. Hi Crystal,

For travel around the holidays, I’d recommend purchasing sooner than later. Flights around the holidays are known to be more expensive and typically fill up fast. $844 isn’t a bad price for a multi-leg trip like yours. 154. I am planning a trip to NYC 12/20-22/2013. When should I start looking for airline tickets? I’m noticing that they are up and down right now and a lot of flights say “only 3 tickets left” (or something similar). I’m worried I’ll have to take flights at ridiculous times if I wait.

    Any help is appreciated,
    Jennifer

      1. Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for providing us with that information. For flights around the holidays, I’d recommend purchasing sooner rather than later since flights will be filling up fast. Currently, I’m finding flights starting at $235, not including any baggage fees that may apply. If you are more specific with you’re flight information, then you’re likely to find the flights will be more expensive. Usually the airlines try to price the more convenient flight times a little higher than in the morning or at night. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  155. Hello! This is a great article. My husband and I are planning to travel to Quito, Ecuador in early February. I think this will be a good time to go. From my research it seems December and January are very expensive months to travel there. I will definitely keep my eye on different flights, but do you think somtime in November could be the ideal time to purchase tickets? We plan to stay in Ecuador the alotted three months and also spend some time in Peru. Do you know whether it would be more cost efficent to travel back to Quito and fly back home to Kansas City, or do the “Open Jaw” flight schdedule since our trip is so long? Thanks for your help! 🙂

  156. I left a previous comment, but forgot to ask. What would be a “good” fare for traveling
from Kansas City-Quito, Ecuador. We will be gone roughly four months leaving early February 2013. In the past I have found fares in the 800’s, but was wondering whether or not they typically drop lower? Again, thanks for your help!!!

    1. Hi Lacy,

Thanks for providing us with all that information. Flights from Kansas City to Quito Ecuador in February are starting around $900 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. If you’re finding flights in the $800’s then that’s a good deal, but fares can fall lower into the $700’s. Typically for international destinations, purchasing flights about 3 months prior would be a good idea. As for flying, it appears Quito would be the cheaper option. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  157. Hi,

Thank you for responding, we are hoping to leave mid november and come back before January 6, 2014 but after Dec 31st .
    From Toronto to Manila
ive been looking but flight are very high the lowest I found is $1473
we are hoping to find cheaper than that, when would be the best time to purchase a ticket?

    Thank you kindly,
    Krisz

  158. Hi,

We are planning to go to Auckland,New Zealand from New Delhi, India on December 3rd. Also we need to book domestic flights within New Zealand, from Auckland to Queenstown. I was tracking the price for past one month and it has increased by 500rs.
I am confused that when should we get the tickets booked?I guess december is also a peak season in New Zealand.

    1. Hi Kavya,

For international travel, I’d suggest booking about 3 to 4 months in advance, but I’d also advise to continually check the fares. Once you find a flight at a price you like, buy it. Unfortunately we do not sell flights that do not depart or return from the U.S. or Canada, so we cannot assist you with domestic flights for New Zealand.

  159. Planning a trip to Hawaii over Thanksgiving. We are planning to leave on Nov. 19th and return on the red eye Thanksgiving night in order to get the cheaper fares. Any suggestion of when to start looking for tickets? Right now they are running over $3000 for a family of 4 from Denver. Is this what I can expect or will the go down if I wait until closer to the trip? Hoping to come in around $2500 or below.

    1. Hi Stacy,

You’re absolutely right by flying on Thanksgiving night. That will probably be your best bet for the cheapest option for the Thanksgiving holiday. Flights during the holidays are typically higher than any other time of the year. When it comes to book flights during the holidays, we always recommend purchasing sooner than later since the fares will probably not drop by much, if any, due to the high demand of holiday travel. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  160. Great article! We’re looking to fly from NYC to Paris and Mallorca the second week of April 2014. Should I wait until December to book even with multi-destination flights? Right now the best price for our dates is $1390 total for all three legs. Thanks!

    1. Hi Aild,

For international travel, its best to book further in advance. Since you’re looking for flights in April 2014, you still have plenty of time to keep monitoring the fares, but don’t wait till the last minute. Once you see a price you like, I’d suggest you buy it.

  161. Hi, I am planning to go to Cancun from Newark NJ on April 19, 2014. The fare being shown currently is $700 pp. Should I purchase the tickets now? Secondly, I may be using my United miles to upgrade to business class and have heard those seats are limited. Any advise you can provide is greatly appreciated.

    1. Hi Frank,

For travel in April 2014, you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the fares. Typically, international flights should be booked about 3 to 4 months in advance, but if you see a price you like for the flights you want, I’d buy it. As far as upgrades go, you’re exactly right. Those business class seats are limited, so the sooner you’re able to apply for the upgrade the better, but overall its up to the airline to confirm your upgrade. Usually what happens is upon requesting the upgrade, you’ll be put on a wait list and at some point the airline will authorize the upgrade. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights. We’re here to assist you if you need it.

  162. My family of 4 is traveling with another family of 3 to Oahu in April 2014 – we have our place already booked so we know the exact dates. When would you recommend purchasing tickets? I’ve been looking at prices since the dates came available – and have seem them go from $491 to now $567 – has me worried that I missed the ‘cheap’ window! Any help would be appreciated!

    1. Hi Denise,

For flights to Oahu in April 2014, you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the fares. I suspect they’ll drop back down over the next 10 months. I recommend that you sign up for our FareTracker e-mail alerts for your route. When the fares change, we’ll automatically e-mail you so you’ll know when to check prices. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help!

  163. This site is wonderful! I’m taking my two granddaughters and another young friend to Orlando during the week of 3/27/14-4/2/2014. I’m a senior and they are three 12 year olds. According to this info, purchasing our airfare between 7 to 10 weeks or when the flight sales are opened is the best time. I would like to sign up for e-alerts to be sure.

    1. Hi Pat,

For travel in March and April of next year, you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the fares. You can sign up for FareTracker to track your routes and we will automatically e-mail you when the fares change. Please let us know if you need any help searching for flights.

