We’ve got great news for international travelers in 2024. For the first time in 3+ years, passport processing times for U.S. citizens are back to pre-pandemic levels. After a few years of painful delays far beyond the usual red tape, the U.S. State Department has resumed regular processing times for new passports as well as passport renewals.

How long does it take to get a new or renewed passport in 2024?

According to the State Department, regular and expedited processing times are as follows:

Routine 6 to 8 weeks

Expedited 2 to 3 weeks

Urgent Must make an appointment and have international travel within 14 calendar days

What do I need to account for in “processing time”?

The State Department urges travelers to remember that they may not receive their passport the same time as other family members or friends.

In addition, mailing time is not included in the overall time frames for passport processing. Please allow for the mail when calculating what sort of service you will request. In our experience, it is a good idea to overestimate how much time will be required.

The State Department explains that it may take up to 2 weeks for the passport application to reach processing, and it can also take up to two weeks for it to be mailed back to you.

When can I check the processing status of my application?

You can sign up to receive email updates about your passport status. The State Department will send status updates beginning on the day your passport application is received.

Can I apply for my passport by mail?

Yes, but only if you are renewing or this isn’t your first time at the passport rodeo. People who need their first passport must apply in person at a passport acceptance facility. You can use this link to find an acceptance facility near you.

In conclusion, dear wanderers, the days of passport-related stress are behind us. The wait times are back to pre-pandemic levels, and the world is calling your name. So, go ahead, book that flight, plan that road trip, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime! Bon voyage!

  1. My husband and I are looking to book reasonable rates while staying in Oahu and Kaua’i in June 2024. I am looking at both Vrbo and Airb&b since everything I’ve heard about hotels pricing is very expensive. We will be renting cars. Maui/ Waimea is also a possibility. We are in our 80’s so not planning anything overly demanding physically.
I am just beginning to research this trip, so any help you can provide would be helpful.
    Thanks very much.

    • Hi Anne,

For travel to Hawaii during June 2024, we’d suggest checking our our Hawaii Summer Flights page where you can see the best (and worst) days to fly to Hawaii and how airfare costs are trending this summer. This is a helpful guide to direct you how to find cheaper flights to Hawaii during the peak summer travel season. Since you’re looking for flights in June, you’ll want to start searching for your dates and take a note how much the fares are. Keep in mind, when you are comparison shopping for flights you’ll also want to pay attention to the different ticket types each airline offers since depending on which class of service you choose (Economy, Premium, First, etc.) the costs could include extras like on-board amenities, baggage fees, and seat selection. You can practically customize your flight experience this way to ensure you get a more comfortable seat, or if you just want the cheapest flights and don’t plan to pack a lot of bags or care where you sit onboard. Depending on where you are departing from, you might want to book sooner than later. Reason is there could be only a few flight options available from where you live. It’s a good idea to ensure you book your flights at least 50 days prior to your departure date, but strongly recommend booking about 2-3 months prior to your departure to ensure a good price. Also, when you book your flights on CheapAir.com in the scenario that a fare does go down after you buy. We offer a free feature called “Price Drop Payback” and it protects your ticket for changes up to $100. So if a fare goes down after you buy, you can get up to $100 towards your next ticket. If you need any help with finding flights or booking, you can also email us at [email protected]. We hope you have a great trip.