  164. Learned a few could pointers. Thank you. Could use some advise on a trip coming in April of 2014. Flying out of Detroit April 4th and returning on the 12th from San Jaun pr. Need to book 15 seats. When would be the best time to book this many seats with an early morning departure and a mid afternoon return flight.

    1. Hi Ray,

For a large group of 15, its best to book sooner than later. In order to book a group, you’ll need to contact the airlines directly to request a group rate, that way you can get the same rate for all passengers in your group. Airlines I would recommend contacting are: American Airlines, US Airways, and United Airlines.

  165. I have contacted two of the ones you have mentioned and the rates they quoted me was more the $100 each person more expensive than just booking five or six at a time. We are not worried about waiting to list all the passengers and paying in full now. That is what it appeared to us the advantage of booking as a group. Not opposed to waiting to get a better price. Thank you.

    1. Hi Ray,

For groups, airlines will offer that same rate to all passengers in your group. The problem you can encounter when booking your group into smaller groups is as flights get more full they get more expensive and you need a pretty large block of seats. Sometimes, there may be only a couple seats left at the lowest fare and you can get that fare if you book 2 at a time. But with 8 you can only get a fare that would be available for all 8 passengers.

      1. I think we will average the higher fares with the lower fares and all pay the same. It might be cheaper that way. When do you think would be the best rates?

        1. Hi Ray,

The cheapest flights from Detroit to San Juan for your dates starts at around $490.35 per person, not including any baggage fees. You’re welcome to purchase the flights however you feel is best for you, but you do run the risk of the tickets being vastly different in price for the same flights. Please let us know if you need any assistance.

  166. Thanks for responding to my earliest post! I forgot to mention that we are flying the week of Easter, flying out the Friday before Easter and flying home April 20, Easter Sunday. Does Easter affect prices at all? Should I book earlier than usual for that week? Thanks!

    1. Hi Aild,

Thanks for providing us with that information. Yes, holidays tend to book up faster, so I’d suggest booking about a month earlier than advised. Overall, I’d continue to monitor the fares and buy once you see a price you like.

  167. Hi, I need to book a flight to New Orleans for July 28. I wanted to purchase this week, but I didn’t know if it would be best to wait until after July 4 or go ahead? Thank you in advance!

    1. Hi Amanda,

Typically for domestic flights, we’re finding 7 weeks to be the optimum time to buy… and we’re only 4 weeks out now. Being that we’re 4 weeks away from July 28, I’d advise to purchase sooner than later. Fares will rise the closer it gets to your date of travel, so don’t put it off any longer.

  168. How about a trip from AVL to FCO. Would booking a Tuesday to Tuesday trip (Nov 5 – Nov 12, 2013) vs. a Saturday to Saturday (Nov 2 – Nov 9, 2013) be much of a savings? I know day of travel can lead to saving but if it’s only $100 or less, then not an issue for me. Also, when would be a good time to really consider purchasing? Early September?

    Cheers,
    James

    1. Hi James,

The cheapest flights for Nov 5 – 12, are starting at around $1233 per person and the cheapest flights for Nov 2 – 9 are starting at around $1293 per person, so there’s not much of a big difference there. As for when to purchase your flights, for international destinations I’d recommend purchasing flights about 11 weeks or more from your departure date. If possible, I’d continue to keep monitoring the flights each week (checking prices on Tuesday or Wednesday’s) to see if the fares drop any from now till then. If you need any assistance with finding flights, please let us know. We’re happy to help.

  169. Wow, a lot of great info here! We’ve got our wedding coming up on January 4, ’14 in Kauai and are trying to provide some good advice to people purchasing tickets. Almost everybody will be flying from Los Angeles. Hard to predict when people will want to arrive but it’s almost certain that there will be high demand on the return of January 5. For a high-traffic date on a high-popularity destination is it still worth waiting a little longer? (Or, depending on how accessible last year’s data-set is to you, what was the historical behavior for flights returning from Kauai to LAX on Jan 6, 2013 :-))

    1. Hi Ron,

First, let me congratulate you on your upcoming wedding. For flights to Kauai from LAX in January, you’ll probably want to purchase flights sooner than normal. The reason being that its close to the New Year holiday and fares are high. Flight prices also fluctuate based on the number of days, so if your wedding party can be flexible by staying another day, that can help with the price sometimes. Since we’re still about 6 months out from then, you definitely have some time to continue to monitor the flights, but don’t wait too long. I’d advise to make sure flights are purchased prior to November, so anytime from now till then would be a wise time to buy. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights, we’d be happy to help you.

  170. Hi, I’m planning flights out of New York to San Francisco for Thanksgiving 2013 (flying out on a Tuesday and back on a Monday). The lowest fare I’m getting right now is around $400 rt. Are fares likely to dip in the coming weeks or is this the lowest it’s going to get?
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Sally,

For flights around the Thanksgiving holidays, I’d suggest to buy now. The airlines know this is a very popular time to travel, so its not likely the fares will drop from now till then. While you don’t have to purchase right this minute, you can still continue to monitor the flights… but once you see a flight you like at a price you like, then I’d buy it quickly. Please let us know if you need any help.

  171. We are looking to purchase a trip from Pittsburgh to Orlando in the beginning of February… by what I am reading you are suggesting to wait to purchase flights the week of Deb 16th? Right?

    1. Hi Sara,

That would be the average best time to book, but I’d suggest to check and monitor the flights around November and December. A good option would be to sign up for our FareTracker e-mails. You can sign up for FareTracker to track your routes and we will automatically e-mail you when the fares change. Please let us know if you need any help searching for flights.

  172. I’m planning a trip from Atlanta, GA to New Delhi, India in October for about 3 week. when is the best time to book tickets?

    1. Hi Anant,

For international travel, its a good idea to book well in advance. I’d suggest checking flights regularly each week and when you see a fare you like, buy it. Since we’re about 3 months away from October, I’d suggest buying sooner than later to avoid the prices increasing. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  173. I have reservations in Maui, HI from 4-2-14 thru 4-12-14; when would you suggest I purchase the round trip flight?

    1. Hi Mike,

You still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the flights. I’d probably wait till the beginning of next year to purchase, but a good option would be to sign up for our FareTracker e-mails. You can sign up for FareTracker to track your routes and we will automatically e-mail you when the fares change. Please let us know if you need any help searching for flights.

  174. Hi there Anant,

My husband and I would like to travel to Paris, France from Denver on October 25th – November 5th. We found great tickets on Icelandair for $886.00 roundtrip per person, including taxes and fees. Should we buy this now, or should we wait for it to be 11-12 weeks prior to departure as recommended above?

    Thank you!
    Tara A.

    1. Hi Tara,

I would suggest to buy now if you’re finding flights you like at a price you like. There’s no guarantee that the prices will drop any more, so I wouldn’t chance it if you’ve found something you like.

  175. planning on travelling june july next year with family of 4 – is there better saving buying tickets from overseas than in australia

example buy ticket in usa or canada web site or airline rather than purchasing here from OZ

    cheers

    1. Hi David,

Where you purchase your flights can depend on where you’re traveling from and to. I’d suggest trying our website since we offer Price Drop Payback, where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! Since you’re traveling next year, you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the flights and fares. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  176. My girlfriend and I are going to fly from Charlotte to New Orleans for a marathon in February. We want to fly out on Jan 31st and return on Feb 4th. Right now the cheapest tickets are $237. Does this seem like a reasonable price or should we wait to book?

    1. Hi Jordan,

That’s definitely a reasonable price. Since there’s still 6 months till you’re departure, you have plenty of time to buy and I don’t foresee the price jumping much from now till December, so anytime you’re ready to buy would be good. Just let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  177. Hi there!

I have to travel to Vietnam (IAH to SGN) on exactly Dec 18th, and return on Jan 11th (+-1day). I really need advices since I have never traveled in December, and on non-flexible terms.

Do you know the lowest price for Christmas season last year? When should I buy ticket for this trip this year? What is a good price you might predict this year? I found a 1stop round trip for 1600$, is it a good price to jump on right now?

Thanks so much and best regards!

    1. Hi Tien,

For flights from Houston to Ho Chi Minh City for your dates, I would suggest to purchase your flights sooner than later to avoid the fares increasing as travel during the holiday time tends to be more expensive. In general, a good price would be around $1250, but for your exact dates you’re looking at fares starting at $1550 per person. I would suggest to jump on the flights you like at the price you like since flights for the holiday season will fill up, especially when you’re not able to be flexible with your travel dates. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights, we’d be happy to assist you if you need it.

  178. We are traveling to Jamaica (Montego Bay) from Buffalo mid-July, 2014. When should we begin shopping around for airfare and what are the best airlines to look at for that route?

    1. Hi Kelly,

For travel in July 2014, you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the flights. I’d suggest to book about 3 to 4 months prior to your departure in July… but as you are monitoring the flights, if you see a flight at a price you like, I’d suggest to buy it. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  179. We’re looking to go home for Christmas which is on Wednesday this year. Taking off the whole week so can go Friday – Sunday of the next week (20th – 29th) or around there, such as Saturday to Saturday. We fly from Raegan in DC to either New Orleans (MSY) or Baton Rouge (BTR). Any advice? Not sure how long out to book. Right now, everything is super expensive. Thanks!

    1. Hi Tarin,

For flights around the holidays, its best to purchase your flights sooner than later. The holidays are always the busiest time of year to travel and the airlines will start fares higher than usual. Since there are only a limited number of available flights, it is recommended to secure your flights as soon as possible since its highly unlikely those flights will decrease due to lack of demand. With all that said, if you can get a flight for under $400, that wouldn’t be bad for a week or more. With that said, if you can cut your trip to 9 days or less the prices are cheaper than going for the full 10 days (20th – 29th). Please let us know if you need assistance with finding flights. We’d be happy to help you if you need it.

      1. Cheap,

Yes, please help me find something. It’d have to be Friday night, the 20th, through Sunday the 29th.

Reagan National to New Orleans or Baton Rouge

If it’d be cheaper, we could do Saturday to Sunday, or Friday to Saturday. Even Saturday to Saturday if needed. Please let me know what is best.

        1. Hi Tarin,

After researching your dates, we’re finding Dec 20 – 28 to be your best option for flights from Reagan (DCA) to New Orleans (MSY) with flights starting at around $378 per person, not including any baggage fees. I would recommend purchasing sooner than later since flights for the holidays will only continue to increase in cost. To book, you can follow this link: http://bit.ly/189l8uG

  180. Hello! My husband and I are planning to go to Maui in May of 2014 – from either Buffalo or Rochester, NY. When should I book the fare in your opinion? Thanks!

    1. Hi Linda,

For flights to Maui in May of 2014, you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the fares. A good time to buy would be early 2014, but I’d recommend signing up for our FareTracker to track your routes and we will automatically e-mail you when the fares change. Please let us know if you need any help searching for flights.

  181. I am planning my honeymoon for early June 2014. I know flights are not out for that date yet, but…would it be better to book once they are (the earliest possible), or wait till a few months out.

    1. Hi Jennifer,

Congratulations! For flights in June 2014, you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the fares. Depending on where your traveling from and to, I’d suggest holding off booking till about 4 months out. Ultimately, if you see flights that you like at a price you like, then buy it. If you need any assistance with finding flights, please let us know and we’d be happy to assist you.

  182. First, great article. Second, this is the first company I have ever seen that really responded to all of it’s customers. That is truly impressive, and I would like to take advantage of that level of customer service.

My family (4 Adults and 3 kids) is planning a spring break trip for April 12-19, 2014. Departing any airport in NC (RDU, FAY, GSO, CLT) to PHX. Initially, I wanted to fly into PHX and out of LAS, but that is proving difficult for both cost and rental car. I saw tickets 2 weeks ago from CLT to PHX for $256 (a steal I think!) but the next day I went back to buy and they were $456! Right now, I’m seeing some good flights for $378-$415.

What are your thoughts? That is easter week, so it is a holiday. Is ~$400 a good price, and book it now since I need so many seats? Or, is there any chance that they creep back down to that $256 point (I’m still kicking myself).

Thanks, and again, truly appreciate your professionalism and help.

    1. Hi Mike,

Charlotte to Phoenix looks to be your best route for the cheapest fares. The $256 price is definitely on the lower end of pricing for that route. Since you’re looking for flights for Easter of next year, you still do have some time to continue to monitor the fares. I suspect that the prices will continue to fluctuate being that we’re still about 9 months away. You’re certainly right with purchasing sooner than later when it comes to travel during the holidays, but rest assure you still have plenty of time to wait it out more. I think a good idea would be to sign up for our FareTracker e-mails, which will allow you to track your routes and we’ll automatically e-mail you when the fares change. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

      Always happy to help!

      -The CheapAir Team

  183. Hi there,

We are looking to travel from Chicago to Montego Bay from Dec 30-Jan 4. I am looking at an AirTran direct flight that they offer and from watching, there has been no fluctuation at all in the pricing. It is a bit pricier than some other options, but for the direct flight option, definitely worth that. Not sure if we should book now or wait and see what happens with pricing closer to the 11 week mark you recommend. I know we are traveling over the holidays so not sure how that will impact. Thanks for your help!

    1. Hi Meg,

For travel during the holidays its always better to book further in advance since its always the most popular times to travel and the airlines know that. Due to this, I would highly recommend purchasing your flights sooner than later to avoid the prices from increasing more. Your best bet on saving money for this trip would be to choose flights with connections/stops, but its up to you if you want those flights. Definitely let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help you if you need it.

  184. Looking to fly from San Antonio, TX to Hiroshima, Japan from Nov 24 to Dec 27 2013. When is the best time to buy the plane ticket? When I checked earlier in the year, it was close to $2000. Now it’s at $1350. But I still feel that if I wait longer, I can get it for cheaper. What do you think?

    1. Hi Kim,

I would recommend to buy now since $1350 is a good price for flights from San Antonio, TX to Hiroshima, Japan. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights. We’re here to help you if you need it.

  185. Hi there, we’re looking to travel to California in October. We need to book separate one-way flights as we’ll be flying back from a different location. 4 of us will be flying out of Detroit or Flint going to San Francisco on Oct 3. Then on Oct 12, 2 of us will be flying from San Diego back into Detroit or Flint and the other 2 flying from San Diego into Toronto. The prices have been fluctuating from about $140 – $250 for the domestic flights and $250-$400 for the Toronto flight over the past week. Not sure if we’re still a little early and should wait, or if we should book now. Thanks for your help!

    1. Hi Jamie,

For your flights, you still have a little time to continue to monitor the flights. I wouldn’t hold off too much longer though. We’re about 2 1/2 months out from your departure so I’d advise to keep monitoring your flights and once you see the flights you like at a price you like, buy them. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. Our travel advisors are available to assist you if you need it.

  186. Hi Jeff,

We are looking to travel to Malaysia Kuala Lumpur from Ottawa Canada to visit a freind from Oct09 -Oct27, when is the best time to buy the plane ticket? Two years ago when we attended his wedding it was only $1050 approx with Cathy Pacific.

Thanks four help! It is greatly appreciated.

    1. Hi Chris,

You still have some time to continue to monitor the flights, but you’re not going to find fares as low as you did 2 years ago. If you can be flexible with your dates you can find the cheapest flights which are starting around $1350 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help you if you need it.

  187. Hi,
We’re planning to go to Barcelona from Miami on 3/6/2014 and I would like to pay the cheapest price possible, how early in advance should i book to get a good deal?

    1. Hi Ivon,

For flights from Miami to Barcelona in March, I would advise to monitor the fares first to get a sense of pricing. Currently, I’m finding one-way flights for your dates starting at around $800 per person, not including any baggage fees. That’s a good price for one-way. Depending on if you are traveling one-way or round-trip, I would suggest to purchase your flights no later than 3 months out from your departure in March. You can certainly purchase now if you find a flight you like at a price you like, but overall about 3 months out from your departure would be around the right time to buy.

  188. Hi there,
My parents live overseas, and I was hoping to make a surprise visit sometime in the beginning of next year. However, If I had the money to book this flight, say in February– what month would be best to select departure date? After reading this article- I’m guessing 81 days in advance? So around May-ish to set departure date on a Tuesday or Wednesday?
Thanks so much in advance for all your help!

    1. Hi Hanta,

In order for me to assist you, I’ll need to know where you’re departing from and arriving? Typically for international travel, we’re finding the optimum time to buy to be around 81 days, but that really depends on when you’re looking to go and where you’re traveling from and to. In any event, being flexible with your travel dates is the best way to save money on your flights.

  189. My husband and I are looking to book flights to Roatan, Honduras for February 9-15, 2014. When would you recommend booking these flights? Right now the fares are about $700/person. We are traveling from Nebraska. We have already reserved out rooms.

    1. Hi Lindsey,

For flights from Omaha to Roatan, Honduras for your dates, fares look to be starting around $650 per person, so $700 isn’t a bad price. Since we’re still about 6 months our from your departure you have plenty of time to continue to monitor the fares, but if you’re finding flights you like at a price you like, then I would buy it once you’re ready. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  190. Hi, I’m wondering when is the best time to buy airfare to Hawaii in mid October. Also could you recommend a site where I can buy tickets at the best deal?

    1. Hi Brittany,

Depending on where you’re departing from, I’d advise to purchase your flights sooner than later. Airlines increase the airfares the closer it gets to your departure date, so its wise to buy at least a minimum of 7 weeks in advance. As for where to purchase your flights, our website: CheapAir.com would be the best place to check airfares. If you need any assistance with finding flights, just let us know. We’d be happy to help you.

  191. Hi, we are looking to book a trip to Maui Jan 24-31, 2014 leaving from Fargo, ND. You can only imagine the connecting flights we have to deal with. Should I wait until Oct./Nov. to really consider purchasing, prices today are between $925-$1200 per ticket.

    1. Hi A.J.

The lowest fares for your dates start around $925 per person (not including any baggage fees that may apply), so if you’re finding flights that you like around this price I would suggest purchasing them once you’re ready. Otherwise, I would advise to continue to monitor the fares. There’s a possibility that fares may drop since January in Hawaii is considered low season, but I wouldn’t wait till the last minute to book either. Please let us know if you need any assistance with searching for flights. We’re here to help you if you need it.

  192. Hi, I’m planning a trip from Orlando, Fl to Chicago. Back in May the flights were really cheap $160 round-trip. However, I couldn’t book a flight then so now I’m aiming for September or October. But so far the flights are around $300 round-trip. Will the prices go down or continue to rise? I’m not sure when would be good to buy my tickets. I just want a good deal. I would hate to buy tickets and then I turn around and they dropped the price.
What price range should I expect to spend on the tickets?? And, when would be god time to buy, 8 weeks out??

    1. Hi Joey,

For flights in September and October, you’re doing the right thing by checking airfares now. Since I’m not sure how many days you’re looking for or the dates, its sounds like you’re flexible with your trip. If that’s the case, then I invite you to try our Map Search which will allow you to enter your home airport and see where you can fly and for how much. When looking at Chicago, I’m finding the lowest fares starting around $236 per person, not including any baggage fees. In any event, you don’t want to wait till the last minute to purchase your flights. In general, we’re finding 7 weeks to be the optimum time to buy. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights, we’re here to help you if you need it.

  193. I am travling form cedar rapids iowa to fort myers florida feb22 to mar 22. when should i buy my tickets

    1. Hi Rick,

For flights in February, you still have some time to continue to monitor the fares. I would suggest purchasing your flights in December, possibly even into January… but I’d caution not to wait too much later after that, since airfares will increase the closer it gets to your date of travel. Please let us know if you need any help with booking your flights. We’re here to help you if you need it.

  194. My husband and I are planning to travel to Europe this September 20-29. We have been looking at flights for some time now, watching. However, we may be moving, and have been waiting to purchase our tickets until it gets closer to the departure date. About how long should we wait to purchase our tickets? I would like to get them now/ASAP; my husband wants to wait in case we do end up moving for his job here shortly. How far in advance prior to the departure date do the international ticket prices tend to greatly increase?

    Thank you for any suggestions.

    1. Hi Catherine,

If you’re planning to travel to Europe in September, I would advise to buy your flights now. We’re about 2 months away from your departure, so fares will start to climb the closer it gets to your date of travel. Since you’re also mentioning possibly moving, that definitely throws a wrench into the whole plan. Airline tickets are typically sold as non-refundable and international fares have penalties the airlines charge to make any changes. With all that in mind, it is your decision whether you feel you can go to Europe or not. We’re here to help you if you need any assistance with finding or booking your flights. Please let us know if you need any help.

  195. Hi. Looking to book flights from CMH to RSW Arrive March 23 2014 – Depart March 28. Is it too early to purchase now? Will rates most likely drop? It’s Spring Break time so don’t want to run risk of decreased supply. Thanks!

    1. Hi TD,

Fares for those dates are currently starting at $462 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. Since that is Spring Break and a busier time for travel, I would suggest purchasing your flights sooner than normal, however I would also wait and monitor the flight a little longer since we’re still 8 months away, you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the flights and find a lower fare. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights, we’re here to help you if you need it.

  196. Hi. We are looking to fly from JFK new york to PVR Puerto Vallarta Mexico February 16 – 22 2014. This is school vacation for us so a busy and popular time. It is running $635 with 1 stop currently. Should I book or wait? Thanks!

    1. Hi Marc,

For flights in February, you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the fares. I would suggest signing up for our FareTracker where you can enter the routes you want to keep track of and we’ll automatically e-mail you an alert when the fares change. Please let us know if you need any assistance with booking flights. We’re here to help you if you need it.

    1. Hi Jan,

For travel for the holidays, its always a good idea to buy earlier than usual. The airlines know that the holidays are the busiest time of year for traveling, so they increase the airfares knowing this. I would advise to buy now. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  197. Hi,
We are going to Cancun during spring break, April 12-19, travelling from the DC area, preferably not from Baltimore. I have looked at airfare from the DC airports area and best flight price is around $452 with 1 stop (this is with the taxes and fees), however the times of that flight are no good, so a flight with good times is around $550 (with the taxes and fees) and non-stop is only being offered by United currently at $677 a ticket. We are a family of 6 and would love to save as much as possible on the flights obviously. Am I looking to early, I am afraid the prices will only go up? We are already booked in a resort in Cancun, please help?????

    1. Hi Ellen,

You’re absolutely doing the right thing by checking the fares and your options. That really helps to put the costs into perspective. Since you’re looking to travel in April 2014, you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the fares. Ultimately, I would buy when you find the flights you like at the price you like. I would advise not to wait past February though, as fares will begin to increase the closer it gets to your date of travel. I would recommend signing up for our FareTracker alerts, where you can enter the routes you want to keep track of and we’ll automatically e-mail you an alert when the fares change. Please let us know if you need any assistance with booking flights. We’re here to help you if you need it.

  198. Okay, but I have also read to do it before the new year, since once January rolls around most people start to think about vacation during spring break and fare will tend to go up then too??? Can you give me a high and low for these flights so I know where I should be when I book the flights?

    1. Hi Ellen,

Currently the high for your dates is at $1299 per person and the low is starting at $440 per person. Keep in mind, the more flexible with your flight times, days, connections, etc… the better your odds are at getting the cheapest fares. With that said, you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the flights to find the flights you like at a price you like. It is true that with peak travel times (like Spring Break) you should book further in advance than normal.

  199. Also, I tried to sign up for FareTracker and this is what it told me:

We’re sorry, but FareTracker doesn’t work with this market. Right now, we support only the most popular routes for travel within the United States.

    1. Hi Ellen,

Sorry about that. We are currently working on improving our FareTracker and not every market is able to be tracked yet. Definitely let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights, our travel advisors are here to assist you if you need it.

  200. We are looking to fly from Atlanta to Orlando (Feb 21 departure, Mar 1return). I know that Southwest just opened their fares through Mar 7. It looks like many of the WGA fares are showing as sold out already or Unavailable for your return trip… What is so big about this first weekend in March that would cause it to be this way? I’m thinking now I should have booked fares the day they were published – even though we are 7 months out!!!

    1. Hi Michelle,

The cheapest fares for your dates are starting around $272 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. Southwest is starting at around $436 per person. If the cheapest flights have sold up for your return already, there may be a chance that Southwest Airlines will add more flights to that route for that day. However, there is also the chance that they will not. So if you’re adamant about flying Southwest, you may want to book now. Otherwise, to get the cheapest fares, you can call us at 1-800-243-2724 and one of our travel advisors would be happy to assist you.

  201. Hi again,

I know what the high and low prices are today for the fligts from DC to Cancun what I want to know is if the $500 pp, rt is a good price, mid of road etc…. Is it likely to go cheaper since its early or no???

    Thanks,
    Ellen

    1. Hi Ellen,

The price at $500 per person is a good price. Of course this all depends on whether you like the flight times and number of connections (if any), but overall $500 is close the lowest fares for that route, so if you’re finding flights you like at this price then you can certainly purchase now. Travelers who purchase on CheapAir.com are also automatically enrolled in our Price Drop Payback program, where if the price for the same itinerary goes down any time before your trip, we’ll pay you the difference in the form of a travel credit, up to $100 per ticket! As I mentioned before, since we’re in July and you’re looking to travel April, we’re still 9 months away. You definitely have plenty of time to continue to monitor the fares and see if prices drop. In any case, please let us know if you need any help with finding flights. We’re here to help you if you need it.

  202. Do you think prices will drop a bit in September due to fuel surcharges? Also, that is great to know, so if I buy 6 tickets and the price drops for whatever reason, taxes, fee, fuel, ticket price itself you will credit up to $100 per ticket for future travel? Do that expire ever? Does it have to be for the same flights /times that I booked?

Thanks for all your help, you’re helping to make a bit less crazy about this 😉

    1. Hi Ellen,

It’s hard to predict when the airfares will change, but it is possible. Since you’re not traveling till April, you definitely have time to wait and see. As for our Price Drop Payback program, you can read all the terms and conditions here: http://bit.ly/18Na72v (Credits expire 1 year from their date of issue.) If you need any assistance, feel free to contact one of our travel advisors at 1-800-243-2724 and we’d be happy to help you.

  203. We are looking to go to Big Island Hawaii the 3rd week of October. When is best time to buy the lowest ticket?

    1. Hi Annette,

You’ll want to start looking for flights now. We’re about 10-11 weeks out from mid October so checking fares now would be smart. That will help you get an idea of pricing and whether to wait it out a little longer or to buy now. In any event, feel free to let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help you if you need it.

  204. We are going to Jamicia in June 20, 2014 should I buy our tickets before Christmas or after? Or when will be a good time?

    1. Hi Misty,

Summer time in Jamaica is a popular time to travel to the island. I would definitely recommend buying your flights earlier than usual, however I would caution not to book too early as that can also be a bad strategy for getting a low airfare. If you can provide me your departure city, we can look at the pricing more in depth to give you a more accurate answer.

    1. Hi Misty,

Thank you for providing me with the dates. From where are you departing? That will really help me to research your route.

        1. Hi Misty,

Thanks for that information. Currently the cheapest flights for that route are starting at around $582.95 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. This isn’t a bad price for that route, but you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the flights to see if the price drops. Since Jamaica is a popular destination during the summer months, it is recommended to purchase sooner than normal, but I would advise to keep checking the prices till you find the flights you like at a price you like. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  205. Do you guys have data on Canadian departures as well? I’m planning a trip to DEL from YYZ, leaving November 8th and coming back on the 24th. I wasn’t sure about if I should book my tickets now or wait until mid/late-august as the 81-day rule suggests.

    1. Hi Gundeep,

Our data mostly includes U.S. markets, but we’re always happy to help a fellow traveler in need. For flights from Toronto to Delhi, India for those dates booking now wouldn’t be a bad idea. You do have some time to continue to monitor the fares, but don’t wait too much longer because we’re about 10 weeks out from your departure so fares will start to increase once it gets within about 6 weeks of your departure. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  206. Hi, My Hubby and I are planning a trip to Cabo San Lucas around the 3rd week of Jan. We will be flying out of San Diego, Ca. Should I book a certain day in order to get a better price. Also, from what i read, I should purchase my tickets late October, early November, is that correct?

    1. Hi Vicci,

Yes, certain days can be better when searching for flights. Typically searching for flights earlier in the week tends to be better since airlines will often release their sales earlier in the week, like on a Tuesday for example. As for when you should buy, booking in late October, early November would be recommended, although its best to keep continually checking airfares since fares change constantly. This is the best practice to get familiar with the fares so you know when you see the flights you like at that price, you’ll know when to buy. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help you if you need it.

  207. Hello. I’m planning to fly from Little Rock, AR to Romania on May 15th 2014. How many months in advance do you think I should book my flight?

    1. Hi Daniel,

Sounds like an awesome trip. I would recommend to purchase your flight no later than 2 to 3 months out from your departure date. A good tip is to continue to check the fares each week (on Tuesday) and see what the prices are like. This will give you an idea of costs, so when you see a flight you like at the price you like, then I would buy it. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  208. When is best time to book a round trip flight to Fort Lauderdale from Spokane for beginning of February 2014? thanks

    1. Hi Eileen,

I would recommend searching for flights around the beginning of December. That will give you a little more than 2 months prior to your departure to find a good fare. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  209. I would like to book a flight from Philadelphia to Quito, Ecuador for a trip in either late December 2014 or early January 2015. When would be a good time for me to begin looking for lowest air fares?

    1. Hi Tabitha,

Airlines only release airfares 330 days out from the current date, so you still have a lot of time until the flights will even be released. Once the flights are released in early February 2014, then you will be able to check flights and fares for your trip. Since you’re interested in traveling in December 2014, I would suggest buying your flights in mid June/July if you plan on flying during the holidays since those days are always the most expensive and its recommended to buy flights for the holidays earlier than normal. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  210. My niece is getting married June 2014, flights just started being available for that far in advance. We need to fly from Newark to Cancun, wedding is on the island of Isle Mujeres – what do you think is a good price for end of June and when should we start seriously book. I have the trip alerts set up, but still seem high. But as soon as it gets to a good price want to book…

    thanks for your help

    1. Hi Janie,

The cheapest fares for flights from Newark to Cancun are starting at around $450 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. Depending on the length of stay and your travel dates, fares can be higher. Its great that you signed for for the trip alerts as that will help assist you. I would recommend searching for flights earlier than usual, like 4 to 5 months or more out to see where the flights are pricing out. Definitely let us know if you need any help with finding flights. We’re here to assist you if you need it.

  211. Hi. I am going on an Alaska cruise in May of 2014 and it will involve multiple destination travel, flying from Sacramento to Anchorage, then after a week’s cruise, a flight from Vancouver to Sacramento. I looked at the prices today and they are pretty high! I want to wait to book my airfare until 2014. What do you think? Thanks for your thoughts.

    1. Hi Jim,

Waiting to book your flights till 2014 is certainly fine. Since you’re looking to fly in May, I would suggest searching for flights early in 2014 to check where the fares are at. If you’re noticing that the prices are only increasing, then I would suggest to buy. But, if you’re seeing that fares have dropped since last checking, then that may be a good sign that the fares may drop even more. In any event, definitely let us know if you need any help with booking your flights. Our travel advisors are available to assist you if you need it.

  212. Hey there! I am planning a trip to Baltimore, MD (BWI) the second week of November, leaving out of Charlotte, NC (CLT). The fare appears to be a decent price right now, but according to your recommended buy times@ 7 weeks out, will be mid September. Should wait until then or go ahead and book? Thank you for all the information you’ve provided to assist with these decisions. 🙂

    1. Hi Heather,

If you’re finding flights you like a good price, then you may want to buy since those flights may not be the same price tomorrow. Airfare fluctuate daily depending on the route and dates, but we’re still about 14 weeks out from early November so you still have time to continue to monitor the fares. Just be cautious not to wait too long though since airfares do increase the closer it gets to your departure date. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  213. I’m looking to fly to New York on December 20th/21st from Manchester, I understand this probably one of the busiest weeks to travel, but I was just wondering when the best time to book would be?! I was considering waiting until September when the peak summer season finishes. Would this be wise?!

    1. Hi Ian,

Traveling around the holidays is always costly. It’s best to book now, since airfares during the holiday season are much higher than normal due to the peak travel time. I wouldn’t wait or put it off much longer since prices for those dates will probably only increase the closer it gets to your date of travel. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help you if you need it.

  214. I love this site! I’ve been reading the articles you wrote and I had a question about a trip I’m planning on taking to Ireland to celebrate St. Patty’s Day with my hubby for our 1 year wedding anniversary. I’ve been looking at Kayak’s Vacation Deal where they have flight and hotel combined and the prices look really reasonable. The cheapest I’ve seen was $1702 using Priceline. I’m a little limited in my travel because my spring break is that week of the festival so I was thinking of traveling from 3/10-3/16. I know Monday’s are bad days but I switched the days around on days you recommended and saw no difference. I guess my question is, with it kind of being a well known holiday there, what are my chances of finding a better price for the combo and when should I make sure to book it by to avoid overselling at the cheap hotels

    1. Hi Amy,

We’d love to help you, but we’ll need to know where you’re flying from in order to check fares. In general, since St. Patty’s Day is a very popular holiday for Ireland, I would definitely recommend to purchase your trip sooner than later since holiday times are always more expensive. If you’re finding flights and hotels at prices you like then I would buy since they may not be there tomorrow. Airfares fluctuate daily, so its always a good idea to purchase if you find flights you like at a price you like.

  215. Hello,

My girlfriend and I are traveling to San Francisco from London next July, more specifically, around July 12th (due to commitments). Having read numerous articles, advice and your very helpful article it seems like the best time to book the flights is when they come out. Is this correct? What would be your advice? We are looking to come back about 4 weeks later in August. Many thanks.

    1. Hi Dan,

For travel next July, you still have plenty of time to monitor the fares. Flight schedules are made available 330 days out from the current date, so in about a week or two the outbound flights will become available, but even then the return won’t be available till about October. That doesn’t mean you need to buy right away in October, but I would suggest that you continue to monitor the flights into the next year. I would avoid waiting till the last minute also. You’ll probably want to aim for about 3 to 5 months prior to your date of departure in July. Please let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  216. Hello. Thank you in advance for offering your expertise to all of us. I am trying to book a RT trip from MSP to MIA for MLK holiday (Thurs., 1/6/2014 – Tues., 1/13/2014). We would like to avoid using FLL. Thanks again!

    1. Hi Pete,

The cheapest flights for your dates into MIA would be starting at around $416 per person, not including any baggage fees that may apply. If you are willing to consider flying into FLL (Only about 30 minutes from MIA) the costs are starting at around $280 per person. In order to get these fares, you will need to call and book with one of our Travel Advisors at 1-800-243-2724. Please keep in mind that fares are subject to change until a reservation is made and payment is completed.

  217. I am flying from Manchester, UK to Orlando on the 31st May 2014, returning 2 weeks later. Will fares fall in price over the next several months or should I buy early?

    1. Hi Tommy,

For travel in May 2014, you still have plenty of time to continue to monitor the fares. I don’t recommend buying now since there is a possibility that fares will drop over the next several months. You’re best option would be to monitor the flights and check prices early in the week (like on a Tuesday or Wednesday) and see if the prices for your dates are increasing or dropping. If they are increasing then its possible the fares won’t drop in price. If you are noticing the prices are decreasing, then its possible they could drop even more. I would suggest buying once you find the flights you like at the price you like. Definitely let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help you if you need it.

  218. Hi,

I wan to book my honeymoon over the next month or so to go from london heathrow to Chicago in July 2014. I am finding it really difficult to see what a good price is for comparrison purposes however I am quite restricted on the dates. I thought that the quicker you get the flights the cheaper they were and only ever went up in price however reading this indicates they can start high and go down too? Also is it worth hanging on for the new year sales or is that just a marketing gimmick? I want to be organised but don’t want to rush into the first flights that are realeased?

    Thanks

    1. Hi Joanne,

Congratulations! For flights from London to Chicago in July 2014, you still have plenty of time to keep monitoring the fares. I’d suggest waiting till after November, since you’ll still have 8 months till your departure in July. Usually early in the beginning of the year is when everyone is thinking about their summer vacations and booking, so there can be some sales… but overall your best option is to keep checking the flights each week. This helps to get familiar with the costs. If you are noticing that the prices are staying the same, that can be an indication that the prices will drop. Ultimately, its best to purchase your flights no later than April/May. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights. We’re here to help you if you need it, so you don’t have to stress about your honeymoon. 🙂

  219. Hi we are attending a wedding in Asheville, NC July 4, 2014, when should we try to book our flight. We are flying out of LAX and prefer a 1 stop, it 4 adults, 1 senior and 1 child. We are trying to leave July 3, 2014 and return July 6, 2014.

    1. Hi Shannel,

For flights around the holidays, I would recommend booking earlier than normal. Airlines know that holidays are peak travel times so they will increase the costs for flights around and during the holidays. Flight schedules are made available 330 days out from the current date, so you still have to wait a little longer for the schedules to become available. Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  220. Hello there CheapAir expert, thank-you for your time and assistance. I understand from your previous posts that all the Hawaiian islands are very popular during the summer months. 😉 I would love to participate in the Faretracker, but the city I must depart from is not available. No problem. Would you suggest waiting 3-4 months before booking a flight from RNO to LIH for the month of June 2014? I had tracked rates over the last year and noticed they were much lower in the months of March and April. Thank-you for being a great customer service company!!

    1. Hi Jeni,

We appreciate your support! 🙂 Sorry that you’re unable to track your routes using our FareTracker. We’re working on adding more routes to it for the future. For flights from Reno to Lihue in June, I’d suggest booking earlier than normal due to the peak summer travel season for Hawaii. As you mentioned, fares are much lower earlier in the year so I’d aim for around then to buy your flights. Definitely let us know if you need any help with finding flights.

  221. Hi….we are going on a cruise Feb 8th to the 15th , 2014 . We are flying from Spokane to Fort Lauderdale on the 8th and need to return home on the 15th. We thought we were being on the ball by booking our tickets as soon as they opened up. We got a good flight on Southwest going to Fort Lauderdale 9,000 Wanna get away points but coming back the 1:10 flight from Fort Lauderdale to Spokane is already sold out! You can get Business select but no Wanna get away fare. How is that possible this early in advance? Will it become available again? We have about 25 people going on this Cruise. At least we can get there, we just can’t get back! Help!

    1. Hi Eileen,

Its hard to predict when and why a route would sell out, but it is possible that Southwest could schedule more flights if the demand warrants it. Unfortunately you have a couple things working against you. The first is that you have such a large group — and I assume you all want to be on the same flight. That makes it tough because as flights get more full they get more expensive and you need a pretty large block of seats. You can also try booking the seats in smaller groups. That can help, even if you all take the same flight. Sometimes, there may be only a couple seats left at the lowest fare and you can get that fare if you book 2 at a time. But with 8 you can only get a fare that would be available for all 8 passengers. Your best option would be to contact the airlines directly for a group rate for your return flight. They will be able to quote you a rate for all passengers in your group.

      1. Thanks so much….yes, we will try to book a couple at a time and hope the flight we need becomes available again. You are a great help to people!

  222. I’m planning to travel to NYC in late october or the first days of november, when shoul i buy mi tickets?
    thanks in advance!

    1. Hi Fernanda,

I’d suggest checking fares now since we’re about 3 months out from your departure. Find out how much flights are pricing out at and then check again on Tuesday to compare if the flights have dropped in price, stayed the same, or if they have increased. If the flights have increased, that can be a sign that you should buy before they increase any more. Otherwise, if you’re not seeing any change is price, then you can still continue to monitor the flights for a price drop. If the price drops, then you may want to buy it before it increases again. 223. We are considering going to France to honor the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Could you give some advice? Also, would it be less expensive to fly to somewhere other than Paris, and getting to Normandy by car, train, or, bus? Thank you.

  224. we are traveling oct 12 returning oct 19th 2013. From san diego to fort lauderdale fl. How low can I exspect the fare to get. Thankyou for your time and knowledge!

    1. Hi Andy,

Thank you for providing that information. For your dates, I would suggest purchasing sooner than later. Fares are currently starting around $365 per person and up. If you’re willing to fly into Miami (about 30 minutes from Ft. Lauderdale), you can save a little more. When checking flights on our website, we will include both Ft. Lauderdale and Miami airports. To book you can follow this link: http://bit.ly/122FC3k Please let us know if you need any assistance with finding flights.

  225. I’m planning to go to Boston next 4th of July week. I know this is very far out, but when would you suggest starting to look for deals for this week? I figured the earlier the better because it’s such a popular travel time.

    1. Hi Alison,

You’re absolutely doing the right thing by searching early. Travel during the holidays is always more expensive so its best to book further in advance than normal. I would recommend checking the fares for your dates and seeing where the prices are at. Then check back again in a week to see if they’ve increased, decreased, or stayed the same. I’d advise to continue to keep checking each week till December/January. Usually around that time is when people are starting to think about and plan their summer travels. Please keep in mind that if you see a flight at a price you like, be ready to buy it since that price may not last long. Definitely let us know if you need any help with searching for flights.
